Call for Papers for the 11th issue of Journal of Transdisciplinary Peace Praxis. Deadline: 30 September 2023 for abstract; 15 December 2023 for full paper. 

The Journal of Transdisciplinary Peace Praxis is now accepting submissions for the Eleventh Issue (Vol. 6, No. 1) and welcomes R&R content, book reviews, and articles related to peace and human flourishing. Articles and reflective pieces that clearly embrace transdisciplinary methodology and embrace under-addressed concepts and neglected world regions will be privileged by the editorial team.

IMéRA Fellowships 2024-5 (France)

Call for applications: IMéRA Core Fellowships 2024-5, IMéRA Institute for Advanced Study at Aix-Marseille University, France. Deadline: 16 October 2023.

For the year 2024-25, Iméra, the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) of Aix-Marseille University, is opening 14 resident fellowships ranging between 5 and 10 months, targeting academics and/or artists. The fellowships are distributed over four programs (Arts & Sciences: Indisciplined Knowledge; Interdisciplinary Explorations; Mediterranean; Necessary Utopias).

Prerequisites common to all available fellowships and that must be taken into account before the eligibility criteria specific to each fellowship include:

  • An active knowledge of French and/or English (written and spoken) is essential.

  • Candidates commit to participate in the activities planned with the other fellows and the scientific team of Iméra.

Eric de Rosny and the Necessary Tradition-Modernity Dialogue in Africa

Perret-Clermont, A. N., Morerod, J. D., & Blanc, J. (2022). Cultures et guérisons: Éric de Rosny–L’intégrale [Cultures and healings: The complete Éric de Rosny]. Livreo-Alphil. (boxed set in 3 volumes)

Eric de Rosny was a French anthropologist and Jesuit who started as a teacher and then devoted his life to further intercultural understanding between Africa (and in particular Cameroon) and the French speaking “West” (in particular France). He published several books (Healers in the Night, the most famous, has been translated into English and several other languages). He paid careful attention to local traditions, in particular to traditional healing practices and their embeddedness in local worldviews, knowledge and creeds (including witchcraft). He invested a lot of energy to protect traditional healers. But he was also concerned to further the understanding of present day rapid transformations of all kinds (for example: growing cities, the desire of young people to migrate, development of new churches). His papers were dispersed across many (often small) journals. Now that his papers have been collected and sorted by chronological date, they offer the opportunity to follow him step by step, documenting and sharing his experience, as he tries to enter this world in Douala, and then sees himself adopted by the local community and integrated as one of the “wise men” (beyum ba bato).

The Hugh Downs School of Human Communication (HDSHC) in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences on the Tempe Campus of Arizona State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position as Assistant Professor who will be required to teach in-person on the Tempe campus with an anticipated start date of August 2024. Applicants who are or will be at the Assistant Professor level in August, 2024 are encouraged to apply.

Applicants’ scholarship and teaching should focus on intercultural communication. Salary will be competitive based on qualifications. We encourage applications from scholars who work at the intersection of intercultural communication and Indigenous/ Black/ Disability/ Latinx/ Queer studies, and/or are invested in one or more of the following: transnational, international/global, interracial, interethnic, and/or intergroup communication.

The Communication Department at Utah Tech University is seeking an enthusiastic and well-qualified individual for the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Communication, with an emphasis on intercultural communication, to begin Fall 2024 semester. Successful candidates will be comfortable teaching intercultural communication courses, along with various other intersections of identity-based communication (e.g., gender, globalization, and criticism). Special consideration will be paid to those who specialize in rhetorical/critical methods. The successful candidate also will coordinate the curriculum for the department’s foundational courses in the intercultural communication area. Tenure track faculty at UT teach a 4/4 teaching load. While the primary considerations for tenure at UT are currently teaching and service, having an active research trajectory with publications and/or conference presentations is a component of tenure and promotion.

The successful candidate will be expected to represent the full scope of the interdisciplinary and internationally oriented field of Ethnomusicology in research and teaching. The tasks of the professorship include the training of students and doctoral candidates in the field of musicology as well as the contribution to the academic administration of the Institute of Musicology and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Participation in joint research activities of the University, the Faculty or the Fächergruppe will be expected as well as the successful acquisition and implementation of third-party-funded projects. During this workshop, the Educators’ Guide to Depolarisation will be presented, as well as navigating through some of its exercises, designed to encourage and equip teachers with methods for facilitating difficult conversations on controversial or polarising topics with their students. In addition, educational materials from the project Depolarisation Activism for Resilient Europe (DARE) will also be presented.

