Gizem Arat is Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Policy at Lingnan University, Hong Kong.

She earned her PhD degree from the University of Hong Kong in Social Work and Social Administration. She has been a Post-doctoral fellow at the University of Hong Kong, working on the promotion of social inclusion of ethnic minority youth.
Prior to her Ph.D. journey, she obtained her MSW from the University of Pittsburgh, in the School of Social Work. After her MSW degree, she was passionate to expand her knowledge of Eastern settings to gain a dual perspective (East and West) on social work. Her current research areas include the promotion of social justice and social harmony, positive youth development, and resilience in ethnic minority youth in Asian and global contexts. She is interested in hiking, exploring new cultures and meeting new people with diverse backgrounds.

Dr. Bardhan’s teaching interests include intercultural/international communication, public relations and critical media and cultural studies. In her research, she particularly focuses on identity/difference/culture, diversity and inclusion, globalization and postcolonial theory. She teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses and has been awarded the Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award in the Department of Communication Studies at SIUC three times. She advised the department’s Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) chapter for 10 years.
He was a member of the NCA’s Task Force to Foster International Collaborations in the Age of Globalization and worked with the Communication University of China to co-organize the 2016 and 2018 NCA-CUC co-sponsored biennial conferences on, “Communication, Media, and Governance in the Age of Globalization.” In 2019 he worked with Shenzhen University (SZU) to co-organize the NCA-SZU 2019 Shenzhen Forum on “Communication Innovation, New Media, and Digital Journalism.”


Her main research focuses on the status, barriers, and employment opportunities of skilled immigrants and refugees in the Icelandic labor market; diversity and inclusion; gender equality; and age and ageism.
