The Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage is a research, collection, and public education unit of the Smithsonian dedicated to the understanding, preservation, and sustainability of diverse cultural traditions. The Director oversees the Center’s programs including the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections, the Cultural Sustainability Program and other activities as well as its administrative and financial affairs.

NOTE: There is a second position, for Director of the Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, with the same deadline. Both positions are open to all candidates eligible to work in the United States.

Erasmus+ Virtual Exchanges: Online Information Day

Online info session: Erasmus+ Virtual Exchanges funding opportunity. Online info session on 15 June 2022 from 14:00 to 17:00, Brussels time.

Erasmus+ Virtual Exchanges are online people-to-people activities that promote intercultural dialogue and soft skills development. They make it possible for every young person to access high-quality international and cross-cultural education (both formal and non-formal) without physical mobility. While virtual discussions or training do not fully replicate the benefits of physical mobility, participants in virtual exchanges can still reap a number of the benefits of international educational experiences. Virtual exchanges also help spread European values. In some cases, they can prepare, deepen and extend physical exchanges, as well as fuel new demand for them.

Virtual exchanges take place in small groups and are always moderated by a trained facilitator. They can be easily integrated into (non-formal education) youth projects or higher education courses. Virtual exchanges can draw participants from both sectors, even if, depending on specific projects, they could involve participants from either only one or both. All projects under this call will involve both organisations and participants coming from EU Member States or third countries associated with the programme, and from third countries not associated with the programme.

A call for proposals for funding has just been published, with a deadline of 20 September 2022. It can be found on the Funding & Tender Opportunities Portal. The aim of this info session is to provide information about the call for proposals and to give you the opportunity to ask questions.

ICOM: Workshop on International Partnerships (USA)

Call for applications: Workshop on Developing International Partnerships and Projects between USA and African museums, International Council of Museums, Washington, DC, 3-7 October, 2022. Deadline: 25 June 2022.

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) and the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) have joined forces to develop a training workshop aimed at empowering museums to develop international partnerships and projects. The programme, supported by ICOM US, is aimed at African and US museum professionals, who are eligible according to the criteria below. The workshop will take place in Washington, D.C., USA, from 3 to 7 October 2022.

The goal of the programme is to promote the exchange of experiences and methodologies that facilitate intercultural dialogue, the identification of allies and resources, and the development of partnerships in international and local contexts. Trainers from various regions of the world will be part of this exchange of knowledge and professional practice, which will in turn strengthen the communication and collaborative work among the members of the networks of African, African American and African diaspora museums.

ECREA Pre-conference, organized by both the Communication History section & the International and Intercultural communication section, The Trajectory of Emerging Media & Technology Companies: Transnational Businesses, Transcultural Communications. This is a hybrid event with venues at Aarhus University & Beijing Foreign Studies University, as well as the possibility to join online from anywhere else. It is meant to be as inclusive as possible.

This conference welcomes research papers that try to understand the rise of emerging media-technology power from interdisciplinary perspectives, with a special focus on the trans-nationalization process of these media and technology firms and the transcultural communication challenges they have been facing in their business development, expansion, concentration, implementation, legitimization, and related (organizational, institutional, and societal) discourses.

A selection of papers accepted to the pre-conference will be published in a Special Issue of Journal of Transcultural Communication (De Gruyter) in Spring 2023.

King’s College London: Language, Education & Linguistic Citizenship (UK)

Call for applications: Language, Education & Linguistic Citizenship, 20-21 July 2022, online. Deadline: 17 June 2022.

Language, Education & Linguistic Citizenship is a two-day online summer school program.

  • How can educators gain a better understanding of multilingual students’ use of language?
  • How can they acknowledge and foster their students’ linguistic repertoires and their right to be heard?
  • What is the relationship between language education and linguistic citizenship?

These and other questions will be explored in this participatory short course which will involve workshops, case studies, data sessions, readings and talks. You will join participants from a range of educational settings and sectors. The summer school is organised by HELD, a team of academics and third sector language professionals, activists & policy specialists: Melanie Cooke (convenor), Dermot Bryers, Sam Holmes, Constant Leung, Ben Rampton, Anthony Tomei, and Becky Winstanley.

Enrollment is limited to 30 participants. They will give priority to people whose work seems to fit with their aims and who they think will most benefit from the summer school, based on your application form. There is a participation fee of £30 (£10 for full time students), payable when your place has been confirmed.

Editors envision this collection to be interdisciplinary and multidimensional, thus incorporating a set of diasporic areas of research within the Ibero-Caribbean context. Chapters are double-blind peer refereed. An invitation to submit a paper in no way guarantees that the paper will be published; this is dependent on the review process. Unpublished and original papers, in English, Portuguese, Spanish, or French are welcome. Proposals that treat other topics not included below but that are of thematic relevance are welcome.

Complete chapter drafts should be approximately 4,500-6,500 words including endnotes and bibliography. Chapters must follow the MLA style rules, and will be due June 30, 2023.

Toronto Metropolitan U: Project Coordinator – Complex Migration Flows (Canada)

The Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Migration and Integration at Toronto Metropolitan University invites applications of interest from post-doctoral and more senior researchers for the position of a full-time Project Coordinator for a global partnership project examining complex migration flows and multiple drivers in comparative perspective. This six-year project adopts a socio-ecological systems framework that integrates the different drivers and types of migration. The multidisciplinary project will focus on the following:

  1. Generate new data and combine with existing evidence, to map the links between internal, intra-regional and intercontinental migration along complex corridors of population flows in three migration systems;

  2. Develop and test new analytical models that explain the interplay among migration drivers (environmental conditions, demographic and health factors, economic development dynamics, socio-political issues) taking into account also cultural and emotional processes that eventually shape people’s decisions to migrate; and

  3. Translate research knowledge into policy-tools (by developing digital visualization tools, interactive story-driven dashboards, and infographics modeled on approaches found in contemporary data journalism) that will support an efficient and rights-based governance of international migration.

The Peace and Conflict Studies (PCON) program at Colgate University seeks a visiting assistant professor for a one-year appointment beginning fall semester 2022. The Peace and Conflict Studies program focuses on developing critical understandings of organized violence in all its forms (physical, structural, symbolic, etc.) and how such violence has shaped the world both historically and in the present. The program will consider candidates with training in any disciplinary or interdisciplinary field, and welcomes candidates with any regional specialization, including those whose work focuses on transnational phenomena. Candidates are particularly encouraged to apply if their work engages with marginalized perspectives, spaces, theories, and/or methodologies. All prospective candidates should highlight the ways in which their intellectual interests and teaching competencies are able to situate their empirical research, theoretical engagement, and utilization of critical methodologies (reflexive, collaborative, or otherwise) within a broader understanding of global and historical trends in peace and conflict.

The holder of this position will be able to make teaching contributions at all levels of the program’s curriculum so long as they are consistent with the candidate’s training and the program’s needs. In addition to making contributions to the introductory curriculum (“PCON 111: Introduction to Peace and Conflict Studies” and “PCON 218: Practices of Peace and Conflict – War in Lived Experience”), the successful candidate may also contribute to program electives, senior seminars, and the university’s Liberal Arts Core Curriculum. The annual teaching requirement for Colgate faculty is five courses, typically distributed over two semesters as either a 3/2 or 2/3 load. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to contribute to program activities, including lectures, workshops, and events to support faculty scholarship and student engagement. The successful candidate will have a doctorate in hand or will complete the doctorate by the start of the semester.
