U Edinburgh IASH Fellowships (UK)

“Fellowships“Senior Anniversary Fellowship, Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH), University of Edinburgh, UK. Deadline: 28 February 2019.

 

To celebrate their 50th anniversary year, IASH has created three-month Fellowships for the most promising scholars in the arts, humanities and social sciences. For 2019-20, they seek applications centered on the place of the humanities in the 21st century to take forward inquiry in a cross-disciplinary way, perhaps at the outermost disciplinary boundaries of the humanities, arts and social sciences. £10,500 bursary, plus travel grants.

In addition, IASH offers Environmental Humanities Visiting Research Fellowships, IASH-SSPS (School of Social and Political Science) Research Fellowships, and Digital Scholarship Visiting Research Fellowships.

 

Coventry U PHD Studentship: Does ICD Work in Fragile Contexts? (UK)

“Fellowships“Ph.D. Studentship, Coventry University (UK) / Deakin University (Australia): DOES INTERCULTURAL DIALOGUE WORK IN FRAGILE CONTEXTS? Deadline: 31 March 2019.

The successful applicant will spend 1 year at Coventry University, the second year at Deakin University and the remaining 1.5 years at Coventry University. Successful candidates will receive a full scholarship covering course fees and living costs. Students will study in both Universities and on successful completion will be awarded a PhD by both.

The Intercultural Dialogue (ICD) approach differentiates itself from other methods of engaging with diverse societies, principally by encouraging dialogue with the cultural ‘Other’ for its own sake, rather than being outcome focused. However, critics of ICD ask whether it is relevant outside of the European context where it was developed (Aman; 2012); and whether it is applicable in fragile contexts, where for example, there is conflict over sovereignty (Phipps; 2014). In recognition of such critiques this PhD explores the utility of ICD as a framework in a non-European / Western setting which is a fragile context and has a long standing disputed status.

The PhD candidate will conduct ICD workshops with youth belonging to stakeholder communities within the disputed region in order to explore the utility of ICD as both a) a research tool for academic exploration of community and stakeholder perspectives; and b) a framework for promoting inter-group dialogue between communities and stakeholders within fragile contexts. The student will be provided with extensive training and guidance on ICD by the supervision team and will work closely with a partner NGO within the setting, who will support with the facilitation of workshops for qualitative data gathering and participant observation.

Visiting Fellows: Communication & Media (China)

“Fellowships“Visiting Fellows Program (VFP) for Communication and Media Research, joint program between the National Communication Association and the Communication University of China. Deadline: February 1, 2019.

Fellows will serve one-semester appointments-in-residence. Fall Fellows will serve September1 through the end of December; Spring Fellows will serve February 1 through the end of May. During this one-semester residency, Fellows will not teach but conduct research on their proposed projects in line with the VFP’s annual theme, “Global Environmental Communication in the Age of Crises”, and they will be responsible for delivering four public talks, workshops, or other scholarly programs meant to advance NCA’s mission, the broad goals of the VFP, and the interests of intercultural collaboration. NCA and CUC will each select one Fellow for each academic term, so the VFP will consist of two Fellows each term (or four per academic year).

Japan Studies Institute Faculty Fellowship (USA)

The Japan Studies Institute (JSI) offers faculty members without prior experience in Japanese studies to learn from scholars, business leaders, artists and journalists about Japan, both past and present. JSI encourages participants to develop strategies for incorporating Japanese studies into courses on their campuses. The Institute involves intensive seminars, lectures, readings, films, and cultural activities related to Japanese history, culture, literature, government, business, language and education. Previous programs have included topics as diverse as wartime and occupation Japan, social relations and the changing role of women in Japan, Japanese foreign policy and regional relations, classical music, ikebana, calligraphy, survival Japanese, Japanese film in the classroom, and philosophical and religious traditions in Japan. The formal program is complemented by a number of off-campus and evening activities. Institute faculty will include scholars, representatives from the local Japanese community, artists, journalists, and government officials.  Most of the costs of the JSI are covered by a grant from the Japan Studies Institute endowment.

