Call for Applications: 2012 Annenberg-Oxford Media Policy Summer Institute

The Center for Global Communication Studies at the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania and the Programme of Communication Law and Policy at the University of Oxford (PCMLP) are pleased to announce that we are currently accepting applications for the 14th annual Media Policy Summer School, to be held from June 18 – 29, 2012 at the University of Oxford.

The annual summer institute brings together young scholars and regulators to discuss important recent trends in technology, international politics and development and its influence on media policy. Participants come from around the world; countries represented at previous summer institutes include Thailand, Kenya, China, Brazil, Egypt, Nigeria, Jordan, Italy and Bosnia, among others.

This year the summer institute seeks, as part of the cohort, researchers and academics (PhD candidates and early career academics, for example), who will come with a research project related to the general subject of the seminar. Research generally related to the work of the Center for Global Communication Studies and the Programme for Comparative Media Law and Policy is especially welcome, and some participants will be asked to present their research. Applications are also welcome from those working as lawyers and those employed by NGOs, government bodies, and regulatory agencies.

The seminars this year will focus on several key areas, including media governance in India and China and strategic communication in conflict and post-conflict and transitional environments, particularly in the Middle East and Africa. At the same time, the successful curriculum that has been the foundation of the program over the years will continue, with sessions covering global media policy issues such as media and economic/social development, freedom of information, internet regulation and convergence. Part of the course will be devoted to new developments in comparative approaches to regulation, looking at Ofcom in the UK and other agencies, including examples from the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

The seminar brings together a wide range of participants from around the globe and provides them with an environment in which significant policy issues are seriously discussed. The richness of the experience comes from exposure to a variety of speakers and from the discussions among participants themselves.

This year, Internews Network will again be offering twelve Media Policy Fellowships that cover tuition, housing, travel, and per diem for exceptional applicants who are engaged in research on media advocacy, reform, and implementation in post-conflict societies. Fairleigh Dickinson Study Abroad in England

Are you a graduate student in communication looking to earn 3 credits for a 12-day study abroad experience in England for Summer 2012?

Then please consider CCOM 7070 International Corporate Communication and Culture offered at Fairleigh Dickinson University‘s Wroxton College located in Oxfordshire, England, from May 21 – June 2, 2012.

The course consists of invited speakers, case studies, site visits, and trips to London, Stratford-upon-Avon, and Oxford. The main objective of the course is make students familiar with the cultural, historical, and political contexts in which international business transactions take place. Students will have two full-day opportunities to work with students from the MA in Corporate Communication offered by the University of West London. Students will also attend a day of seminars at the Harris-Manchester College of Oxford University ending with High Dinner with the Oxford students.

Wroxton College is the British campus of Fairleigh Dickinson University, situated in the ancestral home of Lord North in Oxfordshire. The main College building is Wroxton Abbey, a fully modernized Jacobean mansion on 56 acres of its own lawns, lakes and woodlands. Originally constructed as an Augustinian priory in 1215, Wroxton Abbey has accommodated several British monarchs and statespeople such as Theodore Roosevelt. It now houses the College’s classrooms and seminar rooms, the library, fully modernized student lodging facilities, and computer laboratories.

At Fairleigh Dickinson University, participating students are drawn from the MA in Corporate and Organizational Communication and the MA in Organizational Behavior.Students from other universities and colleges are warmly invited to register with permission of the course leader, Gary Radford.

The Institute for Cultural Diplomacy and Dubrovnik International University (DIU) are pleased to announce the graduate Master of Arts program in International Relations and Cultural Diplomacy. Offered by DIU in partnership with the ICD, the program will combine the traditional academic components of international relations with a new focus on the role of soft power and cultural diplomacy in contemporary global affairs.

The Degree
While the study of political science has been a cherished tradition of academia, the developments outlined above demand the identification of entirely new theories and models. An understanding of the challenges faced by the contemporary world requires an interdisciplinary approach; International Relations and Diplomacy should not be understood only as disciplines of Political Science or Political Theory, but also be interpreted from the perspective of art and culture, economics, law, and other social sciences.

