ICA in Prague 2018 (Czech Republic)

ConferencesThe International Communication Association will hold its annual convention 24-27 May 2018 in Prague (Czech Republic).

Against a backdrop of evolving technologies and shifting sociocultural and political dynamics, the 2018 ICA conference theme, Voices, encourages scholars to delve more deeply into a concept inextricably linked with communication.

Examined from multiple epistemological approaches, a host of methodologies, and numerous levels of analysis, studying voice – or the plurality of voices – can illuminate the process by which it is fostered and/or constrained as well as the conditions under which it is expressed and/or stifled. More important, the study of voice can shed light on the process by which it impacts behaviors, defines relationships, influences policies, and shapes the world in which we live. In other words, the conference theme encourages the submission of scholarship that examines voice vis-à-vis various discourses, actors, processes, and outcomes.

The significance of voice is reflected in contemporary debates around domestic and transnational issues such as the environment and immigration. It also plays a critical role in numerous systems, regardless of whether these systems are bound interpersonally, organizationally, culturally, politically, or socially. Irrespective of the domain of study, the conference theme Voices encourages scholars to address key questions related to:

* Theorizing about voice
* The creation and representation of voice
* The expression of voice
* The impact of voice

Before and after each annual conference, ICA hosts pre- and postconferences. These sessions are either all-day or half-day miniconferences, intended as an extension of the main ICA conference, but separate in terms of budget, programming, and administration.

For the 2018 Prague conference, space in the hotel is limited. While we have approximately 20 slots within the hotels, ICA also accepts proposals for pre/postconferences to be held outside of the hotel and even outside of Prague. All off-site preconferences outside Prague should be held on Wednesday, 24 May, with the following day 25 May given to travelling to Prague. All on-site (in the conference hotels) preconferences will be held on Thursday, 25 May with an end time of 5pm.

All postconferences will be on Tuesday, 29 May if in the hotel or elsewhere in Prague, or Wednesday or later if outside Prague. If you choose to have an off-site conference, you may either propose a location you have already obtained in advance or you may mark on your proposal form that you wish to speak with our local host for help in determining a location.

ICA Regional: Communications Research in the Digital Age (India)

The ICA South Asia regional conference intends to examine communications research in digital age under four parallel tracks for paper presentation:

A. Individual and Digital Exposure (IDE): What is the relationship of individual with the digital media?

B. Gender, Culture Technology (GCT): How does community and technology intersect in a given culture?

C. Digital Media Ecology (DME): Who are the stakeholders and players of digital media landscape?

D. Digital Research Methodologies (DRM): What are methodological challenges for digital media research?

We recognize that all the themes are intersecting and can be interwoven, yet we expect that you choose ONE that you think is nearest to your research/panel so that regional interest groups can be formed towards the end of the conference. By submitting abstract you are agreeing to register for the Conference. There will be workshops as well as plenary at the Conference.

CFP Expressions of Race & Racism Online (Finland)

ConferencesCFP: Expressions of race and racism online. This working group is part of the 14th Society for the Study of Ethnic Relations and International Migration (ETMU) Conference on Race, Power and Mobilities (October 26-27, 2017), University of Jyväskylä, Finland.

The long-lasting idea that dematerialized online presence would downplay racial issues is vanishing as studies are increasingly showing the extent to which race is embedded in online structures, vocabulary, and users’ practices (Daniels, 2012). Though much research has been conducted on representations of race in traditional media, few studies have investigated expressions of race and racism in online and social media, and their findings underline the complexity of the topic (Sommier, van Sterkenburg, & Hofhuis, in press).

This working group therefore calls for papers tackling online expressions of race and racism to further understand associated strategies, tensions, and outcomes. Current findings point to a wide range of dialectics that should be further explored. Studies urge for holistic approaches (e.g. Titley, 2014) to attend to the interplay between colorblind and blatant racism, individual and structural aspects, local and global discourses, and traditional and social media. These broad research areas include, but are not limited to:

– users’ online practices, identity formation and social interactions (e.g. Hughey, 2008)
– the creation of racial digital divides (e.g. boyd, 2013)
– strategies used to disguise online racist discourses (e.g. Sharma & Brooker, 2016)
– methodological challenges associated with the study of expressions of race and racism in online settings

The academic training workshop will focus on the theme of Growing Communication Research and Scholarship in Africa through Training and Mentorship.

