University of South Florida Communication Postdoc in Global Change in a Dynamic World, 2014-15

The Department of Communication at the University of South Florida announces its participation in USF’s Postdoctoral Scholars program in the social sciences and humanities, with the theme “Global Change in a Dynamic World.”   Postdoctoral Scholars are expected to (a) contribute to one or more of the priority goals of USF’s strategic plan, (b) work closely with distinguished faculty, (c) participate in  interdisciplinary and programmatic seminar series, (d) teach two courses over a twelve-month period, and (e) continue to build an independent research record and engage in publishing refereed articles and creative scholarship.

Appointments will begin August 11th, 2014, contingent on available funding, and be continued for a maximum of 2 years, contingent upon satisfactory performance. The salary is $40,000 per year. Applicants must have earned a doctoral degree in communication, or an affiliated program, no earlier than 2011 and successfully defended their dissertations by May 1, 2014.  The doctoral degree must be conferred prior to the first day of employment.  (Applicants must receive their doctoral degree from an institution other than USF.)

The Communication Studies Department at Northeastern University (Boston, MA) invites applicants for a post-doctoral teaching associate position. Responsibilities include teaching Public Speaking and/or Quantitative Research Methods, along with advanced courses in Argumentation and Debate, Communication and Gender, Global and Intercultural Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Organizational Communication, Rhetorical Criticism, and Social Movements. The position carries a 3-3 teaching load with the possibility of summer teaching.

We are seeking a post-doctoral researcher specialising in the history of technology for the ADAPT project led by Professor John Ellis. This five-year project will research the history of the technological arrays involved in television programme production, concentrating on the users and the role played by technologies in shaping programmes. The researcher will pay a key role in managing and shaping ADAPT (The Adoption of new Technological Arrays in the Production of Broadcast Television) which is funded by the European Research Council with a budget of €1.6 million.

The researcher will take responsibility for producing an account, mainly from written sources, of innovations in film and video technologies (mainly in the UK) from 1960 to the present. The researcher will also co-ordinate the interviewing of TV professionals and the filming of extensive reconstructions of working practices.

The successful candidate should hold a PhD in the areas of either television or the history of technology.  They should also have experience and skills in written archive.

This is a full time post, available from 1st August 2013 or as soon as possible thereafter for a fixed term period of five years. The post is subject to a signed contract from funder. This post is based in Egham, Surrey where the College is situated in a beautiful, leafy campus near to Windsor Great Park and within commuting distance from London.

U Lugano (Switz) postdoc

The Institute of Communication and Health at the University of Lugano (Università della Svizzera italiana), Switzerland invites applications for a Post-doctoral Fellow position in the Faculty of Communication Sciences. Funding is provided through research grants from the Swiss National Science Foundation focused on addressing problems arising from limited health literacy and patient empowerment focusing particularly on misuse of prescription medications (P.I.: Dr. K. Nakamoto) and vaccination refusal (P.I.: Dr. P. Schulz). The Fellowship is available for three years and salary is competitive and dependent on experience and qualifications.

We are particularly interested in applicants with backgrounds in communications, psychology, and related disciplines. Application review will begin April 15th, 2013 and continue until the positions are filled. The new Fellow will be joining an active research group including three core faculty members, four post-doctoral fellows, and eight current Ph.D. students. The Institute of Communication and Health has a growing international reputation for its research on health communications and has active collaborations with several universities in Switzerland, the European Union, and the United States.

Our themes this year are Digital Humanities and Medical Humanities. Fellows will be appointed to the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) or the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (WKWSCI).

SBS Diversity Postdoctoral Fellowships

The Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences Diversity Postdoctoral Fellowship Program in the College of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University supports promising scholars who are committed to diversity in the academy and to prepare those scholars to enter tenure track faculty positions. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from individuals who are members of groups that historically have been underrepresented in the American professoriate.

Fellows will be affiliated with one of the eight academic units of the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences: Anthropology, Economics, Geography, Communication, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Speech and Hearing Science. The Division also houses six interdisciplinary research units: the Cognitive Science Center, the Center for Cognitive and Behavioral Imaging, the Criminal Justice Research Center, the Center for Human Resource Research, the Center for Urban and Regional Analysis, and the Initiative in Population Research. Fellows may also have the opportunity to participate in the activities of the Kirwan Institute for Race and Ethnicity, a multidisciplinary center founded jointly by the Divisions of Social and Behavioral Sciences and Humanities; and the College of Law.

Eligibility: Applicants must have completed all requirements for a doctoral degree in the social sciences by August 2013. Preference will be given to individuals who are within five years of their degree. Applicants must be committed to an academic career. Applicants must be citizens of the United States.

Awards: Up to three fellowships will be awarded. The appointments are intended for two years, with re-appointment for the second year contingent upon a successful performance review.  The appointments will begin September 1, 2013. The fellowships provide a $40,000 annual stipend, university medical benefits, and some support for travel and research expenses.

Areas in which post doctoral scholars might work include (but are not limited to) sustainability; sustainable development; hazard and disaster management; climate change; population changes; technology and information issues; communication and language development; cultural diasporas; ethnicity, gender, and aging issues; cultural heritage and histories; citizenship; identity; health, economic, education, and environmental disparities; political economy; ethics; human rights; animal rights; peace and conflict studies; injury and violence; security and surveillance issues. Specific research and geographical areas are open, and applicants may consider both past and contemporary perspectives.

Appointments are for full time employment (40 hours per week), will begin August 5th, 2013, and be continued for a maximum of 2 years contingent upon satisfactory performance. The salary is $40,000 per year and the University contributes to a health insurance program for postdoctoral scholars and their dependents (up to $6,000). Support for travel to academic conferences will be available. Scholars are responsible for their relocation and housing expenses.

The Center for Strategic Communication (CSC) and the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication at Arizona State University are pleased to announce a new Postdoctoral Fellowship program beginning in May 2012.

Postdoctoral Fellowship
A postdoctoral fellowship will be awarded beginning in the May/June 2012 time frame. The appointment is for full time employment (40 hours per week) for 18 months.  Renewal for up to two additional 18 month periods is possible, contingent on additional funding by the sponsor and satisfactory job performance. Salary is $50,000 and the University offers subsidized health insurance. Support for travel to conferences will be available. Fellows are responsible for relocation and housing expenses. Fellows will support a research project sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) studying the persuasive effects of narrative.

Required Expertise
Applicants must have relevant expertise in persuasion and social influence, communication, experimental design, and advanced statistical analysis.

Desired Expertise
Relevant expertise or experience in one or more of the subjects of social/cognitive neuroscience, strategic communication, counter-terrorism, social psychology, and/or narrative persuasion, are desirable.

Responsibilities
Postdoctoral scholars are expected to carry out the research plan and fulfill the goals established with their supervising faculty member, Dr. Tony Roberto; to assist the supervising faculty member and other Principal Investigators in fulfilling the requirements of the grant in a timely manner; to communicate regularly with the supervising faculty member and other members of the research team; and to notify the faculty member of any change in research plans.
