Applications are invited for appointment as Tenure-Track Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in Japanese Studies (Japan and the World) in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, to commence on July 1, 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and with consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract. The level of appointment will be determined based on qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. Exceptionally outstanding candidates at the Professor/Associate Professor level may be considered for appointment on tenure terms subject to approval.

Applicants should have an internationally recognised record of research excellence and possess proficient or near-proficient fluency in Japanese and English. We particularly encourage applications from scholars specializing in modern or contemporary Japan, whose work engages in the study of Japan in connection to other cultures and world regions, including in East Asia and beyond. Relevant areas of specialization include such fields as Anthropology, Sociology, International Relations, Media and Cultural Studies, Popular Culture, Literature, History, and other related areas. A digital approach to humanities, either methodologically or as research involving digital media (animation, gaming, etc.), is an additional advantage.

1.Assistant Professor of Communication and Race

The Department of Communication seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position of Communication and Race beginning August 16, 2023. They welcome applications from candidates who can contribute to the Department’s curricular domains: interpersonal communication, organizational communication, rhetoric, media studies, public relations, media production, and science, health, environment, and risk communication. The successful candidate will teach COM 417, Communication and Race, and they especially welcome applicants from candidates whose teaching and research interests may include (but are not limited to) the following: black digital humanities, environmental humanities, BIPOC digital media and culture (including PR and media production), social movements and counterpublics, international/intercultural communication, and/or anti-colonial, decolonial and postcolonial theories and methods.

  1. Communications Manager

The School of Anthropology & Museum Ethnography (SAME) and the Centre on Migration, Policy & Society (COMPAS) have an exciting new opportunity for a Communications Manager to lead on communications activities across the School and COMPAS. The Communications Manager will play a key role in developing and implementing effective communications strategies that align with priorities for both SAME and COMPAS, in conjunction with key staff members and stakeholders.

SAME is renowned for its broad and interdisciplinary approach to anthropology, its commitment to long-term ethnographic fieldwork, and its association with the Pitt Rivers Museum and the anthropology of visual and material culture. The School brings together a number of units and centres, including COMPAS. COMPAS is an external facing, international, vibrant and interdisciplinary research centre in the field of migration. Research projects and sub-units within the Centre include the Migration Observatory (MigObs) and the Global Exchange on Migration and Diversity (GEM). Research dissemination and communications have always been a key part of COMPAS research activity and the Communications Manager will be a member of COMPAS Senior Management Team.

The Communications Manager will report to the School’s Head of Administration and Finance, but will also work closely with the Head of School, and report to the COMPAS Director regarding COMPAS communications activity. The role will be supported in COMPAS by a dedicated Communications Officer and in the School by members in the administrative team trained to do digital communications (such as website and social media updates), and other communications activity (such as organising outreach events and open days). Part of the role for the School will involve bringing these activities together under a common Communications strategy and implementation plan.

2. Communications Officer

The Centre on Migration, Policy & Society (COMPAS), in the School of Anthropology & Museum Ethnography (SAME), is seeking a new Communications Officer to deal with a wide range of communications activity within COMPAS. COMPAS is an external facing, international, vibrant and interdisciplinary research centre in the field of migration. Research projects and sub-units within COMPAS include the Migration Observatory (MigObs) and the Global Exchange on Migration and Diversity (GEM).

The Communications Officer will report to the Communications Manager, but will also work closely with other members of the COMPAS team and will be expected to be a proactive member of the team.

Education Program Coordinator

International Program Coordinator

The Office of Global Engagement (OGE) at Teachers College, Columbia University (TC) is seeking an International Program Coordinator to provide administrative and operational support for global programs and partnerships. Reporting to the Director of Global Engagement, the International Program Coordinator will be responsible for the logistical planning and operations of OGE. The incumbent will support the Director and the International Projects and Partnerships Manager with administrative duties required to carry out program activities and special projects, including managing budgets and troubleshooting.

International Student Advisor

The International Student Adviser acts as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternative Responsible Officer (ARO) to deliver immigration services to the international student community at Teachers College (TC). Specifically, the incumbent establishes contacts with other university departments, personnel, outside agencies and individuals as required; and interprets university policies governing the area of responsibility. The incumbent will also advise international students by providing guidance regarding federal immigration regulations and procedures, personal/academic/cultural matters, and Teachers College resources to support the successful completion of their degree objectives. The International student Advisor will also assist with the development and implementation of services and programming for international students and the wider TC community. Note: U.S. government regulations require that Designated School Officials and Alternate Responsible Officers be U.S. citizens or legal Permanent Residents.

Mayors Migration Council: City Diplomacy Manager (Switzerland)

The City Diplomacy Manager will support the Head of Policy and Advocacy (based in New York City) to drive strategic and effective engagement of mayors in global migration and displacement policy dialogue and to maximize their impact in the global political stage. The position will support the City Diplomacy Program’s engagement with migration and displacement actors based in Geneva, Switzerland, including Member State Missions to the UN, the UN Migration Agency (IOM), and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). The City Diplomacy Manager will support the program in the lead up to the Global Refugee Forum and the GFMD (end 2023) — including contributing to the MMC’s engagement and advocacy strategies, conducting desk research, drafting presentations, and coordinating event preparation and logistics.

The successful candidate will be an entrepreneurial, strategic thinker with excellent project management, research, and communications skills. They will have experience working with UN Agencies and Member States, good knowledge of global migration and refugee governance, and preferably experience engaging with city governments. They will be a proactive, experienced relationship builder who thrives in a fast-paced, value-driven environment.

Responsibilities include teaching, research, scholarly activities, advising, field liaison and service. The department offers undergraduate and graduate programs and teaches academic and theoretic courses in International Relations, the Politics of Central and East Asia, Diplomatic History, Methodology, etc. Expertise is desired in at least two of the following areas of International Relations: Chinese Domestic and Geo-Politics, Chinese Economic Policy, The Economy and Geo-Politics of East Asia, Central Asia, Political Economy and Security Studies.
