NCA IICD HONORS GRADUATE STUDENT SEMINAR

The International and Intercultural Communication Division (IICD) of the National Communication Association, in partnership with Sage Publications, proudly announces the first IICD Honors Graduate Student Seminar to be held at the 2014 NCA conference in Chicago.  The theme of the seminar is Intercultural Communication and New Media and will feature competitively selected papers of currently enrolled MA and Ph.D  students in communication and allied fields.  Intercultural new media research is an emerging and important new area of intercultural communication  and  consists of multiple dimensions including ( but not limited to) how new media impact intercultural communication theory (i.e acculturation/dialogue/competence/identity), how culture influences the social uses of new media, and  in what ways new media affect culture.  Papers will be reviewed and selected by top scholars who will also serve as research respondents during the honors seminar.  The honors seminar will be conducted on Saturday, November 22. 2014 from 3:30-7:00 PM at the NCA conference in the Conrad Hilton, Chicago.  The seminar will be followed by an IICD reception honoring the  participants.  Graduate students selected for participation will receive a monetary award as well as IICD honors graduate student certificates.  To be considered, full papers (APA including 200 word abstract) are due no later than June 9, 2015.  Finalists will be contacted and announced by  August 29, 2014.

CMM/WFI/ISI Fellows program

Applications are now being accepted for the 2013/2014 CMM/WFI/ISI FELLOWS PROGRAM. This unique fellowship program reflects a partnership among Villanova University’s Waterhouse Family Institute for the Study of Communication & Society, Fielding Graduate University, and the CMM Institute for Personal and Social Evolution.

Description: Communication is a generative force in the construction of social worlds. In the 21st Century these social worlds are increasingly created within a mediated landscape. These new media include a variety of digital platforms, experienced via a range of devices that offer on-demand access to content, interactive user feedback, creative participation, mobile community formation around specific content issues, and the real-time generation of new unregulated content. The new media, in fact, appear to offer it all and substantial claims have been made about their capacity to contribute to and enhance our contemporary social life.

In this year’s call for Fellows, we seek proposals that take a communication perspective and use the lens of CMM to further our understanding of lives lived in new media and, in particular, address the issue of how new media impacts our capacity to make and engage in social worlds.

Proposals that focus on any of the various types of new media are welcome. These new media can include web-hosted social sites like Facebook, mobile supported technology applications like twitter, or the range of different media hosted sites for citizen engagement and democratic participation activities.

We particularly encourage proposals that can demonstrate the practical import of a communication perspective and that enrich our understanding of the value of using CMM to understand the new media context and the types of social worlds these new media are helping to make and foster.

Application Process: Applications can be downloaded using the “Letter of Intent” form from the CMM Institute. Applications are due by Friday, November 1, 2013. Applicants will be notified the week of January 5, 2014.The three institutions will conduct a blind review process and select 3 Fellows for 2014. Each Fellow will receive a cash award of $2500.00 and will have your travel expenses to the 2014 Learning Exchange paid for.

If you are invited to become a CMM Fellow for 2014, you will be asked to present your work and engage participants in your topic area at the 2014 CMM Learning Exchange in October, 2014 (specific dates and location to be determined). Introduction
The popular uprisings in in Arab countries took the world by surprise. Described as the beginning of “the Arab democratic spring”, and likened to the fall of the Arab “Berlin” wall, the wave of protests has galvanized the attention of the world not only because of its transformative political implications for the region, but also because of the alleged central role of the Internet, specifically social media platforms in bringing about the first “Facebook” and “Twitter” revolutions (Wan, 2011), and in empowering “generation 2.0” (Hererra, 2011) to rise against tyranny and defy fear and repression.  However, after more than two years since the beginning of the uprisings, and the deposition of several dictators, democratic transition in the region is facing formidable challenges, chief among them political and economic instability, deep polarizations between Islamist and secular/liberal movements, multiple forms of sectarian, ethnic and religious cleavages, in addition to endemic corruption and inefficient governance. These challenges have already shifted into full-blown civil war in Syria and are threatening other countries, such as Egypt, Libya, and Tunisia. Against this background, one key question that needs to be addressed is whether ICTs in general can play a role in promoting civil society, civic culture and trust, bridging political elites to disenchanted young people and the general population, and enhancing governance. In conjunction with this question, there is an urgent need to examine how identity politics is informing and shaping how the notions of civil society, citizenship, and pluralism are imagined and enacted online and the implications thereof for democratic transition in the region. While the outcome of these regional upheavals is still difficult to predict, we believe the time is ripe for a rigorous debate and research into the intersections of the cultural, political and technological issues that led to the “Arab Spring.”

