CASE STUDIES IN INTERCULTURAL DIALOGUE

We invite submissions for an edited volume on the topic of intercultural dialogue contracted with Kendall Hunt Publishing Company. The growing interest to the concept of intercultural dialogue highlights recognition of the intercultural character of all dialogue processes as they are embedded in and transcend national, political, economic, cultural, religious and historical contexts. It also acknowledges how closely normative assumptions about dialogue are implicated in intercultural communication practices.

The volume aims to make a contribution to the field through the diversity of conceptual and methodological approaches, inclusion of various cultures, contexts and examples, and through the contribution of a diverse number of authors. It draws on cases of intercultural communication in which there is dialogue, conflict or misunderstanding, and presents approaches, theories, and analytical tools that can be used to productively understand and/or resolve the issues presented in the particular examples. The collection approaches case studies as both a way to theorize intercultural dialogue, and as a teaching/learning tool. By defining the concept of “case” more broadly as a real life situation—from a well-defined situation taking place at a certain time and place (e.g. conversations, meetings, classroom settings) to series of events, forms of representation, or organizational structures—the collection aims to cover a range of examples from different cultural contexts. The case studies are structured around the idea that intercultural dialogue is an important component of everyday life, and which is practiced at various levels—from interpersonal communication to media, education, business settings, legal work, action in civil society, and national policy construction, etc. The cases are expected to demonstrate the complexity in the dynamics of intercultural communication, culture, everyday, and identity, and emphasize the building of dialogue at individual, interpersonal, group, and institutional levels. Submissions may address a broad range of issues, including class struggles, international journalism, artistic expressions, interpersonal and workplace conflict, media, education, migration, new media technologies, NGOs working on conflict resolution or in conflict-torn areas, popular culture, race and ethnicity, sexuality, religious diversity, social movements, transnational feminist practices, youth cultures, and war.

Communication Studies

The Communication Department currently offers broad-based curricula leading to BA, MA and PhD degrees. Current faculty work in areas as diverse as Journalism, Public Relations, Advertising, Mass Communication, New Media, Media and Cultural Studies, International and Intercultural Communication, and Media Production with emphases in quantitative, qualitative and critical approaches. FSH hopes to appoint a Department Head who can both contribute to and complement existing departmental emphases. The post is open to applicants from any area of Communication Studies. We are especially interested in candidates whose academic expertise or research programme is relevant to the concerns of Macau, the Greater China region and/or Southeast Asia.

Qualifications
Candidates should possess a PhD, a record of outstanding teaching, an international research reputation with a strong publication record in international journals, experience working with graduate students and experience in curriculum design. The candidate should also possess excellent organizational qualities, communication skills, leadership ability and experience in administrative posts. The successful candidate will be appointed as Head of the Department. Candidates must be fluent in English and able to lecture and publish research in English. Ability to speak Chinese (Putonghua or Cantonese) may be an asset, but is not necessary for the appointment.

Selected candidate may assume duty as early as January 2012. Later dates of appointment are also possible.

Position and Remuneration
Remuneration and appointment rank offered will be competitive and commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification, current position and professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12%, while after various discretionary exemptions the effective income tax rate has been around 5% – 7%.

This is the third in a series of hires to establish a new Communication Department and major within the College of Liberal Arts (CLA).

Candidates should possess an earned PhD in Communication, a quantitative social science research program, and the potential for obtaining external funding. Possible areas of research interest include diversity in the workplace, communication and social mobilization, compliance gaining and social influence in organizational contexts, international media systems, globalization, political communication, crosscultural media effects, and others.  Opportunities for interdisciplinary research collaboration may exist between this position and the CLA Departments of Psychology or Sociology, McCormack Graduate School of Public Policy, and/or College of Nursing and Health Sciences, depending on areas of research expertise and interest.

