The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars Asia Program, in conjunction with the Kissinger Institute on China and the United States, seeks applicants for the Wilson China Fellowship from policy-oriented academics with specialization in political, social, economic, security, or historical issues related to China. The aim of this new fellowship is to produce new and original pieces of research that improve understanding of the role that China is playing in the Indo-Pacific, its relations with its neighbors and the United States, and its impact on peace and security issues. The Department was first established as the “Translation Programme” in 1990, and was awarded full independent departmental status in 2019. During our 30-year history, we have built a reputation as one of the leading centres in the region for teaching and research in Translation, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies. The Department offers teaching at BA, MA and Research Postgraduate levels, and is among the most internationalized in the region, with an academic staff comprising members from Hong Kong, the Chinese Mainland, Taiwan, Spain, the UK and Australia. The Programme has particular strengths in literary translation, minority cultures in translation, and interpreting, and is also expanding its profile in the field of translation technology.

The successful candidate is expected to deliver lectures and seminars in topics within Literature and Applied Linguistics. Specifically, we are looking for someone who has some teaching experience in higher education, specializing in at least two of the following areas: Applied Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Intercultural Communication, Business and Professional Communication, Discourse Analysis, English Literature, Drama, English Language Teaching Methods, and Academic Learning Skills. The candidate is required to deliver teaching to all levels of the undergraduate and possibly postgraduate programmes. Candidates who are interested in research and who will contribute to Research and Knowledge Exchange activities and undertake administrative duties are preferred. Candidates must have a PhD degree at or near completion in a relevant discipline, preferably in English Literature or Applied Linguistics, and excellent communication and presentation skills in English.

Containing COVID-19: Mobile Documentaries Competition (China)

Applied ICDCall for entries: Containing COVID-19: Mobile Documentaries, International Mobile Storytelling Competition Series 2020. Institute for Mobile Studies, School of International Communications, University of Nottingham, Ningbo,  China. Deadline: 1 June 2020.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 in early January 2020, global efforts in containing the virus have been widely documented by mobile users around the world. To document and enhance global joint efforts in containing the virus, we organize an online international mobile documentary competition.

Themes: The competition has, but not limited to, the following three suggested themes: (a) connections (with a special focus on connecting people, expertise and resources although physically distanced during the virus outbreak), (b) collaborations (with a special focus on collaboration processes on different fronts in containing the virus), and (c) contributions (with a special focus on achievements and progress in containing the virus locally, nationally or globally). Other suggested themes could include nurses stories, doctor stories, patients stories, patients’ family stories, or city stories in containing COVID-19.

Categories: The competition has two categories: (a) original documentaries or (b) edited documentaries using video clips collected with permission from original sources.

MOOC Intercultural Communication (China)

“MOOCs”Intercultural Communication MOOC, Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), Shanghai, China. Opens March 2, 2020 with free access for 7 weeks from any start date between March-July 2020.

Virtual education is especially being promoted across China or other affected areas to limit the spread of the Corona virus. To help students from anywhere connect with the world during this time, the SISU “Intercultural Communication” course is being offered again as a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course).

This introductory 5-week course (doable in about 4 hours per week) seeks to engage global learners to better appreciate, adjust to, and work or study in different cultures. The weekly topics focus on (1) comprehending intercultural communication, (2) contextualizing cultural identities, (3) comparing cultural communication styles (4) clarifying and contrasting values, and (5) cultivating intercultural adaptation.

For those who may also be interested in languages, SISU/FutureLearn are also opening 3 other introductory courses for learning Chinese at the same time: Chinese Pronunciation and Tones, Chinese Grammar, and Chinese Conversation.

The International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) invites the submission of abstracts of papers and proposals for panels for the 2020 Congress of the Association, which will be held from 12 to 16 July, 2020 at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China.

At the critical juncture of the second decade of the 21st century, the world is facing tremendous challenges. The past three decades of cultural, economic and communication globalisation have created sharp income and wealth inequities, a divisive international community, dysfunctional media, an increasingly fragmented digital culture and an accelerating environmental crisis. We witness growing populism and protectionism and a dissolving consensus on global engagement and international collaboration. We see deepening technological contestation in digital media and artificial intelligence between the world’s two economic powerhouses. We also witness a sharp decline of the quality of national and international information flows as a result of widespread misinformation facilitated by social media.

These developments pose urgent questions and challenges for media and communications scholars. What are the reasons for the division, gaps and fragmentation we now see? What roles have digital media communication played in these developments at both the local and global levels? What values should inform our proposals for addressing them?

This year’s conference aims to respond to those challenges by re-examining the roles and patterns of global communication while including local voices, seeking critical reflections on the relationship between them, and exploring feasible agendas for a shared digital future based on inclusiveness, respect and reciprocity.

 

Renmin U: Postdoctoral Fellowships in Journalism/Communication (China)

The School of Journalism and Communication at Renmin University of China was founded in 1955. Since then, it has developed into a nationally-acclaimed institution of academic research, professional training and education reform in journalism and communication. The school’s Journalism and Communication discipline is ranked as the first-class key discipline by the Ministry of Education. It has a national experimental teaching demonstration center, and a Ministry of Education key research base of humanities and social sciences, the Journalism and Social Development Research Center. The journalism and communication program has been persistently ranked as Top 1 in previous rounds of national disciplinary assessment organized by the Ministry of Education. It has been enrolled into the Chinese “Double First Class” discipline plan in 2017. In order to advance the “Double First Class” discipline development, facilitate the future faculty recruitment and enhance academic research, the school is currently accepting applications all over the world for multiple postdoctoral positions.
