1.Assistant Professor of Communication and Race

The Department of Communication seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position of Communication and Race beginning August 16, 2023. They welcome applications from candidates who can contribute to the Department’s curricular domains: interpersonal communication, organizational communication, rhetoric, media studies, public relations, media production, and science, health, environment, and risk communication. The successful candidate will teach COM 417, Communication and Race, and they especially welcome applicants from candidates whose teaching and research interests may include (but are not limited to) the following: black digital humanities, environmental humanities, BIPOC digital media and culture (including PR and media production), social movements and counterpublics, international/intercultural communication, and/or anti-colonial, decolonial and postcolonial theories and methods.

Summer School: Migration & Development (Czech Republic)

Geographic Migration Centre, a research institute affiliated with the Department of Social Geography and Regional Development, Faculty of Science, Charles University, Prague, with support of the International Migration Research Network (IMISCOE), has organized Summer School on Migration and Development in Prague, Czechia, 14 – 20 August 2022.

The one-week course will be organized at the Faculty of Science, Charles University, in the heart of the capital city, Prague (Albertov 6). Experienced and respected scholars and practitioners (from international and non-governmental organizations) from various countries will take part in the Summer School while delivering lectures and/or leading seminars, workshops, panel discussions on issues closely related to migration and development issues. These will be put into broader political, economic, sociocultural, demographic, and geographical contexts.

PHD Summer School in Mediterranean Migration Studies (Spain)

The main objective of this IMISCOE Summer School is to provide an intensive course promoting Mediterranean Migration Studies, whilst engaging students through multi-dynamic activities including lectures, roundtables, documentary screening as well as PhD. Further, multi-disciplinarity, multi-topics, multi-methodologies and multi-sited coverage will be ensured, one important way this will be done is through the inclusion of narratives from the South providing new views, voices, and perspectives.

Case Studies Japan (Travel Grants to Japan)

Study AbroadCase Studies Japan: Research Trip to Japan for Interdisciplinary Scholars and Graduate Students, Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnerships, Tokyo, Japan. Deadline: December 1, 2020.

This initiative offers an opportunity for an interdisciplinary group of faculty members and graduate students at U.S. institutions to travel to Japan and conduct case study field research in the realms of the humanities and social sciences. The goal is to provide participants, especially those who may not be familiar with Japan, with firsthand experiences to gain a deeper understanding of and make connections in Japan that will be useful in their own disciplines after the trip.

Eligibility: U.S. universities, colleges, or institutions with 501(c)3 status. A “Project Director,” who is a faculty member and Japan specialist from the applying institution, should have a PhD or terminal degree in their field and teach Japan-related courses, and must accompany the group on the trip. The group must include at least 5 faculty members and/or students not including the project director. More than half of the participants must not be specialized in Japanese Studies. Participants should primarily be from the applying institution, but those invited from relevant nearby institutions may also be considered.

The Global Experience Office (GEO) is a central office of global education at Northeastern University, committed to ensuring that every Northeastern student has an opportunity to engage in intellectually challenging and culturally enriching experiences throughout the world. To achieve this, GEO partners with Northeastern colleges and units to integrate global experiences into their curricula and to enhance their capacity in operating global programs. With supervision from the Associate Director team, the Program Manager is accountable for the day to day oversight of each assigned off-site location, specifically in relation to first-year international programs such as the N.U.in Program, Global Engagement Program, and Global Quest. This role interacts and manages the onsite staff of the N.U.in Program to ensure that all agreements, promises, and other commitments made via contract and other obligations are fulfilled. The Program Manager should have a working knowledge of higher education student life as well as the trends in international education management. This position requires significant interaction with departments, institutions, and individuals both on and off campus in a fast-paced international environment. As such, the Program Manager possess excellent problem solving, communication, and organizational skills with strong attention to detail. Additionally, this position demands a significant amount of patience, flexibility, and initiative.

Massey U Expedition & Internship Program (New Zealand)

Massey University’s National Expedition and Internship Program is open to undergraduate students from any university wishing to study, travel, and intern in New Zealand for 6 weeks in June-July 2020. The program is organised by the ACEJMC-accredited School of Communication, Journalism and Marketing, and it begins with the two week ‘Image and Identity Tour’ which takes students across both Islands to delve into how successful the brands and images of the tourism industry are at capturing the attention of people new to the country and culture.

The tour finishes in the capital city of Wellington where students stay to complete a four week internship working on real world problems relevant to their degrees in Journalism, Media Studies, Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Communication, or related areas.

Ethnography, Language, Communication Summer School (England)

Is ‘qualitative data analysis’ too vague for you? Are you wondering how to do justice to your data? If you are researching social processes, institutions, culture or identity,  but are unsure about how to analyse the discourse data from your fieldwork, then consider joining this five-day research training course. 
The programme is designed to help PhD and post-doctoral researchers to navigate the twin perils of over- and under-interpreting discourse data. It introduces a range of key perspectives and tools used to study language and communication ethnographically and it facilitates the study of social practice in a wide range of different settings – education, workplace, recreation, health etc.