The Online Degree
In order to provide access to this MA degree to those applicants who are not able to travel to Berlin and Dubrovnik for the MA degree (such as professionals or diplomats with full time jobs) we have developed  an online version of the MA in International Relations and Cultural Diplomacy. This degree would follow the same structure and curriculum of the on-site Masters Degree offered through the two institutions; however would be completely administered online and offered to those who could not physically come to Berlin or Dubrovnik. Admissions
DIU and the ICD do not consider any one element of an application exclusively. Rather, our admissions panel considers academic achievement as well as personal qualities such as strength of character, motivation and the ability and willingness to take on new academic challenges. Additional factors, such as essays, letters of recommendation, and interviews are also a vital part of the admissions process. MA programme in Cultural Policy and Management
Interculturalism and Mediation in the Balkans

The University of Arts in Belgrade, Serbia, in cooperation with the University Lyon 2, France is organizing a joint MA programme in Cultural Policy and Management (Interculturalism and Mediation in the Balkans). This MA programme, taught in English and French, has gained an international reputation. Accredited by the University Lyon 2 and supported by other partner universities, professional organizations and guest experts from all over Europe, it attracts not only students from the Balkan region but also those coming from Europe and worldwide, who seek a new, stimulating and different study environment.

This programme enables students to be part of a creative capital and multicultural landscape of the Balkans. For its excellence in the promotion of intercultural cooperation and mediating capacities of culture, the MA in Cultural Policy and Management has been named UNESCO Chair in 2004.

The Leibniz Graduate School for Knowledge Media Research and the ScienceCampus Tübingen are pleased to announce their first joint Summer School for talented junior researchers. The Summer School addresses empirically oriented psychologists and social scientists dealing with questions in the field of Web 2.0 and social media. It presents a unique opportunity for young researchers to meet fellow researchers and learn from outstanding scientific leaders by developing new research ideas. Across three parallel workshop tracks (about 10 participants each), the Summer School »Making sense of social media« provides the framework to discuss recent developments from a scientific point of view, share ideas and gain insights into how we as a research community can make sense of social media.

Learning about Others – Interpersonal Relationships
Social networking sites have become the most popular form of social media. They offer potentials to maintain, extend and manage interpersonal relationships both in private and professional life. Social networks and communities rely on users’ willingness to learn about the activities and interests of others, and by keeping others informed about one’s own offline and online life. The management of interpersonal relationships touches issues such as social identity, strong and weak social ties, and mutual trust. This workshop investigates processes that foster or inhibit the management of interpersonal relationships in social networks. The aim of the workshop is to build the ground for theory-driven development of design principles for online communities.


Track II
Learning from Others – Social Navigation
Users can be easily overwhelmed by the amount of available information in the Web. Therefore, some forms of social media are geared at helping users in finding their way. Social navigation is a principle to address this issue, and it rests on collaborative principles: many users leave information signposts (e.g. via ratings, profiles, and behavioral data), thereby collectively making other users aware of valuable pieces of information. Typical applications that harness the power of the collective through social navigation are recommender systems, awareness tools, and voting systems. They have an impact both on information selection as well as processing of information. This workshop addresses psychological and technological principles that make social navigation click.

Learning with Others – Knowledge Building
The concept of social media is currently spreading in the areas of learning and education. In accordance to constructivist learning principles, Web 2.0 users now actively build rather than just acquire knowledge and information. Knowledge building constitutes a form of collaborative learning, and it becomes increasingly pervasive in schools, organizations, and everyday life. In this workshop it will be investigated how knowledge building can best be supported in social media contexts. It aims at getting an understanding of the principles that underlie collaborative learning and knowledge building.

Program, accommodation and lodging costs will be covered for all participants. The Summer School will be hosted in a hotel at the Swabian Alb. Study Abroad-China

I will be leading students from the University of Oklahoma on a four-week Study Abroad program in Kunming, China, June 17- July 14. Undergraduate students will take a three hour course that I teach, “Communication in Chinese Cultures” and a three hour course in East-West poetry. Currently this program is open only to students at the University of Oklahoma. However, if you are interested or know of students who might be interested, contact me and we can look into what could possibly be arranged.

