The Scuola Superiore Meridionale (SSM) hereby announces a call for applications for PhD scholarships for the academic year 2026-2027 in the Doctoral Programs in Global History and Governance/ The program will award 5 scholarships for a duration of four-years. Courses will begin on November 2, 2026. No fees or contributions are required to enroll; scholarships will be disbursed monthly and additional research funding made available each year.

American Academy in Berlin: Berlin Prize Competition 2027-8 (Germany)

The American Academy in Berlin is an independent, nonprofit institute for advanced study in the arts, humanities, social sciences, law, journalism, and public policy. Its primary mission is to strengthen the cultural and intellectual ties between the United States and Germany. Each year, following a rigorous selection process, the Academy awards roughly two dozen semester-long fellowships to individuals who demonstrate excellence in their respective fields.

The Academy welcomes applications from a broad range of disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, law, journalism, and various areas of public policy. They also generally encourage projects that address pressing issues of the day, such as democracy, security, technology and society (especially AI), energy (including climate), and global order. Dedicated fellowships are also available to support projects in Jewish studies, German studies, and public health and biotechnology. While project proposals need not focus on topics related to Germany, candidates should explain how a residency in Berlin would enhance their work.

Malmö U: PHD Studentship: International Migration & Ethnic Relations (Sweden)

The Department of Global Political Studies is looking for a doctoral student as part of the research programme “Migration Society 2.0”. The programme is funded by Malmö University within the framework of the research centre MIM and involves collaboration with other MIM researchers and the centre director on the project.

The research programme is about the phenomenon of superdiversity and aims to increase the understanding of the new society that is emerging, Migration Society 2.0. Superdiversity is partly about quantity, that is, the growing proportion of the population that is immigrants or children of immigrants, and partly about complexity, that is, the variation and mix of ethnicities, national origins, migration channels, transnational anchor points, legal status, gender and age distribution, social class, etc. This development places new demands on how we think about and handle integration issues and inclusion and exclusion processes. However, there is not yet a comprehensive knowledge base for how this diversity has developed and is experienced in Sweden. MIM will therefore conduct a series of large-scale surveys on diversity and inclusion that will be repeated every two years. These surveys will generate a growing database that helps us understand and explain the patterns of migration, diversity, inclusion and exclusion that characterize Sweden and other comparable countries.

The survey will map diversity based on self-identified information about, for example, ethnicity, gender, religion, language, sexuality and social status, as well as perceived belonging, views on other groups and perceptions of social institutions.

The doctoral student is expected to formulate and carry out an independent individual research project using the Diversity and Inclusion Survey. In the application, the applicant must therefore attach a research plan with a preliminary idea of how diversity and inclusion can be investigated through survey studies. Applicants with an original and solid research plan characterized by theoretical and methodological maturity will be prioritized.

The Department of Politics, International Relations and Philosophy at Royal Holloway seeks to appoint a Lecturer in International Relations (Teaching and Research focus). The successful applicant would be expected to start in January 2027. This is a permanent position. The Department provides a full range of undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes to a diverse student body, and carries research across different sub-disciplines, including but not limited to the Global Politics and Development Centre, Centre for International Security, Centre for Islamic and West Asian Studies, Democracy and Elections Centre, New Political Communication Unit and the Gender Institute.

The successful candidate will convene and deliver modules in the International Relations curriculum. Applicants should be able to broaden the range of subfields researched in the department. Areas that the department has identified as underserved include Russia, China, Race/Ethnicity, and Environment/Climate Change, but this list is non-exhaustive, and candidates should feel free to make the case for their subfield.

U Amsterdam: Professor of Europe in a Global Context (Netherlands)

The Department of History, European Studies, Religious Studies, and CEDLA-Latin American Studies of the University of Amsterdam is looking to appoint a full Professor of Europe in a Global Context. This professorship in European Studies focuses on Europe and its relations in a global context. This chair will strengthen the interdisciplinary profile of European Studies in the Faculty of Humanities by focusing on Europe’s connections, interdependence and post-colonial legacies with other world regions. In doing so, it will also study the long-term changes in global dynamics and their political, cultural and social consequences for Europe’s position in the global world. Possible research themes could be (though are not limited to): security; environmental issues; transnational mobility (such as migration or transatlantic trade); EU foreign policy; European institutions and legacies of imperial structures; Europe as a global actor in the field of cultural developments and social movements. Expertise in the impact and interactions between the European continent and other continents is an explicit requirement of this professorship. Teaching and research of this professorship involve both European and non-European perspectives on the possible themes listed above, critically (re)assessing and contributing to an understanding of Europe’s interests, interdependencies and conflicts with other world regions. The candidate is expected to take a leading, proactive role within their interdisciplinary chair group, the department and the research school, and in research priority areas of the Faculty.
