Europe-China Dialogue: Media and Communication Studies Summer School (Switzerland)

Europe-China Dialogue: Media and Communication Studies Summer School 2016
Lugano, Switzerland (July 4-10, 2016)

After the successful experience in 2014 and 2015, China Media Observatory of Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI) in cooperation with School of Journalism and Communication of Peking University, will operate the THIRD edition of Europe-China Dialogue: Media and Communication Studies Summer School from July 4 through July 10, 2016. For the first time, this summer school will be hosted in Europe (the first two were in China). In 2016 we will convene in Lugano, a beautiful city located in the Italian speaking region of Switzerland.

The program is open to the full variety of academic work from the field of communication and media studies for young scholars, PhD students, and master students who have strong academic interests. The summer school should especially interest scholars with a background in international communication studies, intercultural communication studies, Chinese/European media studies and culture/language studies. It aims to bring together researchers from Europe, China, the United States and other countries or regions in order to debate contemporary issues in media, communication, political economy and cultural studies in the background of a new world power structure in the making.

Inspired by the ECREA Doctoral Summer School, this summer school will bring together highly qualified and well-respected professors from Europe, China and the United States. These scholars will present and discuss their recent research and engage participants in a highly supportive international setting where young scholars can also present their own ongoing work, receive feedback on their current or future research projects from international experts, and meet students and academics from other countries, establishing valuable contacts for the future.

Course description
Urban sustainable development requires enhancing urban resilience. In this Summer School, we look at resilience as a space for translocal bottom-up learning, emerging artistic-cultural-ecological approaches or as a ‘Space of Possibilities’. Resilience for us is openness, possibility, emergence, creation, non-structuration, art, praxis, mutual learning and doing . . . It is not a 10-point governmental program to be implemented (e.g., early warning, knowledge transfer, etc.).

Several key characteristics of resilience (redundancy, diversity, learning modes, and self-organization) can potentially be fostered in urban neighborhoods through creative practices entangling natural and cultural resources and processes such as “ecological art” and “social practice” interventions, “urban gardening” projects, autonomous social-cultural centers fighting against gentrification, and artivist actions that question unsustainable city planning and societal behaviours. However, how far does the potential of such practices reach? When and how do they scale up to wider urban institutions as drivers of transformations, fostering systemic innovations? What limits and challenges do they encounter? How far do they foster urban resilience towards sustainability as a transformative search process of fundamental change, or are they coopted into neoliberal urban development? What recurrent processes and structures can be observed across different contexts? And how can we learn from these in order to support transformative processes?

The summer school, conceived as an extended workshop, will explore comparative insights across different urban initiatives and projects. We invite researchers, artists, and practitioners to address together several sets of questions and reflect on their empirical research, previous project experiences, and expertise from different cities. Insights emerging from the workshop will inform, and be informed by, the ongoing international comparative research project/network “Culturizing Sustainable Cities: Catalyzing translocal learning and advancement of emerging artistic-cultural environmental approaches”, initiated by the Center for Social Studies at the University of Coimbra, Portugal, and the transdisciplinary research project “The City as Space of Possibility” at Leuphana University Lüneburg, Germany. In addition, insights from the summer school will be disseminated through Cultura21, an international network of cultural practitioners, researchers, and others (e.g., cultural policymakers) who are focused on advancing cultures of sustainability.

Global Governance Summer School (Belgium)

For students and practitioners everywhere, the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies (University of Leuven) and the Dean Rusk International Law Center (University of Georgia School of Law) are delighted to announce a new opportunity to study international law and global governance. Applications are welcome for a brand-new Global Governance Summer School, spanning 3 weeks at the centuries-old University of Leuven, located in a beautiful city a short train ride from Brussels and easily accessible to many European capitals. Students in law and related disciplines, from the United States, Europe, and across the globe, are welcome to enroll. All students will receive a certificate, and U.S. law students also may earn 4 American Bar Association-approved credits.

Through lectures, discussions, and group research projects, students will explore global governance – how state, regional, and international legal regimes, plus individuals, corporations, intergovernmental and nongovernmental organizations, networks, and other nonstate actors, interact. A range of global challenges will be discussed, such as trade and sustainable development, peace and security, trafficking and other crimes, intellectual property, the environment, human rights and the rule of law, and migration.

Four cutting-edge, English-language courses will be given. In addition, the summer course offers field trips to European and international institutions in Brussels and Luxembourg and an expert conference on global governance in Brussels. The summer school aims to bring together students from all over the world and different disciplines fostering interdisciplinary and intercultural dialogue.

This summer school is intended for:

• Practitioners and policy experts from the international policy community who want to update their knowledge on current developments in global governance and international law

Health Systems Through Conflict and Recovery (Italy)

HEALTH SYSTEMS THROUGH CONFLICT AND RECOVERY

Background and nature of the course
The volatility and complexity of conflict and post-conflict scenarios pose unprecedented challenges to health workers – both national and international – who are called to rehabilitate the physical and human health infrastructures. Lack of properly prepared professionals in this field has often resulted in reconstruction efforts characterized by weak analysis, little understanding, inadequate planning and poor implementation.

