St. Petersburg College is offering a new study abroad program in Nova Scotia, Canada next May, 2015. The courses offered will begin with the Study Abroad component in Halifax (May 15-25) and then continue online after the return to the U.S. This program will combine the study of two courses, world literature and mass media and pop culture. Some of the sites on the schedule for visits include: the Titanic Museum, the Bay of Fundy; Lunenburg; Peggy’s Cove; the CBC; the Global television network; and many other sites relevant to the exciting night life and pop culture of Nova Scotia.

Summer International/Intercultural and Backpack Journalism Program

For the eleventh summer Gonzaga University Master’s in Communication and Leadership Program is offering its Summer International/Intercultural and Backpack Journalism Program. Open to all graduate students or graduating seniors, the program begins in Florence and then moves into the Apennine Mountain medieval city of Cagli, where students in the Cagli Project are assigned to develop multi-media storytelling projects. Time is spent in class, in the field researching and producing stories, and in the lab completing assignments and coordinating the elements of each story. This year there are five specific course modules: Intercultural Communication, Italian language and culture (these modules include Journaling), Profile Writing, Photography, and Digital Design. The program also includes a day-trip to Urbino and free weekend-travel.   Because of the setting of this program, students will have a unique opportunity to learn how to access a foreign culture and to acquire practical language skills rapidly by using an immersion technique. The ability to assimilate quickly and to hone in on another culture¹s values are indispensable tools for anyone preparing for a career in a field where globalization and intercultural communication are becoming increasingly important. At the micro level, students will learn how “to read” another culture on its own terms — thereby eliminating cultural bias.  At the macro level, students will be ready to become facilitators in the intercultural dialogue that the modern world requires.This program is open to graduating seniors and graduate students.  The Program costs include 6 graduate credits, hotels and apartments, in county transportation, some meals, technology, and closing exhibition.   The summer session is June 8June 24, 2015, with online content pre and post Italy. Study International Public Relations in London Summer 2015!

From the tower of London to Westminster Abbey’s soaring arches, this London-based seminar offers students the opportunity to live in one of the most cosmopolitan cities while interacting with and learning from international public relations practitioners.

The seminar will be held May 31June 26, 2015 at Regent’s University in London. Dr. Ashli Q. Stokes, Associate Professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and co-author of Global Public Relations: Spanning Borders, Spanning Cultures will lead this year’s seminar. The Public Relations in the United Kingdom program is designed to acquaint students with the complexities of public relations practice in an international setting.  In addition to classes led by Dr. Stokes, students will attend lectures led by some of Europe’s leading practitioners and educators, work on internationally-themed projects, and take part in field trips to public relations firms and other relevant organizations throughout the greater London area.

Students will attend classes directed by Dr. Stokes during the week at Regent’s University London, located in the heart of central London just a short distance from Buckingham Palace and world-famous shopping on Oxford Street. Classroom coursework will be supplemented by visits to various international public relations and related organizations.

Study abroad in Cuba: January 2015

Global Perspectives: Climate Change Reporting in Cuba

Adelphi University’s journalism program is offering a 2-week study abroad course in Cuba this January. The course is worth 3-credits and open to undergraduate students from all universities.

This unique course, “Global Perspectives: Climate Change Reporting in Cuba,” introduces students to the impacts of climate change and reporting about climate change in an international context.  From January 8 to 20, 2015, the class will travel to Cuba and visit Havana as well as some more rural parts of the western Cuban coastline.

Students will be interviewing, shooting video, capturing audio and reporting for a website. They will be meeting climate change experts, local stakeholders, media professionals and government officials and will ultimately observe how climate changes are converging in one of the most misunderstood and culturally rich places on Earth.

Discourse Studies is a field which studies meaning- and sense-making practices in their political, social and historical contexts. The DiscourseNet Winter School brings together advanced BA and MA as well as PhD students who want to pursue research in Discourse Studies and to discuss the methodological and theoretical challenges of their thesis projects (or first ideas). Its aim is to bring young and confirmed discourse researchers together and to address practical challenges in discourse research. The event will privilege collaborative exchange and hands-on research experience in a rather informal workshop setting. Introductory lectures will be given by Johannes Angermuller (Warwick), Benno Herzog (Valencia) and Luisa Martín Rojo (Madrid).

Participants can come from linguistics, sociology, political sciences, literary and cultural studies, media and communication, education, geography and related areas in the social sciences and humanities. The DiscourseNet Winter School is free but a small contribution for coffee etc. may be charged. There are places for 15-20 students. A limited number of stipends is available for students in need of financial support for travel and accommodation. The working language is English. Participants can stay until the weekend after and join in the social activities with the group.

