The School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies welcomes applications from candidates with excellent research and teaching potential for the position of Assistant Professor in Applied Intercultural Communication and Latin American Studies.

Expertise will be required in contemporary Latin American cultures, histories and societies, and Spanish language, with specific expertise in applied intercultural communication, ideally for business, industry and enterprise purposes. Applications from candidates with a specialisation in one or more of the following will be particularly welcome: Cross-cultural management; Business Ethics and Latin American Resources (Environmental Humanities); EU-Latin America relations, with specific interest in developing Irish-Latin American networks and partnerships. Applicants with one or more regional specialisations including (but not limited to) any of the following are also particularly welcome: the Pacific Alliance (Mexico-Colombia-Chile and Peru), Mercosur (members and associates) and Caribbean, Latin American and Irish/EU relations, which could include CARICOM and Latin American/European connections. They particularly welcome regional expertise which is not limited to a single country, and not necessarily to a single language, but Spanish is a core requirement.

Call for papers: Family Language Policy Conference: Reimagining the Field, University of Galway, Galway, Ireland, 22-23 October 2024. Deadline: 31 July 2024.

In their 2008 paper, King et al. laid the foundation for the emergence of the field that came to be recognised as Family Language Policy (FLP). Since then, this field of inquiry has received an increasing amount of scholarly attention and has evolved into a burgeoning field over the last decade. In this short time span, the core interests of FLP have shifted: While it initially attempted “to draw direct causal links across ideologies, practices, and outcomes”, it moved on to examining “how families are constructed through multilingual language practices, and how language functions as a resource for this process of family making and meaning making” (King 2016: 728). Recent FLP scholarship has pointed to the necessity of putting under scrutiny the central concepts of family, language, and language policy and not departing from taken-for-granted notions in order to produce situated accounts of FLP (Lanza & Lomeu Gomes 2020). A recent proposal even suggests reimagining the field “under the more all-encompassing label of family multilingualism” (Léglise 2023: 288), arguing that the institutionalisation of FLP as a field has marginalised different kinds of knowledges pertinent to family multilingualism.

Encouraged by the impetus of these and other reflections on the foundations of research on family language policy and family multilingualism, this Hybrid International Conference on Family Language Policy is being organised under the theme of Reimagining the Field. The aim is to provide a forum for discussing epistemological, theoretical and methodological considerations around FLP and family multilingualism (FM), for setting future research agendas and for exploring possibilities for establishing regular venues for such exchange.

Contributions in the form of papers and symposia are welcomed on the following issues:
• Epistemological foundations of FLP/FM
• Key theoretical concepts in FLP/FM
• Nexus of FLP/FM and the wider community
• Interaction between FLP/FM and educational institutions
• Children’s agency
• Digital and multimodal interaction in the family

U Galway: PhD Studentship in GAELFAM (Ireland)

The GAELFAM investigates the everyday linguistic experiences of families who reside in the Irish Gaeltacht and who use a language other than/in addition to Irish or English in the home. The PhD researcher will focus on adolescents who fit this profile and will carry out a number of tasks to enable the successful competition of their PhD thesis and viva voce examination. The PhD researcher will gain valuable skills in conducting ethnographic research in school settings, and will also present their research findings at a number of national and international conferences, as well as contribute to organising a conference at the University of Galway and a youth-led event, also to be held at the University of Galway. They will also contribute to scholarly publications and publications for a wider audience (e.g. blog posts). Garda-vetting will apply.

Field of specialization is open but should not duplicate existing expertise within the Department of Near and Middle Eastern Studies. Maynooth University is seeking an excellent academic to join their staff as an Assistant Professor in Applied Linguistics with a specialism in English-language Pedagogy. Given the SMLLC’s plans for strategic development in the coming years, they would be especially interested in candidates whose research focuses on English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI), English-Medium Education (EME), TESOL, Integrated Content and Language Learning in Higher Education (ICLHE), TESL, and/or the intercultural dimensions of teaching of, and through, English in a higher-education context.

The person appointed will have a proven record of teaching, research, and publication, appropriate to career stage. I just ran across this very cute video where comedian Killian Sundermann demonstrates the difference between German and Irish ways of offering cake, and the confusion that ensues.

For further information about the video, which went viral and resulted in 10 million views, watch the 4-minute version, which includes an interview with Sundermann. He grew up in Ireland with German parents, and so obviously has a good sense of how cultural differences can be displayed through interaction. Apparently the incident with the cake is based on reality. He says “I’m really just stealing my family’s stories.”

Dublin City U: Migration Studies (Ireland)

SALIS has a long tradition of teaching and research in Intercultural Studies and a strong international reputation in this field. They currently offer a BA in Social Science and Cultural Innovation and an MA in Refugee Integration, as well as modules at doctoral level. The existing Intercultural Studies team carries out research on aspects of multiculturalism, conflict resolution, global cultures and forced migration. They are home to a vibrant PhD community and also welcome post-doctoral fellows.

The appointee will report to the Head of School and actively contribute to the existing Intercultural and Migration Studies teaching, research and administrative activities of SALIS. The successful candidate will be able to prepare, deliver and assess a range of core subjects at undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD level in a manner consistent with DCU’s high academic standards and in a hybrid environment which involves both campus delivery and elements of remote delivery. Teaching extends to supporting innovation in curriculum development.

NOTE: There is a second position for an Assistant Professor in Translation Studies, also as part of the Faculty of Humanities and SALIS, having the same deadline. The Department of Near and Middle Eastern Studies welcomes applications for the position of Lecturer (Yunus Emre Institute Lectureship in Turkish Cultural History) in Turkish Cultural History. Applications from candidates with a specialisation in the social and/or cultural history of the Ottoman Empire will be particularly welcome. Applicants must hold a PhD and have a strong research profile appropriate to their career stage. They will be expected to demonstrate an ability to address wider thematic debates and to teach survey courses to undergraduates, as well as offer more advanced research led modules in their area of specialisation. They will also be expected to develop modules for post graduate students. The successful candidate will develop new modules as well as contribute to modules in the Department of Near and Middle Eastern Studies and in the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies. The successful candidate will also be expected to undertake the organisation of public events and outreach related to Turkish Cultural History in consultation with the Head of Department of Near and Middle Eastern Studies and the Yunus Emre Institute.

The School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies (SALIS) is a multilingual, multicultural, research-focused school with specialisms in Modern Languages (Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese and Spanish); Applied Linguistics; Translation Studies; Literary Studies; Migration Studies; Sexuality Studies; and Cultural and Intercultural Studies. The research frequently crosses disciplinary and linguistic boundaries and our scholarship is increasingly concerned with digital technologies, literacies, and practises in a variety of professional, academic and social contexts.

As part of the commitment to ensuring ongoing excellence in doctoral-level research, SALIS is pleased to offer a number of scholarships for full-time PhD students. The scholarships will commence on the 1st October, 2022. Successful candidates will receive a stipend of €16,500 per annum for up to four years, subject to satisfactory annual progression. Registration fees will also be paid.
