U Manchester Postdoc: World Literature (UK)

As an impressive early career academic, you’ll recognise that securing a Presidential Academic Fellowship at the University of Manchester will empower you to unlock your potential. In addition to a good salary for the duration of your Fellowship, you’ll receive several thousand pounds per annum for research support costs and access to key technology platforms. Your time during this award will be initially dedicated to research, with no or minimal teaching in the first year, and minimal teaching in the second year. Thereafter teaching would increase with each subsequent year of the fellowship. You can look forward to mentoring and assistance in winning external funding and awards.

As a Presidential Academic Fellow, you will join us at an exciting moment. In 2018 we are launching a new programme in World Literature. It will build on our strength in languages and literature, and on current expertise in literary theory, translation and intercultural studies. You will make a vital contribution. We will expect you to be a specialist in any central aspect of world or comparative literature. Ideally you’ll demonstrate expertise in non-western areas and bring to the role a strong profile in theory and methods.

Ariane de Rothschild Fellowships 2018

FellowshipsSince its inception in 2009, the Ariane de Rothschild Fellowship has been passionately committed to diversity, the promotion of cross-cultural and religious understanding, and the respect for human dignity. In a world where divisive forces polarize people and communities, these values are ever more urgent and vital. Deadline: March 4, 2018.

There is already a large amount of interfaith initiatives but little focus addresses interreligious and cross-cultural relations from a social innovation and business-driven perspective. AdRF strongly believes that entrepreneurs and social innovators can make a huge impact on their environment and in bridging to other communities.

The Fellowship focuses on entrepreneurs from North America and Europe, especially from Jewish and Muslim communities, who demonstrate a proven commitment towards inclusion while at the same time strengthening the sustainability of their organization.

In particular, the Fellowship is looking for applicants:

  • who demonstrate convincingly their potential for both economic self-sufficiency and social impact;
  • with at least a tested proof of concept or (even better) a solid track-record in developing a socially impactful business in wide-ranging sectors ( housing, food, education, art, health, environment, technology…) ;
  • and a commitment to empower under-served communities, reduce isolation and build collaboration with society at large.

The AdR Fellow is a visionary leader who challenges retrenchment and fear of the Other. She/he endeavors to make a real impact through developing innovative solutions and promoting inclusive collaboration.

The modern world is interconnected, mobile, multilingual and diverse. Linguistic diversity however does not indicate linguistic equality. On the contrary, the linguistically diverse nature of contemporary societies has implications for social justice, with potentially differential access to resources and the public sphere. In this context the politics of language are a significant factor for the promotion of social cohesion. Research has repeatedly shown that linguistic and ethnic minorities are disadvantaged in interaction with institutions. This two-day conference brings together scholars and practitioners from different professional and disciplinary backgrounds to discuss the role of language as a key factor in globalised societies.

The conference will be followed by a public summit focusing on the relationship between language, translation, social mobility and social cohesion. Participants will include scholars from the Humanities and Social Sciences as well as representatives from the voluntary sector, the creative industries, non-governmental organisations and policy makers.

We invite contributions which encourage interdisciplinary dialogue between scholars and practitioners in sociolinguistics and applied linguistics, translation studies, modern languages, sociology, health, legal studies and other areas in which language behaviour and language politics play a key role both as research objects and professional practices.

The Arab uprisings of 2011 have awakened interest in studies of cultural creativity and transformations across different historical epochs in the Middle East and North Africa region. However, despite the expanding scholarship, there is a significant gap in knowledge about the diverse cultural histories of the region. The little work there is remains trapped within the narrow Western-centric premise of liberal and modernisation theories that presuppose linear models of cultural, creative and political innovation.

UC London Postdoc: Multimodal Communication (UK)

PostdocsResearch Associate in Multimodal Communication, University College London – UCL Division of Psychology and Language Sciences – Experimental Psychology. Deadline: 21 December 2017.

Applications are invited for the post of Research Associate in the Institute of Multimodal Communication, located within the Experimental Psychology Research Department, UCL. The project, funded by a ERC grant awarded to Gabriella Vigliocco, investigates the role of multimodal cues (such as gesture and eyegaze) in language learning and processing. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and implement multimodal computational models to be used to predict behavioural and neural responses. The appointee will also be expected to contribute to the writing of manuscripts and presenting the data at international conferences. Strong support for personal and professional development will be available. This post in funded for 2 years, in the first instance.

Applicants must hold a PhD, or have submitted their thesis, in Experimental Psychology, AI, Computer Science, Cognitive Science, or Linguistics, and have computational experience. The ability to work as part of a research team is essential, as is the ability to problem-solve in a technical setting. Programming skills are essential.

The Language Policy Forum 2018 invites scholars, practitioners and other stakeholders to take stock of what language policy means in times of growing diversity. We are especially interested in presentations that discuss dilemmas (language-related problems in the world) and hopes (possible solutions, perhaps as a result of applying research findings).

Language policy permeates all domains of life, from the workplace, to the home and family, to schools, government, and other institutional settings. It materialises as something that enables some people to participate in these domains of life, and constrains others. The BAAL Language Policy group exists to enable dialogue on all areas of language policy research. We therefore encourage theoretical, methodological, and empirical contributions from fields such as (but by no means limited to): sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, political philosophy, economics, education, globalisation, and migration. As well as examining diversity within human populations, we encourage discussions of our own diversity of research practices: topics and data, methodologies, and practical applications. We also encourage pedagogical submissions, exploring innovative approaches to the teaching of language policy in higher education.
