The Midlands Graduate School is an accredited Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP), with the first intake of students to begin in October 2017. One of 14 such partnerships in the UK, the Midlands Graduate School is a collaboration between the University of Warwick, Aston University, University of Birmingham, University of Leicester, Loughborough University and the University of Nottingham. The Midlands Graduate School is now inviting applications for an ESRC Doctoral Joint Studentship between Loughborough University (where the student will be registered) and the University of Nottingham to commence in October 2017.

The project will investigate how receptionist-led triage happens in patients’ telephone calls to GP practices. The study will investigate a corpus of real-time recorded interaction between receptionists and analyse the data using conversation analysis. Analysis might focus on, for instance, what happens when receptionists ask patients to ‘give some idea of what the problem is’, in order to ‘triage’ their needs. Overall, the project will identify troubles that can emerge, as well as practices that work, in enabling patient access to GP services.

We are seeking to appoint a Research Fellow in Linguistics and Professional Communication. This is a 2.5 year fixed-term post (1 October 2016 – 31 March 2019) funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), with funding fully guaranteed for the full 2.5 year term. This is an excellent opportunity to join an established research cluster and business unit, Linguistic Profiling for Professionals (LiPP), in the Centre for Research in Applied Linguistics (CRAL), School of English at the University of Nottingham’s UK Campus.

The successful candidate will play a key role in research and business engagement as part of a 10.1 million ERDF grant, Enabling Innovation. This project involves a series of innovative business engagement initiatives with local businesses based in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Candidates must have a PhD in a relevant area prior to taking up the post. Expertise in one or more of the following areas would be a distinct advantage: The sociolinguistics of the workplace, business communication, organisational communication, linguistic pragmatics. The ability to analyse data using corpus linguistics software and/or eye-tracking technology is desirable, though not essential. Previous experience of working in industry or with different stakeholders outside of academia would be an advantage.

The School of English was founded in 2007, developing a range of Masters and BA programmes in the areas of Applied Linguistics, English language, World Englishes and Professional Communication, with PhDs offered from 2009. Additionally, the Centre for Research in Applied Linguistics in China (CRALC) was established as an associate of CRAL in Nottingham, UK. Members of staff are actively engaged in research in three main areas: Language, Literature and Creativity; Multilingualism and Education; and Professional and Intercultural Communication.

Staff appointed to the School work closely with colleagues from the School of English at the University of Nottingham, UK, one of the oldest and best respected Schools of English internationally. A new School in University of Nottingham Malaysia will also increasingly integrate into School activities. The three University Schools of English collaborate to strengthen already leading teaching and research activities. Postgraduate students have been taken on MA programmes in Applied Linguistics since 2007, undergraduate students on three BA programmes since 2009 as well as PhD students. The School is expected to expand staff and student numbers year on year.

The successful candidate will be expected to deliver lectures and seminars across all years of the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and to supervise undergraduate, Masters and PhD dissertations in the areas related to the study of Applied Linguistics. Teaching duties would be expected to involve a flexible approach to areas of applied linguistics offered on our undergraduate and Masters modules. There will be significant administrative responsibilities. Research expertise is expected to relate to relevant identified University and School research strands, namely: Language, Literature and Creativity; Multilingualism and Education; and Professional and Intercultural Communication. In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will be required to contribute to the ongoing development of a significant research base at the University.

Candidates must have a PhD degree in Applied Linguistics or related discipline. Candidates are expected to have proven academic and team leadership skills. Evidence of previous administrative roles and skills is essential. Experience of teaching/tutorial work in relevant subjects at undergraduate and postgraduate level in an international English-speaking institution is also required. Candidates shall also have sustained track record in: publishing international quality research in peer-reviewed journals and undertaking major research projects as well as in winnkng research funding.

Salary will be minimum £58,754 per annum depending on skills and experience. In addition, an attractive package including accommodation allowance, travel allowance and insurance will be provided for international appointments.

This post is available from 1 August 2016 or as soon as possible based on mutual agreement, and will initially be offered on a fixed-term contract with the University of Nottingham, Ningbo, China for a period of up to five years. This contract may be extended on an indefinite basis by mutual agreement, subject to revised terms and conditions.

The School of English is seeking to appoint a full-time Research Associate/Fellow from 1 January 2016 on a fixed term post until 27 October 2016.
The Research Associate/Fellow will be part of an ESRC funded project on communication in health care settings, under the direction of Dr Sarah Atkins.
This post will form part of the new research cluster and business unit, Linguistic Profiling for Professionals (LiPP), based in the Centre for Research in Applied Linguistics.

The work will build on research that looks at the assessment of communication skills in the health professions, particularly as it is currently tested through role-played scenarios with simulated patients. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with a range of video and written datasets. This work will involve transcription and assistance with analytic tasks, with the aim of producing publications and materials for dissemination to health professionals. The post holder will also help in compiling research bids within the LiPP research cluster. Applicants must demonstrate some prior experience of working with and analysing recorded data of spoken interactions. Candidates should have a first degree (or equivalent) in a relevant area of English Language and Applied Linguistics. A PhD (or equivalent) in linguistics or other appropriate subject is required upon appointment.
