U Amsterdam: Professor of Europe in a Global Context (Netherlands)

The Department of History, European Studies, Religious Studies, and CEDLA-Latin American Studies of the University of Amsterdam is looking to appoint a full Professor of Europe in a Global Context. This professorship in European Studies focuses on Europe and its relations in a global context. This chair will strengthen the interdisciplinary profile of European Studies in the Faculty of Humanities by focusing on Europe’s connections, interdependence and post-colonial legacies with other world regions. In doing so, it will also study the long-term changes in global dynamics and their political, cultural and social consequences for Europe’s position in the global world. Possible research themes could be (though are not limited to): security; environmental issues; transnational mobility (such as migration or transatlantic trade); EU foreign policy; European institutions and legacies of imperial structures; Europe as a global actor in the field of cultural developments and social movements. Expertise in the impact and interactions between the European continent and other continents is an explicit requirement of this professorship. Teaching and research of this professorship involve both European and non-European perspectives on the possible themes listed above, critically (re)assessing and contributing to an understanding of Europe’s interests, interdependencies and conflicts with other world regions. The candidate is expected to take a leading, proactive role within their interdisciplinary chair group, the department and the research school, and in research priority areas of the Faculty.

Call for Contributing Authors: Draft Global Constitution (Netherlands)

Call for contributing authors of a draft Global Constitution, 2024-2029. Deadline for 1st round of submissions: 1 February 2025; and 2nd round: 1 February 2026.

Distinguished Professor Joyeeta Gupta of the University of Amsterdam, and winner of the Spinoza Award 2023, is undertaking a research project to write a Global Constitution. The aim of this draft Constitution is to identify rights and responsibilities for all within the context of the Anthropocene. It aims to promote social wellbeing and environmental prosperity within an equitable world.

If you want to be a contributing author, write a 1000 word essay on what a 21st century global constitution should include. All serious essays will be taken into consideration. CFP Diasporic Heritage & Identity (Netherlands)

Call for Papers: Memory Studies Association’s Annual Conference on Diasporic Heritage and Identity, 22-23 June 2023, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, Netherlands. Deadline: 31 March 2023.

In the interdisciplinary vocabulary of heritage and memory studies, the concept of diaspora continues to hold a pivotal role. This conference sets out to explore (self)representations of diasporic heritages and identities: how diasporic subjectivities and communities forge means of belonging and connection to nations, (im)material objects or space. Conceptualisations of diasporic heritage and identity can be expressed through a variety of narrative, mediatic, artistic and memorial strategies. This conference aims to provoke discussion and improve understanding of how these diasporic identities come into being, evolve and are performed through different heritage domains.

Rather than seeing diasporic heritages and identities as those with a nostalgic, romantic longing for the past, the conference seeks to stratify the range of positive or negative emotions and memory narratives that can emerge in diasporic communities. What narrative choices do diasporic individuals and communities adopt to define and challenge essentialised conceptions of heritage, identity, homeland, home and home-making? What counts as heritage, and how do diverse diasporas respond to, represent and perform their identity through the ever-changing cultural and global contexts?

This conference also aims to explore discourses of diasporic heritage, which correspond to the plethora of media, museological, political, historical and journalistic narratives and literary texts that structure a public and common understanding of identity. How does this discourse interact with (post/de) colonial narratives, xenophobic and right-wing movements, migration, displacement, conflict and transnationalism? How might repressive and authoritarian regimes impact diasporic identity expression?

Organizers encourage contributions from diverse historical and geographical contexts and invite proposals for special events such as panels, screenings, performances, exhibitions, etc.

The Amsterdam School of Regional, Transnational and European Studies (ARTES) currently has a vacant Postdoc researcher position as part of the broader field Cultural Heritage and Identity. Within this field the focus is on material and immaterial heritage, including digital Humanities and on Cultural Heritage and societal changes. You will be part of an interdisciplinary research team that collects and analyzes diaries of ordinary people of the 19th and 20th centuries who wrote about their daily lives in Amsterdam. In the light of Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary in 2025, the team investigates what diaries can tell us about lived and narrated experiences of Amsterdam as a multicultural city.

The Department of Media Studies is looking for an Assistant professor in Media and Culture who will bring to the position an innovative research agenda and relevant teaching expertise in cultural approaches to media. We are looking for a candidate with a strong research profile in media in film, television and cross-media studies.

The selected candidate will teach courses in the BA programme in Media and Culture, as well as in our MA programmes in Film Studies, Television and Cross Media Culture, and the Research MA Media Studies. Ideally, the candidate will be able to teach courses across a range of media, in particular television, film, and digital media, as well as their intersections.
