Intercultural encounters accompanying the movement of individuals and groups receive a variety of expressions and call for a debate in an interdisciplinary context. The conference aims at investigating aspects of culture, language, media and literature in the context of a world made more mobile than ever before. The organizers of the conference wish to invite scholars in humanities and social sciences, esp. literature, linguistics, communication, folkloristics, media, cultural studies, humour studies, translation and interpreting, teaching methodology, to a discussion on the broad subject of cultural neighbourhood, especially related to: minority cultures and literature, migration and narration, the Other, autobiography and identity; communication styles, pragmatics of intercultural communication, communication in institutions, folkloric communication, ethnolinguistics; humour and irony in cultural context; cross-cultural aspects of translation and (language) teaching, English as an international lingua franca, language contacts, culture and the teaching of languages, global learning, innovation in education; images/discussions of culture in news media (print, broadcast and electronic); contemporary culture and media, images of culture/groups in media, transnational / transmedial cultural texts, cultural and linguistic globalization / localization.

CFP Transnational Journalism History (Netherlands)

The fourth annual conference on Transnational Journalism History is seeking papers that study historical transformations in journalism from a transnational perspective, discussing theoretical or methodological issues as well as empirical case studies from all parts of the world. Specifically, we invite contributions that consider:

– the transfer of norms, practices and textual conventions from one country/region to another and their consecutive adaptation in national contexts
– transnational networks of actors
– biographical studies of transnational agents such as journalists or publishers
– the transnational coverage of particular news stories
– transnational audiences
– the impact of (emerging) technologies on transnational journalism
– different media such as television, radio, newspapers or magazines, and the intersection between them

The Department of Communications and New Media at the National University of Singapore, together with Murdoch University, Singapore and Australia, welcome scholars from all disciplinary backgrounds to the 17th annual Chinese Internet Research Conference (CIRC), to be held in Singapore on Friday, 28 June 2019. The theme for CIRC 2019 is “Digital Cultures: Chinese Internet and Beyond”.

Papers or panel proposals that address the theme directly or broadly are welcome, as are presentations that are related to the economic, political, cultural, or social dimensions of internet use and digital cultures in China, as well as its reverberations beyond China. This means that presenters are encouraged to submit and share their research findings and ideas on the implications of digital cultures that are local, national, transnational, or global to China.

An international conference organized by the Communication, Culture and Diversity (CCD) network-based research group, School of Education and Communication, Jönköping University, and sponsored by the Swedish Research Council.

The MuDD2019 international conference will bring together international experts from across the global-North and the global-South with the intent of interrogating the continuing dichotomized situation (in particular in nation-states like Sweden) wherein mono-lingualism and mono-culturalism constitutes the norm and multilingualism and diversity are seen as the exception. MuDD2019 also has the potential to create new knowledge of relevance for present day challenges related to mobility, migration and communication across virtual-physical spaces. It will bring together senior and junior scholars from different research disciplines, including professionals from among other sectors the educational and cultural sectors, thus allowing for theorizing and bridging the dichotomies between monodisciplinary research areas and professional fields.

IADA 2019 invites papers that explore the various interconnections of dialogue, matter, matters of concern, and materiality. Proposals from any academic discipline addressing questions related to dialogue and dialogue studies are welcome. Proposals may also address (but are not limited to) any of the following sub-themes:

  • Discussing and/or applying descriptive methods to dialogue, e.g. conversation analysis, linguistic analysis, critical theory, ethnography, etc, in different contexts: pedagogical, mediation purposes, etc.

  • Relational ontology: interactions, relationality and materiality; human, machine, and technology interactions; technologies of dialogue

  • Dialogue and ‘othering’: the role of dialogue in constituting self, other, and group identity/ies.

CFP WCA/ABC: Global South and North (New Zealand)

ConferencesCall for Papers: World Communication Association (WCA) and Association for Business Communication (ABC) Conference: The Global South and North: Communication and Cultural Perspectives, July 8-12, 2019, Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand. Deadline: January 15, 2019.

The global South-North divide has been conceptualized in political, cultural, economic, and developmental terms. The North has traditionally been seen as more economically, technologically, politically, and socially developed as well as more industrialized. But the South has been linked with poverty, disease, political tyranny, and overall lack of development. Meanwhile, thanks to the internet and development of smart phones, the gap between the South and the North seems to have narrowed. Limits of time and space seem to no longer exist. People can now share similar experiences and communicate, no matter where they are. Global citizens believe the global community is where they would like to live, despite the many issues we have to solve. To explore the global issues of today, the WCA opens the 2019 conference to you. The WCA is proudly co-hosting this conference with the Association for Business Communication (ABC), which will be hosting the 16th Asian Pacific regional conference along with the biennial WCA conference.

CFP French Language Studies (UK)

ConferencesCall for Papers: Association for French Language Studies Conference: ‘Le français d’ici, de là, de là-bas’, 15-17 July 2019, University of Bristol, UK. Deadline: January 14, 2019.

It is perhaps inaccurate to refer to ‘French’ in the singular, as if to imply that the French language is a homogeneous monolithic object. Indeed, modern contemporary French varies and changes over geographical and social space and, while it may seem odd to refer to ‘Frenches’ in the plural, we must acknowledge at the very least that ‘French’ is made up of a plethora of accents, dialects, and varieties. This conference will consider geographical, social, and stylistic variation in French, as well as the implications of such research for pedagogy, language acquisition, and our understanding of the Francophone world in general. The organising committee welcomes abstract submissions on these and any other areas of French linguistics and French language teaching in Higher Education. Conference papers are welcome in either French or English, and abstracts should be written in the language of the presentation.  Speakers will be given 30 minutes for oral papers (20 minutes, plus 10 minutes for questions).