Aarhus Institute for Advanced Studies Fellowships (Denmark)

AIAS has up to 15 AIAS-COFUND fellowships available for the most talented researchers from around the world and within all research disciplines and topics. The scheme is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions (grant agreement no 754513) and Aarhus University Research Foundation.

Two types of AIAS-COFUND II Fellowships  

AIAS-COFUND Junior Fellowships for postdoctoral researchers with a career experience of 2-10 years. Duration from 12-36 months.

AIAS-COFUND Senior Fellowships for researchers with a career experience of 10+ years. Duration from 6-18 months.

 

CFP Madrid Institute for Advanced Study Fellowships (Spain)

“Fellowships“Call for Applications, Fellowships, Madrid Institute for Advanced Study (MIAS), Spain. Deadline: 11 December 2018.

The MIAS invites researchers of all nationalities. The MIAS regulations therefore require an open invitation for applications. Following acceptance through a strict selection process, residents are allowed full autonomy to pursue their research projects; albeit they are encouraged to interact with one another and with the scientific community locally, regionally and nationally.

The MIAS’s scientific community as such consists of 20 researchers in Human and Social Sciences, whose stay in Madrid varies from 3 to 10 months, as well as longer-term resident researchers. There is a monitoring committee to provide scientific follow-up for all MIAS residents and facilitate cross-disciplinary exchanges among all the residents by means of periodic meetings, in direct contact with the scientific communities at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and at Casa de Velázquez.

The annual call for applications will value the presentation of proposals that enhance the international dynamism of the UAM-CEI International Campus of Excellence, as well as Casa de Velázquez’s research guidelines. The annual call for applications consists in several programs divided between annual and short-stays.

U Westminster Global Professorships (UK)

The University of Westminster is now welcoming expressions of interest from outstanding international researchers not currently working in the United Kingdom to bring their research experience to the UK and the University as part of the British Academy’s Professorships Scheme.

Each four-year appointment is intended to be a complete project in itself and is expected to involve a specific research focus, although the Academy does not have a preferred model for the balance of time to be spent between research and teaching (which may vary over the course of the award and will depend on the UK host institution’s needs). Up to ten awards each year will be offered during the course of the programme.

IIASA Science Communication Fellowship (Austria)

FellowshipsThe International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) is currently accepting applications for its summer 2019 Science Communication Fellowship. Deadline: 11 January 2019.

The fellowship starts on 27 May and ends on 30 August. The fellowship covers the cost of travel to and from Vienna and the awardee’s home country at the beginning and end of the fellowship, as well as a modest stipend to offset living expenses during the period of the fellowship.

The science communication fellow will gain experience in communicating complex systems science for a general audience through a variety of platforms including blogs, website content, video, and articles for our magazine, Options. The successful candidate will work in the IIASA Communications Department, assisting with a variety of tasks including editorial work, web publishing, media relations, event coverage, multimedia, social media, and other communication activities. The fellow will also work closely with participants in the IIASA Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP), producing several pieces of work covering research from the program.

China Studies Institute Faculty Fellowship (China)

The China Studies Institute (CSI) Zhi-Xing China Academic Impact Fellowship Program allows faculty to learn from scholars, business leaders, and education administrators about Chinese civilization, history, language, business and education.

CSI offers college and university faculty members with limited or without prior experience in Chinese studies to learn about China, both past and present. The institute encourages participants to develop strategies for incorporating Chinese studies into courses on their campuses. The Institute involves three weeks of intensive seminars, lectures, readings, and cultural activities related to Chinese history, culture, literature, government, business, language and education. Institute faculty will include scholars, administrators, representatives from the local Chinese community, and government officials.

Polish Institute of Advanced Studies Fellowships (Poland)

The Polish Institute of Advanced Studies (PIASt) Junior and Senior Fellowship Programme offers residencies in all research areas of the social sciences and humanities, broadly defined. Fellowships run for the full 10-month period and the 5-month fall semester (October – February) or spring semester (March – July). For the 2019-2020 academic year, PIASt offers 12 fellowships (4 junior and 8 senior positions). The fellowships will begin in October 2019.
