Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Researcher for the Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy at CRASSH. The post will run for five years and applicants are expected to be in post as soon as possible.The successful candidate will undertake a research project with support and mentoring from the MCTD team. Applicants will need to demonstrate how their work intersects with:

  • The understanding and countering of public ignorance about the societal and personal impact of the technology. Building journalistic capacity in conjunction with major UK media organisations to foster informed coverage of tech issues, data-savvy investigative journalism and critical examination of tech narratives on AI, machine-learning, determinism and policy.
  • The significance and future of work in a digitally dominated world.
    Understanding and mitigating the environmental impact of digital technology.
  • Trust and accountability in the tech industry.
  • Identifying, mapping and fostering creative uses of digital technology for energising and revitalising constitutional democracy that have emerged in Europe over the past decade; become a convening point for dissemination and innovation in this space.
    We take this to include empirical work, critical theorisation, and research focusing on key issues in digital transformation as it affects cultural forms and practices, societies, archival issues, and knowledge production and dissemination.

The Cornell Social Media Lab in the Department of Communication at Cornell University is seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Associate to participate in inter-university research at the intersection of instructional design, human-computer interaction, and educational technology. The postdoc will work on the development of technologies and content for educational interventions as a part of the Social Media TestDrive project, an interactive digital citizenship education tool developed in collaboration with Common Sense Education. As they seek to expand the Social Media TestDrive program to new populations, such as youth from low-income households and older adults, they are especially interested in someone who has interest and experience designing inclusive technologies and educational interventions for diverse populations of learners.

This position is a 1-year, full-time academic position beginning August 1, 2020 and renewable for a 2nd year contingent on available work, funding and performance. The Postdoctoral Associate will be part of an interdisciplinary project team of researchers and students in the Cornell Social Media Lab, the Cornell Bronfenbrenner Center for Translational Research, Information Science, Lehigh University College of Engineering and Applied Science, and external partners (e.g., Common Sense Education, New York State 4-H) who are working to advance social media literacy and digital education among youth. The ideal candidate will be proactive, resourceful, highly engaged, and passionate about digital learning and social media literacy. The Postdoctoral Associate will be based in the Cornell Social Media Lab and will have access to state-of-the-art research facilities and a collaborative community of scholars interested in social behaviors and information and communication technologies.

Aarhus U Postdoc: Intellectual History of Global Inequality: Argentina (Denmark)

The School of Culture and Society at Aarhus University invites applications for a one-year postdoctoral fellowship in the history of ideas. The position is full-time, and is available from 1 February 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position will be part of the project ‘An Intellectual History of Global Inequality, 1960-2015’.

The project will investigate the historical relationship between location and the intellectual history of inequality. The research objects of this study are concepts, theories and ‘languages’ relating to international economic inequality from 1960 to 2015. The approach is historical-contextualist and combines conceptual and intellectual history, focusing upon contributions to academic and public debates by public intellectuals, especially economists, sociologists, historians and philosophers. Furthermore, the approach is comparative: it will compare the thought of Northern (primarily American), Indian, African (primarily Ghanaian) and South American (primarily Argentinian) public intellectuals. The project is thus divided into four subprojects (with this position focusing on Argentina), each investigating a significant geographical area in the global discourse on economic inequality, enabling us to make new comparisons and trace connections in South-South as well as in North-South exchanges. The project will be an important contribution to the global turn in intellectual and conceptual history. The successful applicant will be responsible for the sub-project on Argentina. The postdoc will study key Argentinian intellectuals and the intellectual history of international and global economic inequality in Argentina.

Media Inequality & Change Center: Postdoc (USA)

PostdocsPost-Doctoral Researcher for Philadelphia’s Media Ecosystem: Journalism, Community Organizing, and the Narratives and Power Structures that Shape our City, Media, Inequality & Change Center, Philadelphia, PA. Deadline extended: May 1, 2020.

This project will explore the way that community groups across the region harness media and journalism and other tools to build community power. The researcher will focus on understanding the interrelationship between community-oriented media, organizing, and social change. This research will include a network analysis of both community media institutions and local community groups to understand their interconnections, as well as a qualitative examination of the ways media and other tools are harnessed to build within and across communities in the region. This post is full-time and for up to 24 months (part-time applications will also be considered).

The Media, Inequality and Change Center (MIC) is a collaboration between the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School and Rutgers University’s School of Communication and Information. The Center explores the intersections between media, democracy, technology, policy, and social justice. It is committed to studying the political economy of social problems, media, and democracy, while engaging local activist projects, and drawing connections with national and international social movements. 

Postdoc: Intercultural Danish-German Communication (Denmark)

For the position, funded by an Aarhus University Research Foundation starting grant, the department is seeking an applicant who will contribute to the research in the project “Intercultural Danish-German communication”, in close cooperation with the Interreg 5A project kultKIT. The successful applicant will carry out research on Danish-German intercultural communication in close collaboration with principal investigator Erla Hallsteinsdóttir. The successful applicant must be prepared to participate in and contribute to the research activities (data collection and analysis as well as publication and dissemination activities) as they are defined in the project application.

The focus of the research will be on aspects that are fundamental to intercultural understanding in international strategic communication in a broad sense, with special focus on aspects of intercultural understanding, intercultural competences or linguistic aspects of interculturality. The project is linked to the research programme Communication in International Business and the Professions at the School of Communication and Culture.

The postdoctoral researcher is expected to have a background in intercultural communication. We are particularly interested in applicants with both research expertise and practical experience in communication in a Danish-German context.