Objectives of the Book
Editors seek innovative contributions that analyze the role of ICTs, particularly the Internet and other new media, in the ongoing upheavals in Arab societies. We are interested in chapters that interrogate the implications of these technologies for cultural expression, and identity building at the individual and collective levels in these societies.  Given how new cultural forms of self-expression from rap music to blogging have become intertwined in the Tunisian and the Egyptian revolutions, for instance, we seek contributions on the various linkages between self-expression, self-reflexivity, political dissent and new media discourses in the region.  Underscoring the linkages between identity politics, collective action repertoire, political culture, and new communication technologies, this book seeks to examine the Arab new media environment leading to the Arab Spring and its aftermath.

Sample Topics
We encourage multidisciplinary approaches that employ social movement theory, cultural studies, radical democracy theory, or network theory, among others, to study and interpret dissent, resistance, collective action, and democratic transition in Arab societies. Other theoretical, empirical and methodology approaches are also welcome. Themes and questions to be considered could include but are not limited to
1)    Research that theorizes/applies social movement theory to analyze the “Arab Spring;”
2)    Cases studies addressing new cultural forms and Arab/Muslim identities (e.g. hip hop music, digital art, and photography);
3)    Critical assessment of youth movement, youth culture, and political consciousness;
4)    Case studies addressing ICTs, new media audiences, ethnic minorities and identities;
5)    New empirical analyses of ICTs and political Islam/other social movements in the Arab world;
6)    Theoretical and empirical assessments of the intersection between new media and gender in the region (e.g. feminist movements, women identities and self-expression);
7)    Comparative analyses of new journalism forms in the Arab world (e.g. citizen journalism);
8)    Conceptually- and theoretically-informed evaluation of the intersections between new media and democracy in the region;
9)    Other approaches that fit with the above themes and contribute to theory building are welcome.

Submission Requirements
Interested authors should send an abstract of no more than 600 words and a short bio to the Editors’ email addresses by October 15, 2013. Authors of accepted abstracts will be notified by October 30, 2013 and asked to submit a full chapter of no more than 8,000 words by February 30, 2014.
Chapter proposals must be original work that has not been published. Authors should follow the American Psychological Association (APA) style manual and submit abstracts and chapters in MS Word. 1) A tenure track Assistant Professor in Health Communication for July 2014. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Communication or a closely related field. ABDs are encouraged to apply, but a Ph.D. degree is required by date of appointment. The successful candidate should demonstrate a clear promise of research excellence in health communication. We are interested in candidates who explore health communication using participatory and culture-centered methodologies or approaches. The successful candidate will teach a range of courses in Health Communication and Communication Management/Public Relations, and work closely with the Center for Culture-Centered Approach to Research and Evaluation (CARE) at NUS. CARE is a global hub for health communication research that uses participatory and culture-centered methodologies to develop community-driven health communication solutions. 2. Associate Professor in Health Communication and/or Communication Management. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Communication or a closely related field, and demonstrated excellence in teaching and research.  We are interested in scholars who approach communication through new and emergent media perspectives and value diverse research methods. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a range of courses in health communication and communication management/public relations, and play active roles in developing the Department’s graduate program and mentoring graduate students.

3. Associate Professor in Media Studies/New Media. The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. in Communication or a closely related field, who has demonstrated excellence in teaching and research.  We seek a colleague to conduct teaching and research in one or more of the following specializations in New Media: (a) Freedom of Speech, Regulation, and Control, and (b) Public Discourse and Public Participation. We are interested in scholars with a record of research or a research interest in Asian contexts.

The Department of Communications and New Media at the National University of Singapore (NUS) seeks to hire a tenured Full Professor with research and teaching specialization in Communication Management.
