The Middle East Directions (MED) programme, the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSCAS) and the School of Transnational Governance (STG) at the European University Institute (EUI), are seeking applicants for a joint appointment as the Director of the MED Programme at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies and the School of Transnational Governance.

The MED progamme is one of the newest research programmes at the Centre and is a priority for the EUI. The Programme is a continuation of the Mediterranean Programme, which positioned the EUI at the forefront of the Euro-Mediterranean research and dialogue between 1999 and 2013. The MED programme has the ambition to become an international reference point for research on the Middle East and North Africa Region. The programme focusses its research on the following axes: socio-political, economic, religious and security trends and transformations. The successful candidate will lead and coordinate a team that engages in research and active dialogue with the world of practice.

The post will be a joint appointment with the School of Transnational Governance at the EUI. Within the STG, the successful candidate will contribute to develop and, if applicable, lead the School’s relevant thematic cluster. The successful candidate is expected to run a summer school and additional offering in the field of executive training and modules suitable for inclusion in a Masters programme.

Harron Chair @ Villanova U 2018

Job adsThe Department of Communication at Villanova University invites applications for the annual Harron Family Endowed Chair in Communication. The Department seeks a senior colleague whose scholarship, regardless of specialization or methodological orientation, has made a significant contribution to the discipline of Communication. This visiting, one-semester appointment is for the Fall of 2018. University-sponsored housing will be provided for the duration of the appointment. The responsibilities of the position include teaching one undergraduate and one graduate course related to his/her area of expertise, delivering a lecture to the Villanova community during the semester in residence, and mentoring faculty and students in the Communication Department. In addition to the salary generated by the Endowment and University-sponsored housing, The Harron Family Endowed Chair in Communication is eligible to receive graduate assistant support and to apply for a grant of up to $10,000 from the Waterhouse Family Institute for the Study of Communication and Society. Candidates will be expected to have a comprehensive research agenda in intercultural communication. They should have in hand a PhD in intercultural communication or a closely related field, experience in intercultural training, and native or near-native proficiency in at least one of the following languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian or Spanish. You will play a central role in the success of an Erasmus+ Higher Education project on developing professional intercultural communication competence among refugees. You will contribute to research design, data collection and analysis, and liaison with project partners and participants in the UK, Austria and the Netherlands, including refugees and language teachers working with them. You will also contribute to project administration and management, under the supervision of the project Principal Investigator, and to the writing of project materials and research reports and peer-reviewed publications, as well as to dissemination of the project at seminars and conferences.

For this role we are seeking an experienced and professional researcher who will be a subject specialist in the area of education and intercultural communication.  You will also have a good knowledge of mixed methods research approaches.

A good Master’s degree in a relevant discipline (education, applied linguistics, languages) is essential, as is good knowledge of the fields of intercultural communication and language pedagogy. A PhD or equivalent significant relevant experience (either completed or close to completion) in a relevant discipline (for example, education, applied linguistics, modern languages, technology) is desirable.

You will be expected to take significant initiative in their work and to work closely with the Principal Investigator over the details of the project. You will also contribute, where practical, to teaching and teacher training related to professional intercultural communication competence.

The post is fixed term to 31.8.2019, and will be part-time at 40% FTE.
