The Department of Communication at the University of Utah invites applications for an Open Rank Tenure-Track Position: Director of the Master’s Program, University of Utah Asia Campus (UAC), effective July 1, 2024. This position requires full-time relocation to Incheon, South Korea. A PhD in Communication, or a terminal degree in an allied field, or equivalent professional and/or industry experience and status are required. Salary is dependent on qualifications, but minimum starting salary is expected to be $100,000 USD + administrative stipend, plus expenses. Tenure will be held on the Salt Lake City campus. Housing is provided for Korean non-nationals. Health and Retirement benefits will be provided.

They seek an administrator to direct the Master’s Program at UAC and teach graduate and undergraduate courses. Administrative experience, graduate advising experience, and graduate teaching are highly preferred. Applicants should have a broad understanding of the communication field and be able to articulate their research, teaching, and service interests as aligned with our current tenure-track faculty at the Salt Lake City campus. Professional and/or industry experience in strategic communication, advertising, public relations, marketing, journalism, media effects, and/or media studies is a plus.

The GAELFAM investigates the everyday linguistic experiences of families who reside in the Irish Gaeltacht and who use a language other than/in addition to Irish or English in the home. The PhD researcher will focus on adolescents who fit this profile and will carry out a number of tasks to enable the successful competition of their PhD thesis and viva voce examination. The PhD researcher will gain valuable skills in conducting ethnographic research in school settings, and will also present their research findings at a number of national and international conferences, as well as contribute to organising a conference at the University of Galway and a youth-led event, also to be held at the University of Galway. They will also contribute to scholarly publications and publications for a wider audience (e.g. blog posts). Garda-vetting will apply.

Call for Papers for a special issue of Journal of Global Diaspora & Media: Global South Diasporic Voices: Rethinking Praxis and Theory in Communication for Development. Deadline: for abstracts: 26 April 2024; for manuscripts: 19 September 2024.

Issue editors: Carolyn Walcott (Clayton State University), Maha Bashri (United Arab Emirates University), and Farooq Kperogi (Kennesaw State University).

The special issue aims to spotlight the crucial roles of diasporas from the Global South in shaping development narratives through information and communication technologies (ICTs) and beyond.

As the world witnesses significant shifts in global migration patterns, the voices of the diaspora emerge as potent agents in redefining the landscape of Communication for Development (C4D). This call seeks to explore how diasporic interventions challenge existing C4D paradigms by integrating indigenous knowledge systems and leveraging digital diasporas.

Editors invite contributions that:

  • Offer theoretical reconceptualizations of C4D within the diaspora and transnational contexts.
  • Provide case studies on the use of media and ICTs by diasporas in development, including social media’s impact.
  • Analyze the challenges and opportunities of digital diasporas in shaping development agendas.
  • Critically examine diaspora negotiations of identity, representation, and politics in media narratives around development.

Maria Flora Mangano: Seeds of Dialogue

NOTE: As someone who has received a set of the “seeds of dialogue” described here, this post is particularly meaningful to me. It’s a lovely gesture, and something that would be particularly easy for others to replicate.

This idea of a symbolic gift for students at the end of a course occurred to me in 2017. At that time, I was teaching transcultural dialogue to undergraduates, in addition to a course in communication of scientific research intended for doctoral students.

I prepared “seeds of dialogue,” as I called them, by using the seeds of seasonal fruit I had at home (such as oranges or apples), which I washed, dried, and stored. It was also a sustainable gift, as I packed the seeds using recycled materials: transparent cellophane and strand of raffia for the envelope, which I stapled onto cards made of reused wallpaper.

The intent was to wish for the students to continue to plant “seeds of dialogue” in the Other, as we had experienced during the course. The proposal was to place them beyond our class, and beyond the academic context, with the aim, far more broadly, to give these seeds a place in our everyday lives.

They are only seeds of fruit, but the meaning of the seeds as symbol is immediate: each of us, wherever and whenever, may begin to create a relationship with the Other by building a bridge, by planting a seed. .

The Alliance for Peacebuilding (AfP) is announcing an exciting opportunity for a new Policy and Communications Associate position that will be a key cross-cutting employee supporting AfP’s technical capacities and new Fieldbuilding Strategy. This position will oversee and coordinate the creation of communications content across AfP’s three technical capacities in (1) Partnerships & Convening, (2) Learning & Evidence, and (3) Policy & Advocacy. This position will also spearhead the design of reports, publications, media engagement, public and private events, social media, graphics, the AfP website, and others. In addition, the Associate/Senior Associate will support AfP’s Policy & Advocacy team in its efforts to elevate peacebuilding and conflict prevention in laws, policies, and foreign assistance. This position will strengthen the unity and effectiveness of the peacebuilding community’s policy voice by building strong and active relationships with policymakers and civil society allies. Candidates should have experience in strategic communications and policy, as well as be able to successfully self-start in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. The Associate/Senior Associate reports to the Senior Director of Policy and Advocacy.

German Institute for Global and Area Studies: Research Fellow – Religion for Peace (Germany)

Research Fellow: Religion for Peace: Investigating Messengers and Messages for Interreligious Peace, German Institute for Global and Area Studies, Hamburg, Germany. Deadline: 21 April 2024.

The German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA)/Leibniz-Institut für Globale und Regionale Studien is an independent Social Science research institute based in Hamburg. It analyses political, social, and economic developments in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, and links this knowledge to questions of global significance. It combines region-specific analysis with innovative comparative research on accountability and participation, peace and security, globalisation and development, and global order and foreign policies. The GIGA seeks to appoint a Research Fellow. It is a 75% position, with a contract of 2 years, preferably starting on 15 August 2024.

The successful candidate will work in the project Religion for Peace: Investigating Messengers and Messages for Interreligious Peace, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Religious leaders are active for (interreligious) peace in many contexts and, for example, use their rhetoric to advocate for peace. The effectiveness of religious leaders’ rhetoric depends on the interplay of religious leaders being the messengers and the contents of their words—the message itself. This project (re)tests the (comparative) effectiveness of religious leaders as peace messengers and effective content of peace messages. The project also examines effects of an intervention designed and conducted with a Togolese civil society organization that aims to promote interreligious cooperation.

NOTE: The GIGA strongly encourages concurrent work on a doctoral degree. The Research Fellow would become a member of the GIGA Doctoral Programme.
