U Edinburgh Job Ad: Discourse Analysis (UK)

The School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences at the University of Edinburgh is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Discourse Analysis to our department of Linguistics and English Language.  The successful candidate will contribute original research and public impact in an area of discourse analysis, offer teaching at all levels of the curriculum in this area, contribute to our thriving MSc programme in Applied Linguistics including directing the degree when necessary, and recruit and supervise PhD students.

Shortlisting is anticipated to take place week commencing 12th March 2018. We aim to contact shortlisted candidates at least two week in advance.

Short-listed candidates will be required to give two presentations on their research and teaching to the department as well as an interview panel process. A full timetable will be issued in advance. Interviews are like to take place week commencing 2nd April 2018.

Senior Scholar in Global Studies

The School of Humanities and Social Science at CUHK (SZ) invites nominations and applications for a senior scholar position in the area of global studies (broadly defined, including, but not limited to, international relations, international and regional studies, globalization development and trends, global governance, global sustainability, etc.).

Candidates for this senior position are expected to have prior experience in leadership position(s) in the relevant areas, and to have attained professorship rank (or equivalent) or above (e.g., distinguished professorship, chair professorship) in competitive institutions. The successful candidate for this position is expected to serve as the leader in establishing and developing a center/program of excellence in the area of global studies (broadly defined, and name tentative).

Appointments will normally be made on contract basis for up to three years initially, leading to longer-term appointment or tenure later, subject to successful performance evaluation and mutual agreement. In cases where a candidate has an established record of excellence and demonstrable potential for continued success, tenure may be offered to the candidate at the time of initial appointment.

The Program on Intergroup Relations is a joint academic and student life program concerning social diversity and social justice. As such, we have a shared leadership model across the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) and Student Life. IGR offers a minor in intergroup relations education, opportunities for undergraduate research, co-curricular programming, national consultations and campus outreach.

The LSA Associate Director for IGR assists in providing campus leadership in student learning in the area of intergroup relations and social justice education. The associate director assists in strategic planning efforts, vision and long-term planning, supervision and empowerment of staff, and administrative and fiscal responsibility. In particular, this individual guides IGR’s curricular activities and serves on the IGR curriculum committee. The associate director is also an academic advisor for the IGR minor. This person is responsible for the selection and training of graduate student instructors and leads our course recruitment efforts. Additionally, this individual oversees the administration of the LSA operations of the joint unit and liaises with the College on operations of the unit such as finance and HR matters. Additionally, this person must have the skills, expertise, and interest to conduct intergroup dialogue/relations research and mentor student research assistants. This position requires domain knowledge, skills, and abilities pertaining to intergroup, intercultural, social justice education, student development, identity development, and group facilitation and may consult with campus and national constituents on these matters. The LSA Associate Director serves in the LSA Director’s absence.

Visiting Fellows: Communication & Media Research (China)

Fellows will serve one-semester appointments-in-residence. Fall Fellows will serve September 1 through the end of December; Spring Fellows will serve February 1 through the end of May. During this one-semester residency, Fellows will not teach. Fellows will conduct research on their proposed projects in line with the VFP’s annual theme (see section on theme below), and they will be responsible for delivering four public talks, workshops, or other scholarly programs meant to advance NCA’s mission, the broad goals of the VFP, and the interests of intercultural collaboration. NCA and CUC will each select one Fellow for each academic term, so the VFP will consist of two Fellows each term (or four per academic year). Fellows will be guided in their work by the NCA’s “Credo for Ethical Communication,” which offers robust support for free speech, intellectual inquiry, and intercultural sensitivity. CUC endorses this document’s values and norms.

THE 2018-19 THEME: For our inaugural class of Fellows, the research theme is “The China Dream, the American Dream, and Communicating National Narratives.” Successful applicants will address this theme in their research and public events. So that colleagues may plan ahead, the 2019–20 theme will be “Global Environmental Communication in the Age of Crises.” The 2020–21 theme will be “New Media, New Markets, and Netizens.”

The VFP will be hosted on the campus of the Communication University of China (hereafter CUC). CUC has previously partnered with NCA in co-hosting the biennial summer conferences on “Communication, Media, and Governance in the Age of Globalization.”

 

King’s College London Job Ad: Digital Humanities

A researcher is required on a new EU project investigating the use of participatory software platforms for community engagement and crowdsourcing around digital archives and data, with the aim of creating digital spaces for reflection and dialogue to support peace education and reconciliation in societies emerging from conflict. The software will be built on the Ushahidi platform, and there will be two pilots in east Africa (Rwanda and Kenya), following a ‘living labs’ methodology based on participatory design and evaluation.

The project will use data analytics to investigate how user communities interact with and respond to the platform, and to evaluate its impact. More broadly, the project aims to address the potential applications of data in a development context, and to build sustainable partnerships and capacity in digital content technologies with industry and university partners in the region. Candidates should have a broad understanding of information systems and technologies; an interest in the role of informatics in social development would be an advantage.
