This workshop will demonstrate how teaching literature in the foreign language classroom can provide a platform for students to start a dialogue over a contentious subject that they would not approach otherwise. Examples will be presented from francophone literature alongside their translations. The workshop will run in English.

The organizers invite you to join a discussion on the power of language. A panel of experts will investigate how various expressions used in migration and urban studies are produced and used differently in discrete cultural and national contexts – in Canada and France in particular, but also in Arab countries. They will explore notions such as diversity, laïcité, multiculturalism, integration, assimilation, cosmopolitanism, with a view to understand their socio-historical contexts and the difficulty of translating, interpreting and communicating them in other languages and contexts. While considering the multitude of expressions used in diverse cultural contexts, they will also explore the power relations that underlie the different categorization politics deployed in urban and migration dynamics.

The Policy Studies Organization (PSO) and The Digest of Middle East Studies (DOMES) have announced the official call for proposals for their annual Middle East Dialogue. The event aims to promote dialogue about current policy concerns in the Middle East, and to provide a civil space for discussion across the religious and political spectrum. As in years past, they invite scholars, policy-makers, and other leaders within the global and local community to respectfully, and productively, discuss the diverse range of issues affecting the region.

The Institute for the Study of Human Rights and the Harriman Institute invite you to a talk with Marija Krstevska, Secretary General, Center for Intercultural Dialogue, North Macedonia (held online). Krstevska will discuss her trajectory as a girl raised in a mono-ethnic environment to a young advocate for intercultural acceptance. She is the Secretary General of the Center for Intercultural Dialogue, a youth organization in Kumanovo, North Macedonia. Through that organization, she has created learning opportunities within non-formal education for diverse groups of learners, advocated for direct involvement in community decision-making, and supported youth participation through inclusive policies. She will discuss the importance of active citizenship, capacity building, and non-formal education in fostering intercultural dialogue among youth. Marija is a participant in the 2021-22 Human Rights Advocates Program at the Institute for the Study of Human Rights

World Teachers’ Day: Teachers at the Heart of Education Recovery, October 5, 2021. Sponsored by UNESCO, UNICEF, International Labour Organization, and Education International.
We honor all the teachers who follow the Center for Intercultural Dialogue. This has been a difficult year and a half for so many. Take a moment to pause, and appreciate all that has been accomplished despite the difficulties caused by the pandemic.
For those who have the time, World Teachers’ Day celebrations will take place from 4 to 8 October 2021.
Dialogues for Artists in a Changing World (Malaysia but Online)
Dialogues for Artists in a Changing World: Florescence, Neuroaesthetics, and Intercultural Art, University Pendidakan Sultan Idris, Selangor, Malaysia, Online, October 1, 2021.
Florescence is the term used to refer to flowering; a potent image that recurs throughout art history with shifting contexts and symbolism. Lida Sherafatmand, co-author of the Manifesto of Florescencism, will discuss her belief in the power of art to contribute to social and environmental equilibrium, and its ability to resonate beyond geographic borders. Dr. Ramin Hajianfard, Senior Lecturer in Art & Design at the University Pendidakan Sultan Idris, Malaysia, whose research interests include peace painting and intercultural aesthetics, will participate as well. Touching on the importance of art having an awareness of other disciplines, including psychology and social science, the conversation will explore the political power of an aesthetics of gentle beauty and the importance for painting to be in constant conversation with many different spheres, as well as how research into neuroaesthetics can widen the scope of understanding of the ways in which art interacts with and affects viewers.

UN Day of Peace Sept 21 2021
Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire. The 2021 theme for the International Day of Peace is “Recovering better for an equitable and sustainable world.” In 2021, as we heal from the COVID-19 pandemic, we are inspired to think creatively and collectively about how to help everyone recover better, how to build resilience, and how to transform our world into one that is more equal, more just, equitable, inclusive, sustainable, and healthier.

This event is part of the Hub for Education & Language Diversity (HELD) summer school, July 21-23, 2021, but is open to everyone.
What is the relationship between identity, digital storytelling and linguistic citizenship? Due to advances in digital technology, there are new relations of power at micro and macro levels, and digital literacy has become essential in “claiming the right to speak.” As language learners navigate these changing times, they need to negotiate new identities, investments, and imagined futures.
In this presentation, Dr Bonny Norton demonstrates that while there are social structures that may constrain a language learner’s linguistic citizenship, digital stories in multiple languages can help these learners claim the right to be heard. Drawing on her recent research on digital storytelling in both wealthy and poorly resourced communities worldwide, she discusses how freely available digital stories in multiple languages can harness the linguistic capital of language learners in homes and schools, with exciting implications for the promotion of linguistic citizenship in communities worldwide.
