The Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies at Illinois College announces a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the area of Intercultural Communication, to begin Fall 2012. The ideal candidate will also have experience in one or more of the following areas of study: business communication, persuasion, research methods, health communication, and/or another specialized area of expertise. As part of a 3-3 teaching load, the candidate will teach Intercultural Communication, multiple sections of public speaking, and one or more courses in the areas listed above. We will consider candidates who work from a variety of methodological and theoretical perspectives; with experience in either qualitative or quantitative analyses, or both. Applicants must have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, advising, scholarship, and service. Evelyn Ho Profile

ProfilesEvelyn Y. Ho (PhD, University of Iowa) is Professor of Communication Studies, Asian Pacific American Studies, and Critical Diversity Studies and a Faculty Chair of the Honors College at the University of San Francisco.

Evelyn HoBeginning with an understanding that communication is a cultural activity and that health care systems and beliefs are profoundly cultural, Prof. Ho’s teaching and research focus broadly on the intersections of health, culture and communication. Health care in the United States is increasingly confronted with a variety of domestic and international-based alternatives and complementary therapies to western biomedicine and her research studies the discursive construction of holistic, complementary, and integrative medicine especially in relationship to biomedicine.

A recent project called Integrative Nutritional Counseling combines Chinese medicine and Chinese medicinal foods principles with western biomedical nutrition for Chinese Americans with type 2 diabetes and heart health. Other recent projects include:

  • Discourse analysis of Chinese American patients (using English, Cantonese or Mandarin) and primary care providers discussing complementary and integrative therapies and/or mental health.

  • Understanding the use of informal/unlicensed Chinese medicine practices (such as foot reflexology, postpartum practices, Chinese medicinal foods) in Singapore

  • Systematic review of provider-patient communication about complementary and integrative health care.

Previous research has examined public health acupuncture clinics in Seattle and in San Francisco, the use of acupuncture and massage therapy use for HIV–related neuropathy, and patient education about how to discuss complementary and integrative medicine with doctors.

At USF Prof. Ho teaches courses in Communication and Culture, Ethnography of Communication, Qualitative Research Methods, Communication and Health Disparities, Complementary and Integrative Health, Sanctuary and Immigration, and Asian Pacific American Studies. She has been a guest/visiting professor at the University of Helsinki (2018) and the National University of Singapore (2015). In 2014, she co-taught USF’s first ever Pacific Islander course — the Davies Forum — Pondering Paradise: Contemporary Issues Through a Pacific Lens.

She has previously chaired both the Health Communication Division and the Language and Social Interaction Division of the International Communication Association and the LSI Division of the Western States Communication Association.

Marquette Asst Prof

The Strategic Communication Department in the J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication at Marquette University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor beginning August 20, 2012. The Diederich College of Communication includes majors in advertising, broadcast and electronic communication, communication studies, corporate communication, journalism, performing arts and public relations. Duties and Responsibilities: Teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses in the public relations field such as, Public Relations Writing, Multicultural and International Strategic Communication, Integrated Marketing Communication, Crisis Communication, PR Strategies, Emerging and Social Media, Digital Communication and Health Communication. Engage in a rigorous research program, advise undergraduate and graduate students and provide service as requested to the college and/or university.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ph.D. required. Applicants should have Ph.D. in communication or closely related field with knowledge base in public relations or strategic communication and demonstrated potential for teaching excellence and high quality research. Competence in digital technologies and social media and professional experience in the PR industry preferred. Ability to teach in advertising is a plus.

UNESCO and UNAOC have created the UNESCO UNITWIN UNAOC Network of Universities on Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue (“UAC-MILID”).

UAC-MILID specific objectives include:
*Act as a Observatory for critically analyzing: the role of Media and Information Literacy (“MIL”) as a catalyst for civic participation, democracy and development; for the promotion of free, independent and pluralistic media; as well as MIL’s contribution to the prevention and resolution of conflicts and intercultural tensions and polarizations.
*Enhance intercultural and cooperative research on MIL and the exchanges between universities and mass media, encouraging MIL’s initiatives towards respecting human rights and dignity and cultural diversity.
*Develop within the participant universities educational and media production practices that contribute to dissolving prejudice and intercultural barriers and favour global dialogue and cooperation among citizens as well as social and political institutions around the world. In addition to the international dimension, these practices will be reflected at the local level in the 8 cities or neighbourhoods in which the partner universities are located.
*Promote global actions relating to MIL (including adaptation of the UNESCO MIL Curriculum for Teacher Education and other relevant tools, publications, congresses, seminars, teaching resources, and faculty and students’ exchanges) that could contribute towards stimulating dialogue and understanding among people of and within different cultures and societies.
*Create a virtual centre to research on, and study and develop MIL initiatives aimed at the creation of projects and publications linking universities and research centres.
*Promote and support other global media initiatives that could reinforce civic participation through open, free and independent media and information systems that favour intercultural dialogue and cooperation.