The successful candidate is expected to develop and teach required courses in the new major, along with courses in Organizational or Intercultural Communication and other courses in his/her area of expertise. Teaching load is a 3/3, though new faculty are typically granted a number of course releases during their pre-tenure years.

The world is experiencing new forms of conflict post 9/11. Some of these are overt military actions and some of them are covert statements of protest. Many of these conflicts arise from cross-cultural tensions, cross-border political goals and tensions arising from multi-ethnic, multi-religious populations. To date, neither mainstream media nor scholarly debate has successfully addressed the issue of how modern conflicts affect intercultural communication both at the theoretical level as well as at the level of specific case studies. In order to curb the flaring up of conflicts or for conflicts to come to sustainable, creative endings, it is important to bring to public attention the key uses and contributions of intercultural communication. In this context, this special issue seeks manuscripts that explore the intersection of intercultural communication, peace research and public activism. The rapid increase of communication technologies has made trans-border understanding and communication more viable today. The special issue, thus, also reflects on the effect of communication technology on intercultural communication in stimulating lasting peace. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: • contribution of intercultural communication to international understanding, peace and security • use of new media/technologies to communicate across cultures in times of conflict • influence of media representation of conflicts on intercultural communication • intercultural communication and cyberactivism • development of normative theories in intercultural communication and peace studies in conditions of cultural pluralism in conflict-affected areas of the world • influence of social media on intercultural communication in times of conflict • elements of intercultural communication in peace journalism • the role of intercultural communication in world politics. Differing methodological perspectives are welcome.

Position: The Department of Communication Studies at the University of North Texas invites applications for a position beginning fall 2012 at the advanced Assistant (tenure-track) or Associate (tenured) level in New/Social/Digital Media with a specialization in social scientific approaches to Organizational, Interpersonal, Intercultural, Health or another related communication area.

Qualifications: All applicants must meet the following criteria: (1) A Ph.D. in Communication Studies or a closely related discipline at the time of appointment, (2) documented experience teaching courses in new/social/digital media, and (3) a record of research or publications focusing on new/social/digital media. Univ San Ignacio, Peru

We at the Center for American Education and the Department of Communications at the Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola in Lima, Peru are looking to expand our North American degree offerings. We are currently accepting proposals for partnering institutions for our dual degree program in Communication Studies or Mass Communications.

Currently, we have an agreement with the University of South Florida to offer both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Business Administration (they are ranked among the top 25 public universities in the US in this field), and have recently concluded an agreement with the University of Houston (ranked among the top 5 in this discipline) to offer a BS in Hotel Management.

This partnership essentially provides an international annex campus for a state university in the US and allows us to extend our presence in the English-language world of Peruvian education. We pay a fee to the university based upon the number of students in the cohort. Our students leave with degrees from both USIL and the partnering institution. All faculty members of the programs we currently offer are SACS and AACSB-accredited in their respective disciplines.  Additionally, our US-based partner institutions have the opportunity to send faculty to our campus at regular intervals to teach the courses in their specialization.

The School of Journalism and the Department of Communication in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences (CAS) at Michigan State University (MSU) seek a tenure track Assistant or Associate Professor in the areas of health, environment, science, and risk communication.

The successful candidate will conduct research about risk communication related to health, science, and the environment.  Candidates could have expertise in areas such as: environmental journalism; health communication, science communication, crisis communication; international and intercultural communication of risks; public participation and advocacy; risk decision-making; policy and risks; or social influence and persuasion.  The successful candidate would work with interdisciplinary teams to seek research funding from government agencies and private foundations.

This position is jointly appointed between Journalism and Communication and housed in the School of Journalism. The split of duties will depend on the expertise of the person hired, but the person will be expected to teach courses in both units.  The candidate would be expected to work with faculty in the Knight Center for Environmental Journalism, the CAS Health & Risk Communication Center and other units at MSU. The candidate should have a Ph.D. in Journalism, Communication, Mass Communication, or a related field. Experience in funded research is desirable.
