Fulbright to Taiwan

From 2007-2008 I had the privilege of being a Fulbright Scholar in the traditional, 10 month, program to Taiwan. I was hosted by my friend and former University of Illinois classmate, Dr. Chung-Hui Liang at the Center for General Education, National Chiao Tung University, Hsinchu. We collaborated on a study of a recent trend in international migration, namely the rise in the number of “foreign brides” from such places as Mainland China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Indonesia, who through commercial brokers and/or personal connections, marry men in Taiwan. I continue to collaborate with Dr. Liang and work on this project.

Another wonderful benefit of the Fulbright Program is the financial support it provides for family members. (Be aware, however, that family member benefits are covered by the host country and vary.) My spouse and children joined me and we all had a wonderful time of cultural and language learning. Our youngest daughter became fluent in Mandarin Chinese at the primary school she attended, and my two older children, whose tuition at an American school in Taichung was paid by Fulbright, gained fluency in Chinese and learned a lot of up-to-date slang and popular culture that I was not aware of!

Finally, my Fulbright experience led me to my current position in the Department of Communication at the University of Macau. I attended a conference for all “Greater China” Fulbrighters held in Hong Kong. The last part of the conference included a visit to Macau and the University of Macau. Intrigued by Macau as a place of cultural dynamism and impressed with the university, I made a return visit a couple of months later to give lectures and a longer visit. One thing led to another and this year, 2012, I have a position in Macau. This has opened up opportunities for me to continue to do research in nearby Taiwan, Macau, and nearby provinces of China.

The Department of Communication of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities invites applications for Visiting Assistant Professor in the following area: Communication General Education.

Qualifications
The successful candidates will mainly be assigned to teach an innovative new General Education course required of all students at the university called “Communicating in a Global Society.”  This course will equip students to become effective communicators in a globally-interconnected knowledge society by developing their ability to both communicate their own ideas and to analyze and evaluate the communication of others. Students will learn how to analyze audiences, choose proper communication channels, and design and deliver effective oral, written, and electronic messages. The aim of the course is to make each student a more competent and confident communicator. The successful candidate is therefore expected to have teaching experience in general communication skills, persuasion and/or public speaking. Knowledge of video production, editing, or web design will be an asset.  The candidates may also be assigned to teach other courses in their areas of specialization in the regular Communication departmental curriculum.

This is a one-year visiting position with possibility of renewal for a second year.  The teaching load will be 4/4.

The ideal candidates will possess a PhD and a record of outstanding teaching.  A record of research may be an asset. Candidates must be fluent in English and able to teach courses in English. Ability to speak Chinese (Putonghua or Cantonese) may be an asset, but is not necessary for appointment. A doctoral degree is necessary for appointment at rank of Assistant Professor. Applicants with less qualification and experience can be offered lower positions under special circumstances.

The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in August 2012.

Communication Studies

The Communication Department currently offers broad-based curricula leading to BA, MA and PhD degrees. Current faculty work in areas as diverse as Journalism, Public Relations, Advertising, Mass Communication, New Media, Media and Cultural Studies, International and Intercultural Communication, and Media Production with emphases in quantitative, qualitative and critical approaches. FSH hopes to appoint a Department Head who can both contribute to and complement existing departmental emphases. The post is open to applicants from any area of Communication Studies. We are especially interested in candidates whose academic expertise or research programme is relevant to the concerns of Macau, the Greater China region and/or Southeast Asia.

Qualifications
Candidates should possess a PhD, a record of outstanding teaching, an international research reputation with a strong publication record in international journals, experience working with graduate students and experience in curriculum design. The candidate should also possess excellent organizational qualities, communication skills, leadership ability and experience in administrative posts. The successful candidate will be appointed as Head of the Department. Candidates must be fluent in English and able to lecture and publish research in English. Ability to speak Chinese (Putonghua or Cantonese) may be an asset, but is not necessary for the appointment.

Selected candidate may assume duty as early as January 2012. Later dates of appointment are also possible.

Position and Remuneration
Remuneration and appointment rank offered will be competitive and commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification, current position and professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12%, while after various discretionary exemptions the effective income tax rate has been around 5% – 7%.

Todd L. Sandel Profile

ProfilesTodd Sandel (Ph.D., University of Illinois) is Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Macau and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of International and Intercultural Communication.

He was a Fulbright Scholar to Taiwan 2007-2008, and in 2015 authored the book, Brides on Sale: Taiwanese Cross Border Marriages in a Globalizing Asia, for which he received the “Outstanding Book Award” from the International & Intercultural Division of the National Communication Association (NCA). Sandel has served as Chair of the Language & Social Interaction Division of NCA, President of the Association for Chinese Communication Studies, and Secretary of the Language & Social Interaction (LSI) Division of the International Communication Association (ICA). The paper, “Unpacking and describing interaction on Chinese WeChat: A methodological approach,” co-authored with his students, was awarded the “Top Paper Award” from LSI of ICA in 2018.

His research interests include intercultural communication, Chinese social media, language and social interaction, identity formation, and the ethnography of communication. More recent work, involving the study of affordances of social media, especially in Chinese contexts, has been published in the Journal of Pragmatics, Chinese Journal of Communication, Journal of Intercultural Communication Research, Information Development, and China Media Research. He is also conducting research with students and colleagues in such countries as Indonesia, Japan, and Bhutan.

Work for CID:

Todd Sandel wrote KC59: Teng, and described his Fulbright experience. He was was one of the participants at the National Communication Association’s Summer Conference on Intercultural Dialogue in Istanbul, Turkey, which led to the creation of CID, and one of the organizers of the Roundtable on Intercultural Dialogue in Asia, co-sponsored by CID. He currently serves on the CID Advisory Board.