This Training Course intends to fill this gap as it aims to:
Introduce participants to the main features of conflict-ridden environments;
Identify and discuss the main features of health systems during protracted crises and recovery processes, and the most common distortions plaguing healthcare provision.
Analyse and reflect upon the challenges faced by health actors in countries affected or recovering from a conflict;
Introduce participants to recovery processes, to the dangers they pose and to the opportunities they provide for correcting long-standing distortions and creating more efficient and fair health systems;
Familiarize participants with the existing literature in this field and stimulate their interest in conducting further research.

Methodology
The Course is taught in English. It is intensive in nature and demands from participants a pro-active attitude. Interaction with the trainers is encouraged through the use of case studies and practical exercises. Ample space is devoted to testimonies and reflections drawn from the personal experience of trainers and trainees. Participants will conduct an in-depth analysis of a distressed healthcare arena through the study of selected documents and group work. The study materials revolve around a variety of troubled countries, which include Afghanistan, Angola, Cambodia, Central African Republic, DR Congo, Haiti, Iraq, Lebanon, Liberia, Myanmar, Palestine, Somalia, the Former Soviet Union, South Sudan, Timor Leste, Yemen. An exploration of the existing literature will complement each training session. Participants will receive a rich portfolio of key selected documents.

Who can apply
The Course focuses on health issues, but it is open to professionals from other disciplines. Applicants must have a university degree or the equivalent of 3 years of relevant working experience. They must have a sound working knowledge of English.

Accepted applicants will be informed within two weeks from the moment of the submission of their application. We are happy to invite you to participate in the ECREA European Media and Communication Doctoral Summer School 2016 that will take place at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan, Italy, from July 25 to August 5, 2016.

THE FOCUS
The ECREA European Media and Communication Doctoral Summer School 2016 brings together members of the European research community in order to debate contemporary issues in media, communication and cultural studies. The main emphasis of this summer school is not on a particular theme, but on providing structural and individuated PhD-support for young European scholars, through a variety of working forms, including feedback seminars, workshops, and lectures. The summer school aims to provide a supportive international setting where doctoral students can present their ongoing work, receive feedback on their PhD-projects from international experts and meet students and academics from other countries, establishing valuable contacts for the future.

HOW TO APPLY
There are two options to attend the Summer School:

For students whose universities are members of the organizing consortium the summer school will provide:
– free accommodation for the whole duration of the summer school, including breakfast
– free Welcome and Farewell Dinner
– free WiFi at the summer school venue
– free summer school materials (including 2 books)
– free coffee during the breaks
– free lunch from Mondays to Fridays
– travel expenses (between 0 and 1999 KM: maximum 275 EUR per participant; 2000 and more KM: maximum 360 EUR per participant)

Payment of a registration fee of 560 Euros is required for consortium participants.

For students whose universities are not a member of the organizing consortium, the summer school will provide:

CREDITS
The Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (Faculty of Political and Social Sciences) acknowledges the Summer School activities with 10 ECTS for the participation in the full programme (including the supplementary activities). Furthermore, six of the best student presentations and all abstracts of student projects will be published in the Summer School Book.

DEADLINE
The deadline for applications for the summer school is March 15, 2016. Applicants from consortium universities and from affiliated partners of the summer school must coordinate their application with their institutional coordinators. All applicants will be informed about the selection of participants in early April.

The working language of the summer school will be English; therefore, a sufficient understanding and ability to express oneself in this language is required.

Study International Communication in England, Summer 2016

Are you a graduate or upper-level undergraduate student in communication looking to earn 3 credits for a 12-day study abroad experience in England for Summer 2016?

Then please consider CCOM 7070 International Corporate Communication and Culture offered at Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Wroxton College located in Oxfordshire, England, from May 29 – June 10, 2016.

The course consists of invited speakers, case studies, site visits, and trips to London, Stratford-upon-Avon, and Oxford. The main objective of the course is make students familiar with the cultural, historical, and political contexts in which international business transactions take place. Students will also attend a day of seminars at the Harris-Manchester College of Oxford University ending with High Dinner with the Oxford students.

Wroxton College is the British campus of Fairleigh Dickinson University, situated in the ancestral home of Lord North in Oxfordshire. The main College building is Wroxton Abbey, a fully modernized Jacobean mansion on 56 acres of its own lawns, lakes and woodlands. Originally constructed as an Augustinian priory in 1215, Wroxton Abbey has accommodated several British monarchs and statespeople such as Theodore Roosevelt. It now houses the College’s classrooms and seminar rooms, the library, fully modernized student lodging facilities, and computer laboratories.

At Fairleigh Dickinson University, participating students are drawn from the MA in Corporate and Organizational Communication, the MA in Organizational Behavior, and selected upper-level undergraduate students.

Study in Ghana: Information & Communication Technologies

Study information and communication technologies in Ghana this summer

Applications are open for the study-abroad seminar: “Experience Research: Communication Technologies and Development in Southern Ghana.” If you’ve ever wondered whether information and communication technologies (ICTs) are really changing lives in African countries, this is an opportunity to find out for yourself. Design and carry out a research project to answer questions you have about the role of ICTs in socio-economic development. You do not need to have research experience, and we welcome both graduate and undergraduate students.

The program will be 4 weeks long and takes place from August 26 – September 25, 2016. The course may satisfy research methods or international development requirements for some departments. Currently at the University of Washington it satisfies the research methods requirement for Informatics students (INFO 470) and qualifies as an elective for the International Development Certificate Program (IDCP). We are happy to work with you and your advisor to determine if the program could satisfy requirements for other courses.
