CMM/WFI/ISI Fellows program

APPLICATION DEADLINE UPCOMING: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2013

Applications are now being accepted for the 2013/2014 CMM/WFI/ISI FELLOWS PROGRAM. This unique fellowship program reflects a partnership among Villanova University’s Waterhouse Family Institute for the Study of Communication & Society, Fielding Graduate University, and the CMM Institute for Personal and Social Evolution.

Description: Communication is a generative force in the construction of social worlds. In the 21st Century these social worlds are increasingly created within a mediated landscape. These new media include a variety of digital platforms, experienced via a range of devices that offer on-demand access to content, interactive user feedback, creative participation, mobile community formation around specific content issues, and the real-time generation of new unregulated content. The new media, in fact, appear to offer it all and substantial claims have been made about their capacity to contribute to and enhance our contemporary social life.

In this year’s call for Fellows, we seek proposals that take a communication perspective and use the lens of CMM to further our understanding of lives lived in new media and, in particular, address the issue of how new media impacts our capacity to make and engage in social worlds.

Proposals that focus on any of the various types of new media are welcome. These new media can include web-hosted social sites like Facebook, mobile supported technology applications like twitter, or the range of different media hosted sites for citizen engagement and democratic participation activities.

We particularly encourage proposals that can demonstrate the practical import of a communication perspective and that enrich our understanding of the value of using CMM to understand the new media context and the types of social worlds these new media are helping to make and foster.

Application Process: Applications can be downloaded using the “Letter of Intent” form from the CMM Institute. Applications are due by Friday, November 1, 2013. Applicants will be notified the week of January 5, 2014.The three institutions will conduct a blind review process and select 3 Fellows for 2014. Each Fellow will receive a cash award of $2500.00 and will have your travel expenses to the 2014 Learning Exchange paid for.

If you are invited to become a CMM Fellow for 2014, you will be asked to present your work and engage participants in your topic area at the 2014 CMM Learning Exchange in October, 2014 (specific dates and location to be determined). The three partnering institutions will also post your work on our respective websites.

CASBS (Stanford) fellowships

The Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University invites applications for residential fellowships during the 2014-2015 academic year. This sabbatical fellowship provides an excellent opportunity for faculty to pursue priority research while engaging in a diverse, interdisciplinary intellectual community. We ask your help in identifying and encouraging applications from communication scholars. The Leonore Annenberg and Wallis Annenberg Fellowship in Communication was established at CASBS in 2004 to fund CASBS Fellows who

  • advance scholarship in the field of communication as it has emerged since the mid-20th century, and
  • are engaged with communication scholarship as their primary field.

We appreciate your assistance in ensuring that outstanding, innovative communication scholarship is a vital part of our multidisciplinary group of Fellows.

Studentship-intercultural and health

The development of intercultural competence among medical students

Project description: There is growing recognition of the need to develop intercultural competence among medical students, and this is reflected in the GMC’s Tomorrow’s Doctors 2009 and DoH’s the Race Equality Action 2004. But research suggests that intercultural training lacks coherence in UK medical schools, and the situation of international students is also a source of concern. Within this problem-space, this studentship addresses 3 questions at the interface of medical education and linguistic ethnography:

– what kinds of contribution to intercultural competence development derive from which settings, taking into account the full range of formal and informal contexts in which medical students participate?

– how far and in what ways are the intercultural learning needs of home and international students complementary or divergent?

– what are the implications for training?

Objectives for each year:
Year 1: a. review training frameworks and facilities available in UK medical schools; b. develop research skills c. design research tools year
Year 2: a. conduct ethnographic investigation with medical students at KCL
Year 3: a. analysis data; b. consider publications in journals and conferences
Year 4: write up and disseminate results.

The studentship will draw on training provided both by the Centre for Language Discourse & Communication and the College’s ESRC Doctoral Training Centre, and it will be affiliated to the DTC’s Education, Mind and Society Theme.

History of Technology Fellowship

The Karen Johnson Freeze Fellowship Fund invites young and early career scholars in the field of history of technology in Central, Southeastern, and Eastern Europe to apply for funding. The fund is an initiative of the Foundation for the History of Technology (SHT) and the Society for the History of Technology (SHOT).

The Karen Johnson Freeze Fellowship Fund seeks to encourage scientific research and facilitate active participation of early career scholars in Central, Southeastern, and Eastern Europe, in particular in Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, the Ukraine, and Turkey.

The fund was established in memory of Karen Johnson Freeze, who broadened the perspective of the history of technology through the inclusion of Eastern, Central, and South Eastern Europe. She was responsible for the early contacts with young scholars in the region and pointed out existing preconceptions and biases, while bridging the scholarly divisions created as a result of Cold War politics. Through her efforts, the history of technology has begun to develop as a field in Central and Eastern Europe. Within Society for the History of Technology (SHOT), she served as a very active chair of the International Outreach Committee.

Who Should Apply? The Karen Johnson Freeze Fellowship Fund supports early career scholars preferably working in Central, Southeastern, and Eastern Europe in their pursuit of either pre- or postdoctoral research in the field of history of technology. The award may be used for travel and/or small stipends to provide a basic income for a few months. Through the fund, early career scholars will be allowed to attend international conferences or visit distant archives.

Application Deadline: Two fellowships will be awarded annually. The next application deadline is July 31, 2012. The 2012 fellows will be announced during the Tensions of Europe / SHOT meeting in Copenhagen, October 3-7, 2012.

