Responsibilities:
The Director of the CIEE Global Institute – London is responsible for the quality and success of CIEE programs offered in London, with overall responsibility for the management of all aspects of the Global Institute, ensuring the highest levels of quality and customer satisfaction. A significant feature of the work is the planning and delivery of the CIEE Open Campus program, a highly innovative study abroad concept that enables students to design a program from six to 36 weeks, in up to three different locations. This program is defined by the highest standards of educational quality, rigorous coordination between Open Campus locations, and providing access to students of diverse backgrounds. The Director works closely with a core management team who are responsible for the effective, timely, and on-budget delivery of multiple program aspects.

Skills and Experience:
Successful applicants will be seasoned professionals with at least five years’ experience in a leadership role within study abroad, international educational exchange, or a related higher education institutional setting. A Ph.D. is preferred, while a Master’s degree is required.

Summary of Position: The Student Life Director is responsible for design and delivery of student life programming, community and intercultural engagement activities, and establishing and enforcing procedures to maintain the health, safety, and security of the students at the Global Institute facility. The Director manages the staff of the Student Life Office (SLO) that facilitates cultural integration between students and the broader community in London and coordinates (with the Academics Department) the planning and delivery of experiential learning opportunities such as extra-curricular events, day-trips, and overnight Study Tours. The SLO staff also ensures student access to healthcare providers and establishes preventative and responsive measures and protocols to ensure residential safety and compliance with behavior requirements.

NOTE: CIEE is also advertising two related positions: Student Life Assistant and Operations Assistant, also based in London.

Witness for Peace, a politically independent, nationwide grassroots organization working to support peace, justice and sustainable economies in the Americas, is looking for delegates to join Mexico: The Drug War and Social Control: Militarization, Displacement, and Migration from January 13th-22nd, 2017. Witness for Peace delegations are based in popular education and are powerful, transformative experiences. As an organization they have an excellent record working with Communication Studies departments to build international study abroad courses emphasizing social justice.

The January delegation to Mexico (which includes Mexico City and Oaxaca) will look at the intersection between economic policy, community, and culture. These experiences are paradigm changing for anyone with an interest in teaching intercultural and critical communication.

Mexico: The Drug War and Social Control: Militarization, Displacement, and Migration

The transnational corporate presence in Mexico has been increasing since NAFTA went into effect in 1994, and even more since constitutional reforms were passed in 2014. Today, the government prioritizes corporate rights and land concessions for energy extraction, while the human rights record for the U.S.-funded military and police has continued to worsen. Increased military funding for the Drug war has fueled the corruption and violence, and forced disappearances, torture, arbitrary detentions, and kidnappings have continued to increase. Find out how this state repression relates to the implementation of a neoliberal agenda and learn how U.S. Drug War policy has encouraged militarization and fueled migration north. Strengthen your analysis of the links between transnational corporate interests, military aid, state repression of social movements, and forced displacement and migration.

Participants on this delegation will:

-Investigate the Mérida Initiative (the $2.4 billion U.S. military aid package to Mexico) and learn how it has led to an increase in human rights abuses

-Hear about the organizing struggles and successes of communities in resistance

-Meet with Mexican human rights and land rights activists from different eras (1960’s through today)

-Strengthen a global movement against militarization and corporate control

Cagli Project: Study Abroad in Italy 2017

Gonzaga University has announced that the Cagli Project is now available to advanced undergraduates as well as graduate students from any university.  This will be the 14th year of the Intercultural Communication and International Media Project in Cagli, Italy. Students can earn up to six graduate or undergraduate credits in communication and leadership in this cultural immersion project that stresses media convergence.  Come and discover the “real” Italy.  Recently one of their projects was featured in the American Journalism Review .

The program includes instruction in language and culture as well as photo, video, web design, writing and blogging.  Class begins in Florence and moves to historical Cagli in the Apennine Mountains.  The program also includes a day trip Assisi, the beautiful Renaissance city of Urbino, and there is free “weekend travel” to beautiful beaches or other Italian cities. Dates are June 17 – July 3, 2017.  The program has won several awards.

