The first issue will be published in January 2019. Submissions are invited for the second issue, on the human cost of social conflict.

Photo ContestSIETAR Italia’s “Feeling Italian” photography contest invites you to tell, through the photographic language, what it means to “feel Italian” today, in an Italy defined by deep changes, not only in demographic terms, but also in terms of behaviors, customs and values. Through the photo contest, SIETAR Italia project want to explore who the Italians are today.

  • What are the behaviors and symbols that evoke “Italianness”?
  • What are the places, the ways and the meeting situations?
  • What are the activities and rituals – individual or collective – that allow us to perceive Italians, or to be perceived as Italians?

The “Feeling Italian” photographic competition wants to investigate the elements of continuity with the past, or with the traditional concepts related to Italianness and to feeling Italian; but also, and above all, the transformations taking place in an Italy that is evolving within a global context.

The Department is particularly interested in applicants whose research has a strong grounding in linguistic theory and who employ conventional and/or contemporary research methods to address core issues in linguistics. The normal course load is six courses per year (36-38 ECTS annually). Consistent with the mission of the University, applicants must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in both teaching and scholarship, have an active research agenda, and contribute to the Academic Travel program, a fundamental part of Franklin’s international, interdisciplinary, intercultural curriculum. Ideally, candidates will be conversant in one of the official languages of Switzerland, have an international outlook, and demonstrate an interest in collaborating across disciplines. Practical experience in industry or corporate governance is preferred.

“Over the last 15 years, StoryCorps has perfected a method for helping people feel more connected and for reminding us of the inherent worth of every person and every story. People come together to have otherwise impossible conversations, using our tools and questions. The microphone gives them license to talk about things they otherwise might not discuss.

Now, we are doing something different. We are asking people with different political views to record a StoryCorps interview with each other. Why? To break down boundaries created by politics and remember our shared humanity. To remind us that we have more in common than divides us and that treating those with whom we disagree with decency and respect is essential to a functioning democracy.

Social media and the internet have opened up new forms of empowerment and oppression that may particularly affect the lives of the marginalized. Marginality, as they are defining it, following Gatzweiler and Baumüller (2013), can be understood as the experience of disadvantaged (typically involuntarily) people or groups who are excluded from the resources and opportunities they need to participate as full and equal members of society. Marginality influences what people can achieve and limits their abilities to take advantage of the resources and opportunities afforded to non-marginalized peers. Further, marginalized individuals and groups are often politically, economically, and/or socially vulnerable, as their susceptibility to harm is greater, often due to to their exclusion from critical resources.
They seek submissions relating to social media and marginalization, broadly construed.