Applicants are expected to send in proposals which include a short letter of motivation, an abstract with one’s project (no more than one page) as well as an (academic) CV. If a stipend is needed, the organisers would expect a short explanation why financial assistance is needed (e.g. lack of institutional support). The abstract will consist of a title and a description of the proposed research project which can deal with academic, educational and intellectual discourses and/or methodological questions in discourse research.

Proposals should be sent in by the 30th of September 2014. In case of acceptance, each participant will send in a 10-page version of the research project by December 15th 2014. These longer versions will define the research object, lay out the research questions, situate the project in the field and reflect on the preferred methods. These longer versions will circulate among the participants prior to the event. During the DiscourseNet Winter School, the students will not read their papers but elaborate on specific points, practical problems and methodological challenges of their projects. If they wish, the participants can stay the weekend after and join in the social activities with the organisers in the Valencia region.

The Winter School is a Warwick-Valencia event, organised by members of DiscourseNet, an interdisciplinary and international network of discourse researchers existing since 2007. It is supported by the ERC DISCONEX project, led by Johannes Angermuller, which studies academic discourse in the social sciences and humanities. DiscourseNet regularly organizes workshops, e.g. DiscourseNet 14 in Mannheim (Germany, winter 2014), DiscourseNet 15 in Belgrade (Serbia, spring 2015), DiscourseNet 16 in Bremen (Germany, autumn 2015) and DiscourseNet 17 in Pamplona (Spain, spring 2016).

“We are currently conducting a longitudinal study in which we examine the factors that affect international students’ communication with host nationals. If you are an incoming international student (i.e., first semester in the United States) or if you know such students that you could forward this message to, we would appreciate your help with completing an online survey.

The survey has demographic questions, questions about expected communicate with host nationals, and anticipated experiences. Participation is completely voluntary. At the end of the survey, participants can enter a raffle to win Amazon gift cards.

International Week Tampere U Applied Sciences (Finland)

Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK), School of Vocational Teacher Education organizes an international week in Tampere 6th – 10th May 2014. Theme of the week is Individual Learning Paths. Encouraging new forms of transdisciplinary discourse and research the anthropocene project 2013/14 at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin (HKW) aims to investigate the manifold implications of the Anthropocene hypothesis for cultures of knowledge. If indeed humankind has become the dominant biogeophysical force, effecting changes on a planetary scale, how can the arts, sciences and humanities contribute to a critical awareness, understanding and responsible co-shaping of these transformations? How can creative and problem-oriented modes of knowledge production and educational practices be developed?

The anthropocene curriculum addresses these questions by way of a cross-disciplinary experiment in higher education. Initiated by HKW and the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin (MPIWG) the project has brought together a group of 27 renowned university teachers from science, the humanities, and art & design. They are collaboratively developing a set of topics relevant to the Anthropocene in an attempt to encourage the integration of cross-disciplinary thinking, mutual learning, and civic commitment in the curricula of universities and research institutions.

This exemplary curriculum will be put into teaching practice at the anthropocene campus taking place november 14-22, 2014 at HKW in Berlin. One hundred international participants will be given the opportunity to engage in this curricular experiment, contributing their own perspectives and expertise. The campus provides a transdisciplinary co-learning space for young scholars from a wide range of disciplinary, academic, and professional backgrounds and opens up a forum for exploring the scopes, scales, and designs of Anthropocene relevant knowledge. The anthropocene campus will be a central component of a series of public events at HKW–including lectures, workshops, exhibitions, screenings, and artistic events – by which the two-year anthropocene project will come to its close.

Applicants should be strongly committed to interdisciplinary collaboration and demonstrate a broad interest in Anthropocene related research questions. Active participation is expected both during the Campus as well as in pre- and postwork to be assigned by the instructors.

An essential part of the output of the anthropocene curriculum will be the collaborative production of an anthropocene coursebook. The online platform will serve as central tool for the development and communication of syllabi, coursework, and the coursebook, and provide a long-time discussion space for all participants.

Applicants
The call primarily addresses doctoral students (or equivalent) from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds in the sciences, humanities, engineering, design, and the arts. However, excellent final-year master’s degree candidates as well as postdocs are also encouraged to apply. Moreover, the call extends to researchers and actors from outside of academia, including research oriented institutions from civil society, the arts and politics (e.g. think-tanks, NGOs).

The working language will be English.

Procedure
All applications must be made using the online application form on our website:
anthropocene-curriculum.org, and submitted no later than April 30, 2014. Applicants must submit a CV, a brief description of their interest in the Anthropocene–as well as the anthropocene curriculum project in particular–and name a reference person.

Acceptance
Letters will be sent out until May 30, 2014. Registration for the campus begins on June 16, 2014 on the website, where participants will have the opportunity to choose their individual course from among the series of seminars.

Registration & funding
The registration fee of € 100 covers meals and accommodation. The participants are expected to procure their own travel funding. A very limited number of need-based travel grants can be provided. Please indicate and specify your necessity in the application form.