We took students to China last summer and had a wonderful time. The city of Kunming is known as the city of “eternal spring” and has great weather, clean air, great food, and fascinating cultures. It is located in Yunnan Province, Southwest China, home to many non-Han ethnic groups. We will take students to Lijiang, home of the Naxi people, and Shangrila, where there are many Tibetans. It’s a great place to spend the summer, learn about China, and broaden your cultural horizons!

Students will examine corporate communication related case studies conducted by UK practitioners which show how issues of culture, history, politics, and theory play out in business practice.
Students will also have the opportunity to attend a day of seminars at the Harris-Manchester College of Oxford University ending with High Dinner with the Oxford students. The 2011 seminar will also provide a theory component provided by UK academics which will address key differences in the ways Americans and Europeans approach the task of theorizing about communication and the implications of these differences for business.

Study Abroad-Beijing

Communication in Beijing: A Study Abroad program

China’s global importance continues to grow exponentially.  This is true in terms of economics, but it is also true in other areas, including the environment and culture. As China’s political and cultural capital, Beijing is the best place to experience China’s dizzying transformation and enduring history.  This summer program would provide students a rich, multifaceted experience in China. Since this would not be a language-based experience, the program would be open to students not planning on learning Chinese. We are offering two 3 credit courses: Strategic Communication and Media Campaigns.  These courses are useful for students interested in  environmental campaigns, social media, public relations, advertising, political campaigns, and mass media.  Specifically, these courses would be beneficial to majors in Communication, Business, Political Science, Asian Studies, and Environmental Studies.  Since China is an economic power, Beijing is awash in strategic communication and media campaigns.  By living in Beijing students will be immersed in Beijing’s exciting media environment, which includes Chinese and international public relations/advertising companies and environmental NGOs.  Through our contacts in Beijing, we will arrange for students to learn both on-site and in the classroom from strategic communication professionals and environmental activists. The program will be hosted on the beautiful campus of China’s renowned Beijing University.

We will enhance students’ class experience through cultural outings, including visiting the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, Beijing Opera, the Olympics Bird’s Nest, the ancient Tanzhe Mountain Temple, and the many parks around Beijing.
The program will be led by Dr. Kevin DeLuca and Dr. Ye Sun and is open to undergraduate and graduate students from across the nation  (Cost-$2800).

Bremen University Fellowships

“The Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS) invites applications to its Ph.D. and postdoctoral programs. BIGSSS is an inter-university institute of the University of Bremen and Jacobs
University and is funded by the German Excellence Initiative. The program provides close supervision of dissertation work within a demand-tailored education and research framework. Fellows are expected to choose Bremen as their place of residence. BIGSSS is part of an international network of highly acknowledged graduate programs. It supports its doctoral and postdoctoral fellows in achieving early scientific independence and provides funds for the conduct, presentation, and publishing of their research. The language of instruction is English, and non-German students are encouraged to apply.

Successful applicants for the Ph.D. and Preparatory Fellowships will pursue a topic in one or more of BIGSSS’ five Thematic Fields:
– Global Integration
– Integration and Diversity in the New Europe
– Social Integration and the Welfare State
– Attitude Formation, Value Change, and Intercultural Communication
– Life-Course and Lifespan Dynamics.

15 Ph.D. Stipends/Fellowships: BIGSSS seeks candidates with strong academic abilities and a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in political science, sociology, or psychology.

2 Preparatory Fellowships for BA Graduates: Additionally BIGSSS offers 2 stipends of € 850/month for particularly talented BA graduates. After fulfilling some course requirements and having their proposals accepted within the first year, candidates can switch into the regular three year program.

2 Postdoctoral Stipends/Fellowships: We seek candidates pursuing English-language publication projects based either on their dissertations (by making findings available to an international audience through a book or journal article) or new research. Postdoctoral stipends of € 1750/month may run for between 6
and 24 months.

Ph.D. fellowships will start September 1, 2011, Postdoctoral fellows may plan their stays to begin later. Non-German students are strongly encouraged to apply. BIGSSS strives to increase the share of women in
