Nominations are invited for the 2015 International and Intercultural Communication Division Distinguished Scholarship Awards for work copyrighted in 2014. Up to five awards will be given in the following categories:

Awards will be presented at the International and Intercultural Communication Division Business Meeting in Las Vegas at the 2015 NCA Convention. Recipients of the awards will be notified by September 1, 2015 and are expected to be present for the award presentations. Self, peer, or advisor nominations are welcomed. The awards committee will not accept more than one submission of the same co-/author, whether they are nominated or self-nominated, regardless of category. Works must have been copyrighted during the 2014 calendar year.

Assistant Professor in International Communication & Media Studies at Webster University

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in Communication in hand by August, 2015. A scholar who works at the intersection of communication and culture at the global level from a qualitative, critical, interpretative, textual or rhetorical perspective. Applicants must possess an active research program in the area of communication and culture globally as well as demonstrated teaching effectiveness at the undergraduate level.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will have research expertise in international or transnational communication at the macro level in order to broaden students’ perspectives about the ways that global issues influence the study of communication. Candidate has experience teaching intercultural communication. Areas of preferred emphasis include one or more of the following: human rights, global movements, international labor issues, postcolonialism, international relations, cultural inflections of citizenship and public culture, NGOs, terrorist studies, sovereignty, critical whiteness studies, international disputes, and/or globalization. Demonstrated intercultural commitment and experience with diverse groups in teaching, research and/or service is preferred.

DUTIES: The successful candidate will:
• Develop new electives in their areas of expertise;
• Deliver Intercultural Communication (COMM 330) and assist in delivering one or more of the following courses: Introduction to Communication (COMM 100), Argumentation and Dialogue (COMM 200), or Communication Theory (COMM 300);
• Serve the Critical Intercultural Communication minor;
• Teach and develop courses in the Communication major;
• Develop and sustain a research program that will lead to peer-reviewed publications;
• Engage with the community through department, college, university, discipline, and community service.

The department consists of 11 tenure track faculty and sixteen lecturers who offer two undergraduate degree programs (i.e., one in Communication and another in Mass Media), and two minors (i.e., Communication and Critical Intercultural Communication) to slightly over 800 students, in addition to multiple sections of Oral Communication (GEO 102) that serve the entire university.

Penn State job ad: International Communication

The Department of Film-Video and Media Studies at Pennsylvania State University is seeking candidates with the ability to contribute to the broad intellectual and creative life of an interdisciplinary media studies program. As such, we seek to fill a tenure-track assistant professor position in international communication starting August 2015.

Candidates should have demonstrable research interest and teaching expertise in international communication and related topics (e.g., comparative media systems). To that end, experiential knowledge in the form of grounded research exposure and/or an extended period living outside the US is advantageous. Applicants with geopolitical expertise related to the regions/countries within Central/South America or the Middle East are particularly encouraged to apply.

Key responsibilities include teaching two courses per semester (including – with required qualification – the possibility of graduate-level teaching and mentoring), service on departmental and college committees and the active pursuit of a substantive research/creative agenda. As a department committed to the premise of integrated educational experiences including a study abroad component (embedded/summer programs) for students interested in international communication, the preferred candidate will bring an interest, fresh ideas, and an enterprising agenda for developing similar initiatives in his/her area of expertise on board. An earned Ph.D. in Mass Communication, Media Studies, or a related field is preferred, although ABD status will be considered.

The College of Communications at Penn State is home to four departments: Advertising/Public Relations; Film-Video and Media Studies; Journalism; and Telecommunications. In addition, the College offers a master’s degree program in media studies, and a Ph.D. program in mass communications. The University Park Campus is set in State College, a university town located in the heart of central Pennsylvania. State College offers a vibrant community with outstanding recreational and cultural activities, and excellent public schools. This position is intended to enhance our strategic initiative in Global Media and Technology. Applicants should demonstrate an active research program in global media studies, international communication, or closely related areas in communication. The Department of Communication, Languages and Cultures at Coastal Carolina University invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor for Intercultural/International Communication.

A Ph.D. in Communication, Anthropology, or Language with teaching experience and coursework in intercultural/international is required. Preference will be given to applicants who are qualified to teach (have 18 credit hours) in one of the Department’s areas of language instruction:  German, French or Italian.  A record that indicates the potential for scholarly productivity and success, and demonstrated interest in institutional service is required. Candidates should ideally possess instructional/research interests and competencies in key areas that could include cross-cultural communication, acculturation, language and culture, semiotics or sociolinguistics. Additional languages and/or cultural proficiencies may be considered. The successful candidate will work with members of the Department to strategically develop courses in intercultural/international communication. Teaching assignments may include evening/weekend courses. The appointment will be effective either January 9, 2015 or August 16, 2015 depending on availability of the candidate.

