The UNESCO Chair on Intercultural Competences hosted by Stellenbosch University is pleased to announce a monthly webinar series on “African Perspectives on Intercultural Competence.”

The May monthly webinar will be held on 22 May 2025, 15:00 Central African Time (CAT): “Fostering Intercultural Competencies Through Culture and Arts Education in Africa” presented by Chief Moomen (Ghana), Poet, playwright and creative producer; and Jill Pribyl (Uganda), UNESCO Chair of Dance for Global Citizenship Education. Call for proposals: Collection Bibliothèque allemande, Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme, Paris, France. Deadline: 31 May 2025.

To foster intellectual exchange between France and German-speaking countries, the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme, supported by the Goethe-Institut Paris, the German Academic Exchange Service, and the Centre Georg Simmel – Franco-German Research in the Social Sciences, in collaboration with the École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris, promotes the translation of significant German-language contributions in the humanities and social sciences into French.

The « Bibliothèque allemande » collection, published by the Éditions de la MSH rcompiles key texts from the humanities and social sciences that have made fundamental contributions to academic discourse in their respective fields. The translation program aims to make important scholarly works from German-speaking countries accessible to a French-speaking audience.

The program seeks monographs (up to 800,000 characters) that have had a significant impact on intellectual thought and academic debate in German-speaking countries in recent years or offer innovative and original responses to current issues. The works should appeal to a broad, intellectually curious readership; purely qualification-based works (such as PhD theses) are excluded.

The first International Conference on Globalisation/Deglobalisation in Languages, Education, Culture and Communication (GLECC2025) is going to be held 30-31 July, 2025, Manchester, UK., with pre-conference workshops on 29th July and post-conference cultural visits on 1st August.

The past two decades have witnessed remarkable advancements in the studies into Education, Second and Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting, Cultural Studies, and Communication. This growth, evident in both the number of active researchers and the volume of scholarly throughput and outcomes, can be largely attributed to the forces of globalisation. Consequently, adopting the globalisation perspective is timely and provides a natural framework for connecting these diverse yet interlinked disciplines.

GLECC2025 aims to bring together researchers, educators, practitioners, and policymakers from the realms of education, foreign and second languages, cultural studies, translation, interpreting, and communication to disseminate research outcomes, share insights, discuss findings, exchange visions, and identify challenges and trends in an interactive and immersive multidisciplinary environment.

As always, if there is a concept you think should be written up as one of the Key Concepts, whether in English or any other language, propose it. If you are new to CID, please provide a brief resume. This opportunity is open to masters students and above, on the assumption that some familiarity with academic conventions generally, and discussion of intercultural dialogue specifically, are useful.

New ICA Journal: Global Perspectives in Communication

New open-access journal just established: Global Perspectives in Communication.

The International Communication Association (ICA) is pleased to announce the launch of its new open-access journal, Global Perspectives in Communication (GPC). The journal is dedicated to fostering diverse perspectives, fresh insights, and open-ended inquiries that drive communication research forward. GPC’s streamlined, high-quality peer-review process will ensure the rapid publication of scientifically rigorous research across all areas of communication.

GPC will encompass a broad range of topics, including but not limited to: Communication and media studies; Interpersonal and intercultural communication; Organizational communication; Political communication; Health communication; Environmental communication; Science communication; Digital, AI, and social media communication; Human-computer communication; Journalism and mass communication; Advertising and public relations; Media and communication history; Information science and cybernetics; Popular culture; Visual communication.

Under the leadership of inaugural editor Nick Bowman (Syracuse U), GPC will welcome various submission formats, including traditional manuscripts, short papers, essays, position papers, registered reports, review articles, and book reviews. The journal also encourages diverse methodological approaches, including quantitative, qualitative, digital, and mixed-methods research. Additionally, GPC seeks to explore emerging research formats and media, such as video and audio recordings.

GPC is set to begin accepting submissions in the lead-up to ICA’s 75th Anniversary at ICA25 in Denver, and is actively recruiting for reviewers. If you are interested, please email the editor.

Open Access and Funding Model: To promote inclusivity and accessibility, GPC will waive the Article Processing Charge (APC) for unfunded articles. Articles with allocated funding-whether through a transformative deal or other means-will carry an APC. Additionally, articles from researchers in developing countries recognized by Research4Life (Tier 3) will have their APCs waived in alignment with ICA’s partnership through Oxford University Press (OUP). Authors may publish under a CC-BY or CC-BY-NC-ND license.

University of Hong Kong Global South Fellowship 2025

Launched in 2025 by the Faculty of Social Sciences at The University of Hong Kong (HKU), the HKU Social Sciences Global South Fellowship Scheme is designed to foster vibrant knowledge exchange and collaboration among scholars and researchers from the Global South, enhancing the Faculty’s global academic impact. Fellows will have the opportunity to visit HKU’s Faculty of Social Sciences and engage in knowledge-sharing activities, promoting cross-cultural learning and partnerships. Apply now for visits during the upcoming fall semester (September 2025 to January 2026).

Eligibility: Open to professoriate-level scholars affiliated with universities or comparable institutions in the Global South region.

Duration and Timing: Fellowships last one to three months, during either the fall semester (September to January) or the spring semester (February to June). The deadline for the spring semester will be at the end of November.

The German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) / Leibniz-Institut für Globale und Regionale Studien is an independent social science research institute based in Hamburg. It analyses political, social, and economic developments in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, and links this knowledge to questions of global significance. It combines region-specific analysis with innovative comparative research on accountability and participation, peace and security, globalisation and development, and global orders and foreign policies. The GIGA seeks to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (M/F/D) in Comparative Politics With a Focus on Sub-Saharan Africa.

Applications are invited for a full-time position, with an initial contract of three years and the possibility of another three years after successful evaluation and depending on the availability of funds. The successful applicant should start as soon as possible. The successful candidate will work on key questions and challenges in comparative politics with a focus on sub-Saharan Africa. Potential research areas include but are not limited to autocratisation and democratisation, domestic politics and/or institutions, external actors, comparative political economy, the comparative study of conflicts, questions of misinformation or repression, and the political challenges arising from digitalisation. They expect the candidate to outline a corresponding research agenda.
