The Associate Dean for Internationalisation and Global Partnerships (AD IGP) plays a pivotal strategic leadership role in advancing the international ambitions of IBSS, in full alignment with XJTLU’s institutional vision as “根深中国的国际大学,国际认可的中国大学”—a deeply rooted Chinese international university and a globally recognised Chinese institution. Reflecting IBSS’s mission to bridge the local and the international, this role is designed for a senior academic leader who can connect global expertise with local relevance, building partnerships that are globally impactful and contextually grounded.

At its core, the role is responsible for developing and maintaining a diverse and high impact strategic portfolio of international collaborations—including academic mobility programmes, institutional agreements, joint research, and co-delivered educational initiatives. These efforts aim to enhance IBSS’s global profile while also reinforcing its role as a connector between international networks and the Chinese education and business ecosystems. The Associate Dean will act as IBSS’s representative in high-level institutional dialogues abroad, cultivating relationships that position the School as a bridge between China and the world.

The Department of Applied Linguistics is a research-intensive environment with two MA programmes: the MA in TESOL and MA in Applied Linguistics (with a Specialisation in Multilingualism), which also contributes a Linguistics pathway on four UG programmes. The appointee will be expected to contribute to the department’s research profile and should have an excellent track record of publication in their research area, appropriate to their stage of career. An ability and willingness to contribute to or lead collaborative and interdisciplinary research projects would be a strong advantage.

In terms of teaching, the successful candidate must be able to contribute widely to the Undergraduate or Postgraduate curricula, including at least three from the following (either PG or UG):

  • UG: Introduction to Linguistics: Grammar, Introduction to Linguistics: Discourse, English as a Global Language, History of English, Sounds of English, Language and Society, Semantics and Pragmatics, Syntax, Psycholinguistics, and Language and Gender.
  • PG: Introduction to Multilingualism, Multilingualism in Society, Linguistics for Language Teachers, Methods in English Language Teaching, Principles of Course and Materials Design, Second Language Acquisition, Language Testing and Assessment, Speaking and Listening, and Research Methods. MA Dissertation (TESOL or MA Applied Linguistics).

In addition, the ability to contribute a new module in either Forensic Linguistics or Computational Linguistics would be an advantage. Staff typically teach 1-1.5module(s) per semester, depending on student numbers. The typical contact hours are around 6 hours per week. A contribution to academic administration will also be expected.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design/deliver Year 1 project-based module of the Global Citizenship and Research-led learning;
  • Design/deliver modules/activities of sustainable development education/entrepreneurship education/digital literacy education/social responsibility education/intercultural competence education;
  • Promote the innovative practices of learning and teaching via technologies such as AI, big data, etc.;
  • Conduct professional practices that contribute to students’ transition, transformation, and transferring of learning mode and skills;
  • Participate in the design and deliver of projects and activities of LIFE, including credit and non-credit modules, workshops, and seminars at both UG and PG levels;
  • Support projects and activities of LIFE according to the planning of the department and work with other team members actively and professionally;
  • Work closely with students to explore innovative practices for learning and teaching;
  • Supervise Master’s students for their thesis writing;
  • Provide academic advising to students.

The successful applicant will have a PhD, and be able to demonstrate appropriate professional experience. Applicants should have good teaching experience and evidence of the ability to produce high quality research publications. Applicants are expected to be able to teach in English, the language of instruction at the university. The successful appointee will be expected to teach; to undertake research in their area of specialisation; and to participate in the administration and development of the School of Film and TV Arts.

The School runs programmes in Communications, Digital Media, and Film and TV Production. Established in 2016 the School is new and growing rapidly. The School seeks to appoint a Lecturer/Associate Professor in Media and Communications with teaching to start in September 2017. The successful candidate will provide teaching across the department and will contribute in particular to the MSc in Media and Communications.

The Department specialises in applied linguistics and TESOL, English language, English literature, and communication and media studies. Successful candidates shall have, or expect shortly to receive; a PhD in a relevant area of applied linguistics and English language studies, and be able to demonstrate teaching experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in international English-medium institutional contexts. Candidates shall also be able to demonstrate an international research profile with a proven record of high quality research publications. Successful candidates will be expected to contribute to the delivery of both MA TESOL and BA Applied English programmes. Preference will be given to candidates who are able to design and develop courses in second language acquisition, discourse analysis, stylistics and English for Specific Purposes.

The department currently has 25 academic staff and over 500 students. XJTLU is a unique collaborative institution, the first and currently the only university in China to offer both UK (University of Liverpool) and Chinese (Ministry of Education) accredited undergraduate degrees. Formed in 2006, the University now has over 8,000 students studying on campus. The language of instruction in Years 2 to 4 is English. XJTLU aims to become truly research-led, and has recently committed significant investment into research development and the expansion of PhD student numbers on campus. The Department currently offers five undergraduate degree programmes, in English and Finance, English and International Business, English and Communication Studies, Applied English, and Communication Studies; and an MA in TESOL and an MSc in Media and Communication. A Masters in Translation is currently under development. The salary range for the position is 19,971 – 30,701 RMB/month (Lecturer), and 31,166 – 42,546 RMB/month (Associate Professor).