Selection Committee: Fellows are selected by a committee consisting of Prof. Dr. Luda Klusakova (Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic), Prof.Dr. Ruth Oldenziel (Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands), Dr. Dobrinka Parusheva (University of Plovdiv, Bulgaria) and Prof. Dr. Steve Usselman (Georgia Institute of Technology, USA).

What are the conditions? A Karen Johnson Freeze Fellow will be granted an award of a maximum of €2,000.–. The expenses will be paid directly to the fellow after submission of a statement of expenses and the original receipts. In emergency cases, an advance payment may be available. Expenses are refunded in accordance with the regulations of the Foundation for the History of Technology.

Fellows are required to publish a report/article in the Tensions of Europe Newsletter and the SHOT Newsletter. Additionally, the Fellows will be offered the opportunity to publish their report in the Tensions of Europe Working Paper series.

Human Rights fellowship

Vacancy: E.MA Fellow 2012/2013
The European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratisation (EIUC) is looking to appoint a highly qualified individual specialised in International Human Rights Law as E.MA Fellow for the 2012/2013 academic year in Venice-Lido, Italy.

The position involves a combination of academic and administrative responsibilities connected with the E.MA Programme. This is an exciting opportunity for a committed young scholar willing to actively participate in a unique Master’s programme, to advice our postgraduate students, to liaise with a prestigious faculty and to support our dedication to human rights and democratisation.

The assignment is for an initial period of six months, from 27 August 2012 to 31 January 2013, with the possibility of renewal subject to performance and funding.

Visiting fellows-Portugal

FLAD VISITING FELLOWS IN-KIND GRANT PROGRAM 2012/2013

The Luso-American Development Foundation (Fundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento – FLAD) is opening its facilities to host up to eight fellows per semester. Eligibility is limited to professors and researchers from U.S. universities and research institutions. Candidates may apply for one semester or one academic year.

FLAD Visiting Fellows are expected to be in residence at the Foundation’s headquarters while developing a research project that is compatible with FLAD’s mission and priority areas.

Visiting fellows will be provided with office space, free internet access, limited printing, photocopy, phone (domestic calls) and mailing privileges, and other resources, adjusted on a case-by-case basis.

FLAD will contribute with its best efforts to provide a network of suitable contacts in desired research areas, setting up meetings and site visits when possible. FLAD Fellows may also participate in FLAD’s events, and collaborate on designing new projects and research engagements. These are special ‘program-launching’ conditions, and may be adjusted for competitions in subsequent academic years.

We are especially interested in hosting individuals who have a track-record of distinguished scholarship, success in securing external support for their research, and collaborate across disciplinary boundaries. We welcome requests from individuals who are looking for a collaborative research environment to spend their sabbatical.

APPLICATION PROCESS
To apply, candidates should use FLAD’s online application system to submit the following materials:
– Curriculum vitae;
– Statement of purpose, including an explanation of their research project, an outline of additional activities they would like to be involved in while in Portugal, and a list of funding sources (e.g. grants, gifts, contracts, salary) for their stay in Portugal;
– Letter(s) of support from Portuguese institution(s) (optional);
– Two reference letters.

Preference will be given to candidates showing evidence (letter of support) of having links to Portuguese universities and research institutions.

APPLICATION AND ANNOUNCEMENT DEADLINES FOR AY 2012/1013:– Applications for the fall 2012 semester (August-December) must be submitted by May 31, 2012;
– Applications for the spring 2013 semester (January-June) must be submitted by September 1, 2012.
Decisions regarding the selection of FLAD Visiting Fellows are made four weeks after the application deadline.

Upon acceptance of the fellowship, selected candidates are requested to submit a USD $100 deposit fee, refundable after their arrival in Portugal, to guarantee the office space and additional logistics involved.

Annenberg-Oxford Media Policy Summer Institute

Call for Applications: 2012 Annenberg-Oxford Media Policy Summer Institute

The Center for Global Communication Studies at the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania and the Programme of Communication Law and Policy at the University of Oxford (PCMLP) are pleased to announce that we are currently accepting applications for the 14th annual Media Policy Summer School, to be held from June 18 – 29, 2012 at the University of Oxford.

The annual summer institute brings together young scholars and regulators to discuss important recent trends in technology, international politics and development and its influence on media policy. Participants come from around the world; countries represented at previous summer institutes include Thailand, Kenya, China, Brazil, Egypt, Nigeria, Jordan, Italy and Bosnia, among others.

This year the summer institute seeks, as part of the cohort, researchers and academics (PhD candidates and early career academics, for example), who will come with a research project related to the general subject of the seminar. Research generally related to the work of the Center for Global Communication Studies and the Programme for Comparative Media Law and Policy is especially welcome, and some participants will be asked to present their research. Applications are also welcome from those working as lawyers and those employed by NGOs, government bodies, and regulatory agencies.

The seminars this year will focus on several key areas, including media governance in India and China and strategic communication in conflict and post-conflict and transitional environments, particularly in the Middle East and Africa. At the same time, the successful curriculum that has been the foundation of the program over the years will continue, with sessions covering global media policy issues such as media and economic/social development, freedom of information, internet regulation and convergence. Part of the course will be devoted to new developments in comparative approaches to regulation, looking at Ofcom in the UK and other agencies, including examples from the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

The seminar brings together a wide range of participants from around the globe and provides them with an environment in which significant policy issues are seriously discussed. The richness of the experience comes from exposure to a variety of speakers and from the discussions among participants themselves.

This year, Internews Network will again be offering twelve Media Policy Fellowships that cover tuition, housing, travel, and per diem for exceptional applicants who are engaged in research on media advocacy, reform, and implementation in post-conflict societies.
