Opera Connect: India is an online workshop sponsored by Opera North, Leeds, England, UK, with Camille Maalawy, 17 January 2023, Online. 

Are you curious about other musical traditions? Would you like to meet people from across the world in a friendly environment and discover new songs? Opera Connect online workshops look at different musical traditions. You will meet different artists who will share tunes and stories from their countries of origin.

Opera North is delighted to welcome Indian classically-trained singer Keertan Kaur Rehal. Keertan was one of Opera North’s Resonance Artists for 2019 with her project The Mango Tree. Why not come and sing along from the comfort of your home? Workshops are open to singers of all abilities. No prior musical knowledge is required. There is a minimal fee for participation.

Comics and Multiple Cultural Identities

Han, Dabin. (21 November 2022). COMIC: Korean American books inspired one artist to redefine her identity. National Public Radio.

In a story told entirely through comics, Davin Han describes her own identity journey she has followed, as a Korean American, moving between Korean, Korean-ish and American. She shows how important it was to her to find books by other Korean Americans. Among other insights:

What I’m learning is that I can’t choose between being Korean or American because they are not separable identities.

It is a relief to hear complicated answers to a question that has always been posed so casually.

This story would make a particularly accessible classroom resource for teaching about multiple identities. See also KC22: Cultural identity, KC105: Acculturation, and KC62: Diaspora for related discussions.

Leiden University’s Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) is inviting applications for a full-time Assistant Professor position in Conflict Resolution and International Organization. The successful candidate will have demonstrable research record in themes related to the vacancy and a strong teaching background in methods and research design as well as in topics related to the Institute’s Bachelor’s and Master’s programme offerings. The position is aimed at strengthening the Institute’s teaching, research and grant-acquisition capacities in a phase of growth and exciting interdisciplinary research opportunities.

The successful applicant will be part of an ambitious and dynamically growing Institute and is expected to:

  • conduct independent research in the fields of conflict resolution and international organization, including topics related to international institutions and global governance;
  • support the ongoing development and implementation of the ISGA’s research strategy by publishing in leading international outlets and by attracting research grants;
  • teach in the advanced MSc programme International Relations and Diplomacy;
  • teach in the MSc in Crisis and Security Management, or the minor in Global Affairs;

The School of Critical Studies seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Sociolinguistics based in the subject area of English Language & Linguistics, which provides world leading research in the analysis of speech and the use of digital technologies in linguistics. The postholder will contribute to, and expand on, the existing research strengths in the area of sociolinguistics, specialising in multilingualism, language attitudes, interactional sociolinguistics, amongst others. Applicants with experience in research with a qualitative orientation are particularly welcome. The successful candidate will have an excellent publication record and demonstrate the potential for attracting external grant funding. They will offer courses at UG and PG level, in addition to recruiting and supervising PhD students.

U Manchester: Translation Studies (UK)

Applications are invited for the post of teaching-focused Lecturer in Translation Studies, which is tenable from 15 January 2023 for a period of 6 months. The post-holder will be primarily responsible for convening, delivering and assessing a 30-credit course unit, ‘Translating for Business and Institutions 2’, which forms part of the MA in Translation and Interpreting Studies. They may also be required to contribute to other MA supervision, teaching and assessment activities on the MA programme. You must have a PhD or equivalent in translation or interpreting studies and demonstrable teaching experience in translation studies at university level in areas of relevance for this position. You must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to empathise with students. ​​​​​​​

Let’s Build a Roof Over the World: Art for Peace

Estonian art for peace is an exhibit created as part of the “Let’s build a roof over the world” project organized by the Fermata Arts Foundation, based in Avon, CT.

“Let’s Build a Roof Over the World” is an international project spearheaded by Fermata Arts Foundation, the Connecticut-based organization that promotes intercultural dialogue between New England states and post-Soviet countries. A total of 1,375 students and professional artists from 13 countries participated in this project, including Estonia, Moldova, Ukraine, the United States, Kyrgyzstan, and other post-Soviet countries. A total of 221 exhibitions have been organized in nine states.

Through the framework of social truth and the role of art in promoting peace, each school approaches the theme with a different focus. “The Peace in the World” is the theme of the current Estonian exhibit, which has been circulating throughout regional libraries. The previous exhibit from Moldova approached this theme through a mythological lens. An upcoming exhibit from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan will center on the theme of “Ideal Home” – older students have created architectural models of houses, and younger students will explore fairy tale homes.

From all Corners Podcast

From UC Berkeley’s I-House comes the storytelling podcast From All Corners. Featuring an array of I-House residents, the project was born of the notion that powerful stories can inspire intercultural learning and make friends out of strangers. Each episode is a jolt of empathy—spotlighting true stories about the people we meet, the heartbreaks we suffer, the lessons we learn, those frightful experiences that unravel us, and the moments of wonder that shape us.

Six episodes were produced between September 2019 and February 2020. Due to Covid, in March 2020, the podcast narrowed to a series entitled Under the Dome ” to help us feel the community of being under the I-House Dome — even if we’re now in different places across the globe.” Another 17 episodes were produced through May 2020, at which point the series ended.

This podcast would make a good classroom resource for teaching about intercultural communication generally, or intercultural dialogue specifically. See KC5: Intercultural Communication or KC1: Intercultural Dialogue, as well as other Key Concepts in Intercultural Dialogue published by this Center.

The Norwegian School of Economics (NHH) is pleased to announce a vacancy as PhD Research Scholar at the Department of Professional and Intercultural Communication within the field of Corpus-Assisted Discourse Studies (CADS). The PhD programme and the specialisation offered by the Department of Professional and Intercultural Communication aims to give dedicated students solid training in performing high quality research. The training is based on close cooperation with other national and international institutions offering similar programmes. The students must undertake relevant course work equivalent to 45 ECTS. Given the international focus of the department, the students are strongly encouraged to carry out some of their coursework abroad.

The research proposal should be related to Corpus-Assisted Discourse Studies (CADS), with a topic relevant to the research priorities of the department. Research proposals should include a sustainability perspective. Qualifying education should normally be a master’s degree in language/linguistics/communication studies. Emphasis will be placed on the quality of the research proposal. Some formal education in economics, business administration or other social sciences is an advantage.

The PhD programme at NHH is a four-year fully-funded programme, which combines an intensive course component with research and relevant work experience, preparing the school’s graduates for scholarly positions at recognised international institutions and positions in knowledge-intensive institutions and firms outside of academia. Former PhD graduates have been hired by renowned institutions such as HEC Paris, NOVA SBE, Tilburg University, Hanken School of Economics, Norwegian universities and business schools, as well as in the government, banking, finance and consulting industries.

The theme for the 2023 conference will be: Intercultural. Climate. Change. Organizers hope you will consider how your work contributes to conversations about changing intercultural climates, the effects of climate change on intercultural relations and relationships, and how intercultural relationships, identities, communication, research, practice, and so on are changing in this time of changing social and political climates around the globe. They also welcome papers and symposia proposals on all intercultural topics. (This is an in-person event.)