The conference addresses both the meta-analysis of “diversity” and an analysis of the organization and practice of diversity. Diversity concepts take different sociocultural categories into account and implement these in organizational and institutional contexts. As such “diversity“ can be seen both as a normative concept and as a social phenomenon. Normative ideas can be found in concepts such as “representation“ (e.g. the representation of social minorities in the media), “participation“ (the participation in public communication of diverse layers and groups within the population), “plurality” or “variety” (among communicators, contents and opinions).

Does our discipline provide the appropriate tools for researching diversity in communication processes? Which theories and concepts are available for the research of communication ethics in inter-national and/or transcultural communication with respect to the phenomenon diversity? Which normative and empirical foundations are they based on? This leads to a second, more application-oriented issue and potential key topic of the conference: diversity as an operational instruction, task and/or practice.

Contributions on the following topics are welcomed:
1. Theoretical Concepts of Diversity
•   State of the art: disciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches; basic theories and medium-range theories concerning the research of “diversity”
•   Boundaries and overlaps of terms and theories concerning the concepts of “cosmopolitanism,” “multiculturalism,” “interculturalism,” “transculturalism” and “hybridity” among others
•   The typology and analysis of intercultural communication processes and situations from the point of view of communication ethics
•   International comparisons: Which diversity concepts exist and how do other research communities in other countries research “diversity”? Is diversity research euro-centric?

2. Empirical Research on Diversity
•   Public representations and constructions of social differences and equality in mass media content, in (micro-)blogs, social media, event communication, PR etc.
•   Analysis of public and/or academic discourse on “diversity“
•   Diversity in media professions (public visibility of those working in media professions such as journalism, PR, advertising, film, theatre etc.)
•   Diversity as a Norm of communication ethics (e.g. in international/ intercultural communication)
•   Diversity management in media corporations
•   Case studies on diversity as an element and normative control parameter of diverse communication processes (political communication, journalism, PR, company and organizational communication…)
•   Diversity and justice under circumstances of mediatization and globalisation
•   Diversity as a factor in media and communication politics and policies

Submission and selection of papers
Please send your anonymized proposal for a 20-minute presentation in English (preferred) or German to Prof. Dr. Stefanie Averbeck-Lietz no later than JUNE 10, 2014 (using a single pdf file). The abstract should not be longer than 8000 characters (including blank spaces) and should be assigned to the conference topics. Please add a title page to the abstract containing the name(s) and address(es) of the presenter(s) and the title of the presentation. All submissions will be anonymously peer-reviewed according to the criteria of originality, relevance, theoretical foundation, appropriateness of the methods used, clarity of language, and reference to the conference theme. Submitters will be informed about the outcome of the selection process by July 2014.

Dr. Margarita Kefalaki is the founder and current President of Communication Institute of Greece (COMING).

Margarita Kefalaki

She holds a Ph.D. in Cultural Communication and a Master degree in Communication from Pascal Paoli University in Corsica (France). Additionally she holds a Bachelor degree in cultural communication and organization of events from Vauban University in Nimes (Montpellier III).

Her research focuses on intercultural communication, particularly the role of music and dance to connect people and nations. Margarita is also interested in communication and its connection with media, tourism, marketing and management. Margarita has taught in several universities in Greece and France, and has published widely in academic and policy journals such Journal of ‘Business and Management Research’ and the ‘International Small Business Journal’.  Moreover, she has successfully led several intercultural projects inclluding the creation of a musical disc in three languages (Action3 of the European Program for young People of INJEP).  Margarita believes that we can better communicate through intercultural comprehension, communication, exchange and education Academics can contribute to this exchange process. This is what she is trying to achieve with the establishment of the Communication Institute of Greece and the organization of International Academic Conferences.

Before joining CRI, Dr. Huang worked as Associate Professor at the Center for International Communication Studies, China International Publishing Group (Beijing), Associate Professor at Heilongjiang University (China), Lecturer and Tutor in Macquarie University (Australia), and Lecturer in Beijing Normal University, Zhuhai campus (China).

She has a PhD in Music, Media, Culture and Communication Studies from Macquarie University, Australia, and MA in Communication from Westminster University, UK. Her research interests include international communications, audience studies, and new media.