Theatre as tool in ICD

CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS

Theatre as a Tool for Intercultural Dialogue
20-26 September 2011  Iİzmir, Turkey

This project will bring young people from diverse European backgrounds together to participate in an activity using Theatre Tools for Intercultural Dialogue. The primary focus of the Training will be analysing the topical subject of diversity and all its related issues. Activities will include working in groups and having a practical experience at international level.  At the end of course we will prepare a show to perform for public. Spain, Belgium, Turkey, Italy, Uk, Poland, Romania are our partner counties.  21 Participants will attend this project. We have 4 trainers from İtaly, Spain, UK and Turkey. This project has been funded with support from the European Commission. Turkish National Agency is general coordinator and supporter of  this projects.

Objectives:
– to raise debates and confrontations about the subject matter
– to introduce working methods using different experiences
– to know organisations from other European countries
– to create an atmosphere of mutual understanding between people from different cultures
– to develop innovative activities at local level

Date and Venue:  Our training is in Izmir. It is the 3th biggest city in Turkey. We will stay at a Deniz Atı holiday village on seaside of Eagen Sea.  Participants will be at hotel before 15.00  20 September  2011 . Participants will leave the hotel on 26 September 2011 after breakfast.

This project is organized by Youth for Art and INCA (International Network for Culture and  Art).

Euro-Med Seminar ICD

CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS

We are pleased to announce the Euro-Mediterranean seminar “Indicators for Intercultural Dialogue in Non-formal Education Activities”, organised in the framework of the partnership between the Council of Europe and the European Commission in the field of youth from 22-24 September 2011 in Mollina, Spain, during the 12th University on Youth and Development.

The participants of the seminar will be youth workers, trainers in non-formal education, educational experts and researchers, stakeholders, and youth policy experts from the Euro-Mediterranean region. All participants should:
Be interested and experienced in the topics of intercultural dialogue;
Be familiar with the intercultural dialogue aspects in non-formal education activities;
Be ready to contribute to the programme and reflections of the seminar;
Be able to work in English;
Be interested in the University on Youth and Development;
Be available for the full duration of the seminar.
Priority will be given to the participants/practitioners interested in contributing to the testing and evaluation phase of the project.

The Department of Communication at the University of Maryland, College Park, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor with a primary emphasis in the area of intercultural communication. The starting date for this position is August 23, 2012.

The successful candidate will demonstrate or show promise of significant research, have a high level of competence in undergraduate and graduate teaching, and be capable of directing graduate research in intercultural communication. In addition, it would be desirable for the candidate’s research to intersect with one or more of the department’s other research areas (feminist studies; health communication; media studies; persuasion and social influence; public relations; and rhetoric and political culture). Ability to teach communication theory and research methods is required, and teaching experience at the university level is highly desirable.

The Department of Communication offers B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees. Its program in intercultural communication was ranked 5th in the 2004 National Communication Association’s reputational study of doctoral programs.

Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship in Intercultural Studies

Saint Louis University, a Catholic, Jesuit institution dedicated to student learning, research, health care, and service is seeking applicants for a Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship in Intercultural Studies, to begin Fall 2011 which is a two-year position with the second year renewal contingent on a satisfactory annual review.

We are looking for a candidate whose scholarly program is focused on issues of interculturality, with a strong interest in relevant methodology and theory. Eligible applicants will have worked on topics that span more than one discipline in humanities and social sciences. A demonstrated facility with a second language, if related to the candidate’s research, is desirable. The applicant must have a Ph.D. in hand before the date of entry for taking up the post-doctoral position. You will work with a team of researchers on a project entitled “Multidisciplinary Approaches to the Study of Interculturality,” under the supervision and mentorship of the project director. In this role, you will be expected to produce an extensive article on a topic related to the project (to be considered for publication in the project’s jointly authored volume), as well as present a publishable paper at its planned conference in 2013.

You will also participate in Saint Louis University’s academic and intellectual community by presenting the results of your research at symposia, colloquia, and faculty seminars, and assist the team in organizational matters.

The University of Arts in Belgrade, Serbia, in cooperation with the University Lyon 2, France is organizing a joint MA programme in Cultural Policy and Management (Interculturalism and Mediation in the Balkans).
