The Pennsylvania State University seeks a scholar-administrator for the position of Director for the Office of Global Programs at Penn State Abington. The Penn State Abington College is home to nearly 4,000 students and more than 320 faculty. The Office of Global Programs is at the intersection of International Student Services and Education Abroad on the Penn State Abington campus, and represents this college within a network of international education professionals across the University. The Director acts in the capacity of a senior international officer (SIO) for the campus and provides visionary leadership recognizing the profound connection of student success to the college’s global mission. The Director oversees a centralized office that provides education abroad and international student services for the Abington campus community and in collaboration with Penn State Global Programs. The Director is knowledgeable in the areas of immigration advising, programming, intercultural communication and global engagement development.

The Department of Film-Video and Media Studies at Pennsylvania State University is seeking candidates with the ability to contribute to the broad intellectual and creative life of an interdisciplinary media studies program. As such, we seek to fill a tenure-track assistant professor position in international communication starting August 2015.

Candidates should have demonstrable research interest and teaching expertise in international communication and related topics (e.g., comparative media systems). To that end, experiential knowledge in the form of grounded research exposure and/or an extended period living outside the US is advantageous. Applicants with geopolitical expertise related to the regions/countries within Central/South America or the Middle East are particularly encouraged to apply.

Key responsibilities include teaching two courses per semester (including – with required qualification – the possibility of graduate-level teaching and mentoring), service on departmental and college committees and the active pursuit of a substantive research/creative agenda. As a department committed to the premise of integrated educational experiences including a study abroad component (embedded/summer programs) for students interested in international communication, the preferred candidate will bring an interest, fresh ideas, and an enterprising agenda for developing similar initiatives in his/her area of expertise on board. An earned Ph.D. in Mass Communication, Media Studies, or a related field is preferred, although ABD status will be considered.

The College of Communications at Penn State is home to four departments: Advertising/Public Relations; Film-Video and Media Studies; Journalism; and Telecommunications. In addition, the College offers a master’s degree program in media studies, and a Ph.D. program in mass communications. The University Park Campus is set in State College, a university town located in the heart of central Pennsylvania. State College offers a vibrant community with outstanding recreational and cultural activities, and excellent public schools. The campus is also within a half-day drive to Washington, DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City and Pittsburgh.

Penn State postdoc

The Institute for Information Policy at the College of Communications at The Pennsylvania State University is seeking a postdoctoral fellow. This is a one-year full time position beginning in July 2012, which may be renewed for an additional year.

The appointee will be expected to serve as managing editor of the Journal of Information Policy, an online academic journal (www.jip-online.co.il), support the work of the Institute in the ongoing managing of the journal and the research forum it is affiliated with, and to contribute to the ongoing work of the Institute. The appointee is also expected to participate in the preparation and presentation of research generated at the Institute, and author, co-author or collaborate on reports, conference papers, publications and other outputs. The appointee will be encouraged to further develop her or his own research agenda. An opportunity to teach in the College’s undergraduate program may also be available for additional compensation.

A Ph.D. in communications or a related field obtained by the time of appointment and a research focus in communication and information policy is required. A publication record in the field is an advantage.

The Institute for Information Policy (IIP), created in 1997 at the College of Communications, conducts sponsored research and self-funded programs on the social implications of information technology, with an emphasis on the potential of information technologies for improving democratic discourse, social responsibility, and quality of life.
