The Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion at Lancaster University is seeking to appoint a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Race, Religion and Society. This is a full time, indefinite post, to start 1st June 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. Constance Mbassi Manga Profile

ProfilesConstance Mbassi Manga earned her Ph.D. from Lancaster University, UK, and wrote her thesis on Camfranglais in use by diasporic Cameroonians living in Western cities, from a sociolinguistic and ethnographic perspective.

A French native of Cameroonian origin, she was raised multilingual and has been working in the field of language for 30+ years, in various capacities (from working as a freelance translator and interpreter, then heading her own translation agency, and later as a Team Lead/an Account Director in Marketing Communications). Moreover, she spent her childhood in a highly multilingual country (Cameroon, where over 250 languages are spoken), speaking 4 languages (2 African languages, English, French) from birth, learning a 5th (German) from the age of 10. She has always been fascinated by language practices and by the unique and powerful link that people draw between the language(s) they speak and who they are.

In terms of academic study, she was introduced to the study of multilingualism and sociolinguistics during her Masters at Kings College London; her Masters thesis focused on ‘Language Practices of Francophone Cameroonians in London.’ Since that time, she has been interested in language practices of non-European background adults in diasporic contexts, and how these tie in with ideologies of language, home and ‘belonging’.

Lancaster U: Postdoc on Biases in AI (UK)

BIAS is an interdisciplinary research project funded as part of the Canada-UK Artificial Intelligence Initiative (UKRI and multiple Canadian Funding Agencies) to improve scientific understanding of gender and ethnic biases in the increasingly digitalised and AI-driven labour market processes of job advertising, hiring and professional networking; and developing insights into how such biases and attendant inequalities may be mitigated. Through collaboration with academics from the disciplines of Organisational Management, Sociology, Computer Science and Data Science, and with industry partners in the area of AI protocol development, these insights will drive the development of a new Responsible AI Development Protocol. The post is advertised for 24 months. The academic partners in the project are Lancaster University (lead institution), Essex University (UK), and Alberta University (Canada). You should have a PhD in a topic related to information systems management, the development of socio-technical systems, labour relations, and/or human resources management.

    This PhD provides an exciting opportunity to participate in a rich exchange of intellectual perspectives relating to the Institute’s disciplines, while focussing on the research theme “Transnationalism, Mobility & Borders”. The PhD research will use practice-based and/or critical research on pressing contemporary issues such as migration and refugeeism, racism, xenophobia, violence and populist politics, postcolonialism and decolonization, globalization and inequality, transport, technology and mediation. The Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts (LICA) incorporates Art, Design, Architecture, Film and Theatre. We are open to proposals for projects that are either broadly situated within any of the five disciplines or that cross disciplinary boundaries.

Lancaster U: Research Associate Cinema Memory & Digital Archive (UK)

We are seeking to appoint a Research Associate in Film Studies, Media Studies, English, History or a related discipline in the Humanities and Social Sciences to work on the AHRC-funded project ‘Cinema Memory and the Digital Archive: 1930s Britain and Beyond’ (CMDA). This is a 35-month full-time post.

The project team is Annette Kuhn (QMUL), Richard Rushton (Lancaster University), and Sarah Neely (Stirling University), and the project is based at Lancaster University. Among other things, CMDA will properly organise and store, as well as develop a website for, the ‘Cinema Culture in 1930s Britain’ archive currently stored at Lancaster University Library. The project also involves a number of research and public engagement events relating to archives, cinema memory, and audience research.

Lancaster is searching for a postdoctoral fellow in sociology and/or media and cultural studies to assist Professor Beverley Skeggs in the development of a new research centre in the field of inequalities.

You will be able to demonstrate both outstanding research potential and experience in administration (building profile) and collaborative team working. You will be expected to pursue a high-profile research agenda, generate and support bids for external research funding and produce publications. You will also have an opportunity to supervise BA and MA dissertations, PhD theses and contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate modules (supported by existing staff and balanced with the context of other workload priorities).