Study Abroad: Rhetoric & Performance in Ancient Greece 2017

Rhetoric and Performance in Ancient Greece (Villanova University)

As we all know, the communication discipline has its origins in the study of the spoken word and its power to influence political decisions and shape human communities. In this Summer Study Abroad program, Villanova University faculty accompany approximately 20 students on a journey through many of Greece’s historic, cultural, and natural sites in order to engage in the study of performance and rhetoric. Classes are taught open-air style in ancient sites (and on beaches) and students live in 3 or 4 star hotels while traveling from Athens to several Greek islands, Delphi, and Tolo.

Applications are open for this five-week, 6 – credit summer program that allows Communication majors and minors to gain important insights into the roots of the discipline and make contemporary applications through hands-on experience in Greece. The 2017 program consists of two interdependent courses that will engage students in understanding connections between the ancient and contemporary Greek worlds: one focuses on ancient Greek rhetoric, myth and ritual, with attention to the rhetorical shaping and performance of myth in Greek culture. The other focuses on the place of performance in ancient Greece from the time of Homer through the height of theatre in 5th century BCE Athens, with attention to the powerful relationships among performer, text, audience, and place.

The program will be taught by Dr. Shauna MacDonald & Dr. Heidi Rose (Villanova University), and will run from May 21, 2017 (Departure from the U.S.) to June 27, 2017. The deadline for applications is March 1, but we strongly encourage that students meet the early action deadline of Dec. 15, 2016.

Study in Ghana: Information & Communication Technologies

Study information and communication technologies in Ghana this summer

Applications are open for the study-abroad seminar: “Experience Research: Communication Technologies and Development in Southern Ghana.” If you’ve ever wondered whether information and communication technologies (ICTs) are really changing lives in African countries, this is an opportunity to find out for yourself. Design and carry out a research project to answer questions you have about the role of ICTs in socio-economic development. You do not need to have research experience, and we welcome both graduate and undergraduate students.

The program will be 4 weeks long and takes place from August 26 – September 25, 2016. The course may satisfy research methods or international development requirements for some departments. Currently at the University of Washington it satisfies the research methods requirement for Informatics students (INFO 470) and qualifies as an elective for the International Development Certificate Program (IDCP). We are happy to work with you and your advisor to determine if the program could satisfy requirements for other courses.

Study Abroad 2016 with Villanova University: Rhetoric in Greece

RHETORIC SUMMER STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM IN GREECE
5 weeks: May 15th to June 22nd 2016

The Department of Communication at Villanova University announces its 2016 Summer Study Abroad in Greece program–and invites applications from undergraduate students across the United States. Admission is competitive; early action deadline for application is December 15, 2015. Interested students should contact the 2016 Program Director, Dr. Bryan Crable, as soon as possible.

This amazing five-week, 6-credit summer program is specially designed to give Communication students important insights into the origin of the discipline and its relevance to contemporary public discourse. The program travels throughout Greece–including stops in Athens, Delphi, and Tolo as well as the Greek islands of Mykonos, Delos, Santorini, and Crete–as it focuses on the history of the spoken word–and its relation to epic storytelling, oratory, drama, and the life of the polis. The program, run annually since 2001, welcomes students who are majoring & minoring in Communication and closely related fields, such as English, Classics, Humanities, Honors, etc.

The program consists of two team-taught courses, one focusing on ancient Greek rhetoric and democracy (taught by Dr. Billie Murray, Villanova University), and the other on the rhetorical function of myth (taught by Dr. Bryan Crable, Villanova University). The courses take place on ancient archaeological sites and on hotel grounds (including, often, the beach). The size of the program is also ideal, since two faculty members are accompanied by 20-22 students, from universities across the country. This creates a unique learning environment, one that fosters a close intellectual and personal bond between students and faculty.

Scheduled site visits include the Athenian Acropolis, Agora, and Pnyx, Delphi,’s Temples of Apollo and Athena, Akrotiri on Santorini, Ancient Corinth, the Palace of Knossos on Crete, the sacred island of Delos, Agamemnon’s palace at Mycenae, and Epidaurus.  The program is housed in 3- and 4-star hotels throughout the duration of the trip, and program costs include tuition for 6 upper-level Villanova credit hours in COM, all land fees, all breakfasts, all site admissions, and in-country transportation via bus and ferry.