Please ensure your abstract meets the requirements.

Those who wish to participate should submit a Research Abstract.  The abstract should be 1,500-2,000 words and should represent work-in-progress. The work does not have to be in a perfect state, as the intention is to build from this abstract to a full manuscript with assistance from the training workshop.

Human movement and relocation in the 21st century, by choice or in response to human-made or natural disasters, is becoming increasingly common. One outcome of this trend is that many people have become entrenched in, or fallen back onto, defensive lines and discourse as a means to protect their cultural identities. However, engaging dissimilar others–politically, professionally, or personally–from a defensive posture makes productive intercultural interaction and policy making difficult at best, and perhaps unattainable.

This situation poses significant challenges to ongoing peaceful negotiation of cultural identities. In other words, what makes me “me,” you “you,” and us “us”? Whether taken from the perspective of the immigrants, their offspring, host societies, ethnic minorities, or institutional actors operating in the field, the process of identity building and maintenance has always resulted from comparing oneself to “the other,” in seeking out both similarities and differences. It is enhanced or undermined by the stories told within oneself and among friends and compatriots. The process can be productive, mind-expanding, inclusive, and beneficial, just as easily as it can be fraught with contradictions, tension, fear, and reactionary stances.

But who is the owner of a culture or cultural information? Who is allowed to be an “authentic” representative of a culture? When is the assumed nature of a culture–or one’s cultural identity–allowed to evolve and by what means? What is the role of people invested in the field of intercultural communication? What kind of networks, initiatives, best practices, and hopeful ideas can be offered or advanced? How does theoretical insight best intersect with practical challenges?

The Congress is held every five years, and is meant to showcase current developments in Linguistics. The Congress will run over five days, have a plenary panel on linguistics in South Africa, nine plenary speakers covering a range of major sub-fields, 10 paper sessions each with its own focus speaker, up to 30 workshops, and several poster sessions. While speakers and topics are drawn from a wide international pool, ICL 20 will take the additional opportunity of showcasing African language research. It will also cover applied linguistic areas of research of vital importance to the African continent and the 21st century at large, with a special extended session on Multilingualism, Education, Policy and Development, and a 2 day workshop on New directions in World Englishes research.

The international conference on Future of Media and Communication Research: Media Ecology and Big Data welcomes abstracts that deal with original quantitative or qualitative research related to any sub-themes listed under the Submissions page. The abstracts that are submitted to the conference will be blind reviewed by a panel of scholars put together by the scientific research committee from Fudan University, China and Ohio University, USA.

The official language of presentations at the conference is primarily English.

In the age of new technology and big data, the media landscape in China and around the world is changing rapidly with the rise of social media and digital media. The media ecology brings various new topics for the media industry, academics and scholars. Areas being explored at all institutional/organizational sectors of media include—but not limited to—media convergence, the use of big data, and audience engagement. This program will be of interest to academics, industry and other interested stakeholders who are working with digital technology, media or mass communication to ideate and present new approaches to addressing or exploring these important topics. Also, developing an updated curriculum with social/digital media literary and big data analytics is becoming an interesting topic in communication education.

We welcome research papers on seven sub-themes to discuss new media and big data: new communication research paradigm; media industry change; news production and data journalism; media use and engagement; computational social science and communication research; health communication; and big data and communication education. We are looking forward to receiving abstracts for potential vibrant research presentations at this international conference and to welcoming you in Shanghai, China.

This conference aims to put Hong Kong and international postgraduate researchers into a dialogue around their current work on all aspects of Sociolinguistics and Discourse Analysis with a special focus on Multimodality and Mediation. The conference will include plenary lectures and workshops with two leading scholars in the fields of Multimodality and Mediated Discourse Analysis.

All registered participants will have their conference fees waived. All meals on the two days of the conference will be provided free of charge. The organizers cannot offer any funding towards travel or accommodation. For participants from outside of Hong Kong, a limited number of rooms at the HKU Guesthouse (Robert Black College) will be available at preferential rates on first come first served basis.
