Oslo Metropolitan U: PHD Fellowship (Norway)

The PhD position is part of the project “Sustained employment of ‘hard-to-place’ citizens in small and medium sized enterprises: A mixed-method study in Norway and the Netherlands” (ENGAGE). The project is financed by the Norwegian Research Council and Oslo Metropolitan University, and it will run from September 2020 to August 2024.

The project will study employer engagement to promote sustained employment of people with work impairments or disabilities in small and medium sized enterprises. The project is interdisciplinary and finds inspiration in social policy and active labour market studies, Human Resource Management and organization studies, governance studies and studies vocational and occupational rehabilitation.

Oslo Met U: PHD Fellowship: Journalism & Media Studies (Norway)

The Department of Journalism and Media Studies (IJM) offers a 3-year PhD fellowship position. The successful applicant will enroll and participate in the doctoral program in library and information science at the Faculty of Social Sciences. She/he will also be a member of one of two research groups at IJM: INDEX or Digital Journalism. The position will be closely connected to one of two international research projects financed by The Norwegian Research Council:

  • Understanding Youth Participation and Media literacy in Digital Dialogue Spaces (U-YouPa)
  • Source Criticism and Mediated Disinformation (SCAM)

The PhD project is to be designed and conducted in a way that contributes significantly to the project that the successful candidate will be a part of. Applications can either be directed to the U-YouPa or the Scam project (see descriptions below). The applications will be ranked by an external evaluation committee. The position will fall to the applicant with the top-ranked application, given that – after an interview round with the person and the other leading candidates – the candidate is found to be best suited to fill the position.

U Neuchâtel PHD Candidate Positions: CA/Interactional Linguistics (Switzerland)

FellowshipsThe Centre for Applied Linguistics at the University of Neuchâtel (Switzerland), member of the Competence Centre CRIS (Centre for Research on Social Interaction) is inviting applications for two PhD-candidate positions (= two 50% doctoral assistant positions) in Conversation Analysis / Interactional Linguistics.

Start date: October 1, 2017
Duration: 4 years

The successful candidate should hold an MA degree in Linguistics (or an equivalent degree), be trained in conversation analysis and/or interactional linguistics, and motivated to develop an original PhD thesis project in either one of these fields. He or she should show an interest in contributing to one of the Centre’s main research areas (interactional competence, second language talk, grammar-in-interaction). He or she should have an operational mastery of French (or develop such a mastery
within one year), allowing him or her to interact with students and colleagues and to participate in data sessions where French conversational data is being analyzed.

U Tübingen PhD Position & Postdoc: Comparative Social Policy

The newly established Chair of Comparative and Applied Public Policy at the University of Tübingen invites applications for two positions:

1. PhD Position in the area of comparative social policy or social rights of EU migrant citizens. In addition to pursuing her PhD project, s/he will provide limited teaching and research assistance.

Essential requirements:
• Excellent undergraduate and graduate (master level) degree (preferably political science or social/public policy)
• Interest and knowledge in the politics of comparative social policy research or migration and welfare state research
• Excellent intercultural communication skills.Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Excellent communication, presentation and writing skills in English and German are desirable.

2. PostDoc Position in the area of comparative social policy or social rights of EU migrant citizens. The PostDoc will contribute to the research within the research areas of the Chair of Comparative and Applied Public Policy. S/he will also be given the opportunity to develop and pursue her independent research and contribute to teaching.

Essential requirements:
• PhD in a social science discipline (preferably political science or social/public policy).
• Demonstrable interest and knowledge about migration and social rights.• Detailed knowledge of EU social policy, especially as it relates to EU migrant citizens.
• Experience of conducting qualitative research, including document analysis.
• Experience of managing research from the beginning stages through to publication.
• Excellent organisational and time management skills.
• Excellent computer and internet skills, including the use of online databases for literature searches: Endnote or other bibliographic software.
• Excellent intercultural communication skills.
• Proven ability to liaise with a range of different stakeholders.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Excellent communication, presentation and writing skills in English.

Digital Arts & Humanities PhD scholarships U Coll Cork (Ireland)

University College Cork invites applications for the first round of scholarships in the four-year structured PhD programme in Digital Arts and Humanities (DAH) co-ordinated with an all-Irish university consortium. Candidates will pursue their individual research agendas within the program, based on projects developed from proposals which they provide during the application process.  Deadline for early acceptance: 15 March 2014. What is DAH?
The ever-evolving developments in computing and their performative and analytical implications have brought about a quantum leap in arts and humanities research and practice. Digital Arts and Humanities is a field of study, research, teaching, and invention at the intersection of computing and information management with the arts and humanities. The DAH Structured PhD programme has developed a research platform, structures, partnerships and innovation models by which fourth-level researchers can engage with a wide range of stakeholders in order to contribute to the developing digital arts and humanities community world-wide, as participants and as leaders.  Currently the program includes a vibrant community of 50 researchers throughout Ireland.

Programme Structure
Candidates will complete core, training and career development modules, including main modules shared across the consortium and others institutionally-based. The overall aim of the taught modules are threefold: 1) to introduce students to the history and theoretical issues in digital arts/humanities; 2) to provide the skills needed to apply advanced computational and information management paradigms to humanities/arts research; 3) to provide an enabling framework for students to develop generic and transferable skills to carry out their final research projects/dissertations.

Year 1 of the four-year programme includes core and optional graduate education modules delivered in Cork, Dublin, Galway and Maynooth. These modules provide a grounding in essential research skills and transferable skills together with access to specialist topics. In years 2 and 3 work on PhD research projects is supplemented with access to elective modules. Year 3 features practical placements in industry, academic research environments or cultural institutions.

University College Cork has a strong track record in Digital Humanities and has been a pioneer in the development of digital tools for language study and historiography. The College is strong in all disciplines of the Humanities, with a particular concentration on Irish and European studies. The Digital Arts and Humanities program currently has 46 students from around the globe, studying topics ranging from Renaissance networking to eighteenth-century country houses, from modern performance art to Irish diaspora music performers in the USA and their stories. Aarhus PhD scholarship

PhD scholarship in the field of the history of cross-media with focus on the world wide web and its relation to one or more other media types, primarily radio or tv. The Graduate School of Humanities, Aarhus Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University, in collaboration with the State and University Library, invites applications for a 3-year PhD scholarship in the history of cross-media with focus on the world wide web and its relation to one or more other media types, primarily radio or tv starting on 1 September 2011. Candidates who are awarded the scholarship must commence their PhD programme on 1 September 2011.

The PhD scholarship will be financed by the Aarhus Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University, and the State and University Library. The PhD scholarship is advertised within the field of the historical interplay of media. Scholarship about the interplay of media (cross-mediality) is an emerging field within media studies, but especially the number of historical cross-media studies is very limited. With this PhD-project we wish to further historical studies of the interplay of media. Despite the fact that the history of cross-mediality is by and large unchartered, the phenomenon itself has a long history, and with the advent of new media types within the last 10-15 years (eg. internet and mobile media) the media interplay has grown. The project must be historical and it should focus on one or more of the following points: theoretical and methodological issues, institutions, production, content and forms of expression, reception, technology, and social use. The project should benefit from the existing collections of media content at The State and University Library, primarily the national internet archive Netarkivet as well as the collections of radio and television. The State and University Library wants to further research projects which shed light on how research accross the librarie’s media collections can be undertaken.
