This year’s Western States Communication Association conference theme is “Communication, Agitation, & Justice,” and the Intercultural Communication Interest Group invites artists, practitioners, activists, and scholars to engage this theme in both content and panel structure to encourage and challenge dialogue across the conference space. As we engage in advocacy within the communities in which we live, this year’s particular theme provides an opportunity to showcase how intercultural communication continues to play a vital role in the larger discipline. For example, we share mutual interests in the promotion of social justice, communicating across and beyond difference, and agitating policy and cultural changes through intercultural communication practices, theory, and methods. By inviting programming that answers the “so what?” question by fighting against systemic oppression and structural inequity at the intersections of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, nationality, ability, and more, we encourage submissions that draw from the rich epistemology of (inter)cultural and international communication research to engage work at multiple levels−local, global, international and transnational− and with a variety of tools (e.g., stories, narratives, performances, etc.). This theme invites a commitment to communication, agitation, and justice that should be embodied in academic work as a place of both scholarship and activism. This allows us to work with community members to create positive changes using the tools of reflexivity, critical literacy, listening, speaking up, alliance-building, and dialogue in multiple contexts, peoples, cultures, and various communicative spaces.

The Intercultural Communication Interest Group (ICIG) asks its members to consider how intercultural communication scholarship can serve as a form of advocacy by agitating towards social justice. In response to the conference theme, the ICIG invites papers, panels, roundtables, performative responses, and/or other aesthetic communication innovations. Programming that critically responds to the call by offering unique formats that reach out to other subdisciplinary strongholds within communication studies is encouraged. Additionally, programming that works at the micro, meso, and macro levels both in multicultural, intersectional, queer, and/or transnational ethnoscapes are further encouraged.

The SOAS World Languages Institute (UK), Mercator European Research Centre, the Interdisciplinary Centre for Social and Language Documentation, and the Plurilingualism Research Unit – treffpunkt sprachen (AT) cordially invite scholars, community organisations and community members to join the international conference on “Languages in an Open World” that will take place in Graz, Austria, November 20-22 2019, at the European Centre for Modern Languages of the Council of Europe (ECML).

The conference “Languages in an Open World” intends to bring together scholars from linguistics and related disciplines with an interest and expertise in language and globalisation, with a special focus on status and power relations between languages and their speakers and their impact and/or transformation in a world characterised by mobility, increased complexity, and diverse and dynamic formations of cultural, linguistic, and societal identities.

Language is a vital, but often underexplored, factor in the lives of migrants, immigrants and refugees. It has a direct impact on the experiences and choices of individuals displaced by war, terror, or natural disasters and the decisions made by agents who provide (or fail to provide) relief, services, and status. And, distilled through memory, it shapes the fictions, poems, memoirs, films and song lyrics in which migrants render loss and displacement, integration and discovery, the translation of history and culture, and the trials of identity.

This interdisciplinary, international conference on Language and Migration will place the role of language in the lives and works of migrants in sharp relief. In Part One, to take place in midtown Manhattan, participants are invited to consider how language differently affects the experiences of several populations:  permanently settled refugees and migrants; temporarily settled refugees and migrants; and people in transit. These populations, in turn, are variegated by age and gender, literacy and educational attainment, culture and religion, and the political, economic and cultural contexts in which they seek to settle. Part Two of the conference will focus on memory in the cultural work of migrants and immigrants. On Friday evening the conference will resume at Princeton University with a reading by eminent faculty novelists in the Lewis Center for the Arts, followed on Saturday by a full-day symposium on memory, language, and migration. To foster conversation across disciplinary borders, participants are strongly urged to attend both parts of the conference

Princeton’s interdisciplinary Research Lab on “Migration: People and Cultures Across Borders” comprises both humanists and social scientists; accordingly, they invite proposals from a wide variety of disciplines, including comparative literature, history, translation studies and philosophy; political science, economics, education, sociology, and law; sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, interlinguistics and forensic linguistics, among other fields.

Theme: Bounded Languages…Unbounded

Politics of identity are central to language change. Here, linguistic boundaries rise and fall, motivating the ephemeral characteristics of language communities. The Mediterranean and European region is one replete with histories, with power struggles, uniquely demarcating nation, ethnicity, and community…This year’s theme encapsulates the ongoing struggle throughout Mediterranean and European regions. As the continuous tension between demarcation, and the concurrent legitimization, of languages, language ideologies, and language identities, enters an era where new modes of interactivity require language communities to take on roles super-ordinate to the past, flexible citizenship now operates within, and not only across, language communities, to unbind languages, and to create new boundaries, unlike those ever seen throughout history.

The COMELA 2020 invites work which addresses the shifting boundedness of Language Communities of the Mediterranean and Europe. Papers and posters should acknowledge and decribe processes of language shape, change, and ideology, pertinent to social, cultural, political histories, and futures of Mediterranean and European regions, and by those working in Mediterranean and European regions.

CFP Sociolinguistics Symposium (Hong Kong)

As a premier gathering of international sociolinguists, this biennial event has emerged as a unique and innovative forum to develop and exchange new ideas, broaden the scope of the discipline, and create new academic networks. From its beginnings as a small meeting of UK-based academics in 1976, Sociolinguistic Symposium has grown into the largest sociolinguistic conference in the world.

Its Hong Kong edition will mark the conference’s first appearance in Asia. The theme of the conference is Unsettling Language. The contemporary world is an unsettled place due to numerous conflict zones, forced migration, economic imbalances and uncertainties, as well as ideological extremism resulting in (or caused by) unsettling language emanating from powerful people, political organizations, and the media. As a form of social action, this sort of language requires serious, critical consideration, assessment and counter-action.

Furthermore, the notion of ‘language’ itself is undergoing a critical reassessment in how it is being theorized. Language is increasingly understood as more than ‘just’ a set of linguistic resources. Its embodied nature, the materiality of its modalities (speech and writing), interaction with other modalities (sound, music, images, etc.), and with time and space, requires integration of broader contexts of analysis, multimodal data sets, and multidisciplinary approaches. We invite abstracts addressing the conference theme as well as other contributions focusing on current and innovative themes and theoretical challenges.

ICSI Regional Conference is the 6th bi-annual meeting of the Interpersonal Communication and Social Interaction (ICSI) section of ECREA (European Communication Research and Education Association). This year’s conference is hosted by Tilburg University, Department of Communication and Cognition, and will be held in Tilburg, the Netherlands.

The conference theme this year is “Re-Connecting”. We want to connect scholars from the different sub-disciplines of interpersonal communication and social interaction, for example workplace interaction, communication in interpersonal relationship, impression management, interpersonal and health communication. Connecting our insights from different fields may inform our own research, provide creative ideas for future research, and help theory development. Moreover, the theme reflects the fact that our mediated and unmediated interactions are increasingly connected and integrated. As advanced communication technologies increasingly become part of our everyday experience, we are forced to revisit and connect theories of online and offline social interaction.

The ICSI Regional Conference 2019 provides an opportunity to share our ideas, theories and research about interpersonal communication and social interaction across our different specializations. We call for paper and panel proposals from any communication or communication-related discipline and methodology that address the section’s themes.
