“This role will lead on the development and delivery of the Pre-sessional Orientation (supporting the Pre-sessional Programmes) including management of the Student Support team order to ensure the provision of appropriate pastoral support for all pre-sessional students. The role will also work proactively with relevant colleagues across the institution to enhance support for international student induction, transition, engagement and overall experience. In addition, the postholder will be required to develop and deliver some English language support.

The successful candidate will have strong interpersonal skills with a high level of intercultural awareness in order to support international students’ adaptation to a UK university and in collaboration with relevant colleagues. You should be a graduate with substantial experience of providing support for international students, preferably within an HE context as well as having significant experience of planning, coordinating and delivering events and/or projects. You will also hold an English language teaching qualification and have experience of teaching English to speakers of other languages. You must be fluent in English, both written and oral, and have excellent IT skills.”

Global transformations fostered by the decentralization of communications from mainstream media and governance institutions to a plural range of socioeconomic actors and stakeholders have shaken the foundations of social consensus, truth and objectivity in the construction of public spheres. Such transformation has posed unprecedented challenges to conflict management and peacebuilding, multiplying risks of instability and war, but also the spaces for the construction of collective meanings and the voices shaping them.

As the international community struggles to find consensus and challenges to peace and security risks multiply, the aim of this event is to explore the relationship between communication broadly conceived, and the challenges and possibilities for peace. Organizers will receive papers from scholars, practitioners and activists on all the dimensions of communication and conflict. Registration will be free of charge.

The Alwaleed Centre for the Study of Islam in the Contemporary World at the University of Edinburgh is looking for an early career fellow to contribute to its growing research, teaching and outreach program on contemporary Muslim societies in a globalized world. The post-holder will conduct research into the contemporary social/political/religious dynamics of a key region, or regions, of the Muslim world. Priority will be given to applicants whose research focuses on regions not currently well covered by the Centre’s team (e.g. Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, Central Asia, East Asia, The Americas) or on supra-national processes. Applications from candidates whose work engages with broader transnational, international or global contexts would be particularly welcomed, as the post-holder will work with the Centre’s director to develop a research cluster on the globalized Muslim world. The new Department of Languages, Cultures & Applied Linguistics at Birkbeck, University of London is seeking to appoint a lecturer specialising in contemporary and global English to contribute to existing programmes in Applied Linguistics and the development and delivery of new programmes in English language and linguistics from 1 September 2021, or as soon as possible thereafter. The post is full-time on an open-ended contract.

The post-holder will contribute to research, teaching, supervision and administration of the Department, with particular responsibility for developing and directing new programmes in English language and linguistics, and teaching and supervising in theoretical and applied linguistic studies of the English language at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. They will also develop research projects, as well as lead on, and/or contribute to the production and dissemination of research outputs/outcomes in their area of specialism.

Counter-Narratives in Language Education Research will highlight presentations by Dr. Nelson Flores, University of Pennsylvania and Dr. Giovanna Fassetta, University of Glasgow, with contributions from University of Leeds colleagues: Dr. Daniel Fobi, Dr. Kate Spowage and Rumana Hossain.

The speakers’ presentations in diverse areas of language education inquiry will lead to a more general reflection. Among the topics to be discussed:

  • What are the dominant narratives of language (and) education in our respective contexts and domains of inquiry?
  • Which/whose stories are not included in them and why do they need to be
  • How does our research need to change to make space for the multiple, complex and often competing counter-narratives?