Maja Nenadovic is a practitioner and educator with 20 years of experience of working in the civic education, critical pedagogy, human rights education, Holocaust education and youth civic engagement fields. Next to designing original civic education and human rights education materials, she coordinated and facilitated several long-term civic education projects in the region of Western Balkans.

The NECE (Networking European Civic Education) Campus is an all-year-round online event series that provides a platform for educators, policymakers, civil society actors, and experts in citizenship education to learn, and exchange practices, research, tools, and methods related to democratic engagement and civic education. The series includes a diverse set of presentations, workshops, and capacity-building activities. It’s organised into functional and thematic tracks to cater to the needs of civic educators, covering a broad range of topics.

THE CIVICS is a a pan-European NGO with hubs in Bonn, Sofia and Zagreb with the goal of strengthening the democratic competences, self-efficacy, and resilience of citizens across Europe.

International Translation Day 2023

EventsInternational Translation Day, established by the United Nations in 2017, occurs on 30 September every year. English PEN is holding an event this year to celebrate.

Join English PEN in London or online from anywhere in the world, 12–7pm BST on Friday 29 September 2023 for a day of workshops, talks and networking opportunities, culminating in a “2023 State of the Translation Nation” plenary discussion. Featuring 30 leading translators, writers, publishers, agents, booksellers and language experts, this year’s sessions include an “ask me anything” with five UK publishers, workshops on negotiating contracts and translating sensitive work, and talks on rights, events and reviews.

International Translation Day is an opportunity to pay tribute to the work of language professionals, which plays an important role in bringing nations together, facilitating dialogue, understanding and cooperation, contributing to development, and strengthening world peace and security. This is an appropriate occasion on which to thank all of the translators who have taken time from other responsibilities to help CID prepare translations of our publications into a remarkable 32 different languages. We could not do this without you!

UNESCO Intercultural Competencies for Peacemaking VI

Sixth Regional Expert Consultations on Intercultural Competencies for Peacemaking: North America, UNESCO, 29 September 2023, 15:00 to 17:00 GMT+2, (Paris, France, but online).

UNESCO’s Social and Human Sciences Sector has launched the UNESCO Series of Regional Expert Consultations on Intercultural Competencies for Peacebuilding. Through these consultations, UNESCO aims to explore the potential of the development of intercultural and socio-emotional skills to serve as an enabler for peace in fragile, conflict-affected and post-conflict contexts.

The sixth, and final, regional edition in a series of online expert consultations will focus on North America and will be held on Friday 29 September 2023, from 15:00 to 17:00 GMT+2 (via Zoom). The sixth edition will bring together experts and practitioners to discuss the main challenges to intercultural understanding in the region, the role of intercultural skills in building trust among different parties, and ways of improving intercultural competence to better promote peacebuilding efforts, paying particular attention to the role of women and youth.

CFP ESTIDIA 2024: Exploring Real-life, Fictional and Virtual Dialogue (Lithuania)

Like previous European Society for Transcultural and Interdisciplinary Dialogue (ESTIDIA) conferences, the 2024 event puts dialogue and dialogic forms of communication in the spotlight, as front and centre of all forms of human communication. This time the focus is on exploring real-life, fictional and virtual dialogues in terms of similarities and differences, overlaps and complementarities, constancy and change. To understand the context-driven, situation-based and culture-specific impact of dialogic communication patterns, it is essential to examine in situ instantiations of dialogue as social interaction practice, as jointly steered activity, as philosophical or scientific method of inquiry, as rhetorical process of co-reflection, as pedagogical approach, as problem-solving tool, as mechanism of ethical and political scrutiny (Ilie 2022). Theoretical and empirical studies have explored dialogues in various forms of verbal communication: oral and written, private and public, multi-level (between two or several interlocutors, with or without an overhearing audience), synchronous and asynchronous (e.g., face-to-face vs. computer-mediated).

Within the broad theme of the conference, participants are invited to explore a range of questions concerning dialogue genres, dialogue practices and/or dialogue strategies, in relation to roles and goals of dialogue participants, to convergent or divergent speech acts, to common ground and shared knowledge.
