7th LRI Workshop: Language & Belonging (Italy)

ConferencesCFP 7th Annual Language, Region, Identity Workshop for Early Career Researchers: Language & Belonging, Academy of German-Italian Studies, Villa San Marco, Merano, Italy, 6-7 June 2024. Application deadline: 15 January 2024.

Following the successful workshops in Merano/Meran (Italy) in 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, and in Innsbruck (Austria) in 2016, the 7th workshop for early-career researchers of the linguistic colloquium Language, Region, Identity (LRI) will be hosted again at the Villa San Marco, Merano/Meran (Italy). The workshop, jointly organised by a team from six universities and research centres in Austria, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland, aims to foster scientific exchanges within the Alpine region and beyond by offering a forum for discussing current and recently concluded projects. The workshop will feature oral presentations of 20 minutes with a subsequent discussion time of 20 min.

Each Linguistic Colloquium workshop has a specific topic of interest. The 7th edition will address the topic of language and belonging. Despite often being equated with the notions of identity and citizenship, the notion of belonging can capture various different ways in which people may belong and form emotional attachments. For several decades now, different fields of linguistic research have tackled issues in relation to belonging with different theoretical and methodological orientations. From variationist sociolinguistics, which has attempted to work out how certain linguistic features pattern around people’s belonging to certain places, social classes or genders, research on language and belonging received important contributions from orientations such as Sociolinguistic Ethnography or Discourse Analysis that have conceived of belonging as a resource that people employ strategically to construct, claim or resist forms of social inclusion or exclusion.

Organizers welcome contributions that deal with language and belonging in relation to various intertwined social categories and groups (genders, social status, (sub)cultural groups, nationalities, professional groups, etc.) and investigate:

  • how belonging is expressed, perceived, negotiated, resisted and contested,
  • how categories and groups of belonging form, change and dissolve over time and in different spaces,
  • how belonging links to authority, ownership and power,
  • how the relation between language and belonging can be conceptualised and tackled methodologically.

The workshop languages are German, Italian and English.

MOOC Teaching and Learning in Multicultural Contexts (Italy)

“MOOCs”Teaching and Learning in Multicultural Contexts MOOC, created by Politecnico di Milano, Italy. Opens 8 May 2023 with free access until 5 May 2024.

The growth of human mobility together with globalization are shaping the demographics of many societies and of many interactive contexts, including new ways of learning and of working modalities. Thus, the possibility of facing intercultural relationships, even without moving, is today very frequent. And in the academic contexts, the internationalization of higher education makes the issue of teaching and learning in multicultural contexts, whether in person or online, relevant and essential to be learned and managed effectively.

This MOOC is divided into six weeks, with an estimate of 2-3 hours of time per week. It is addressed mainly to university teachers, with the aim to enhance their intercultural and global citizens’ skills and practices, so they can consciously foster the same skills in their students. It is open to anyone who is interested in understanding cultural diversity, thus to better live together and collaborate in multicultural contexts. It is taught in English, and it is offered without charge.

One of the instructors will be Maura di Mauro, affiliated with CID, who developed it for the Politecnico of Milan and for Somali National University.

Maria Flora Mangano: Saturday Morning (Intercultural) School

Guest PostsSaturday Morning (Intercultural) School. Guest post by Maria Flora Mangano.

NOTE: Maria Flora Mangano has previously written about dialogue as a space of relationship (2020, 2018, 2017, 2014) as long-term followers of this site will remember.

Since the end of 2021, I have been involved in an after-school activity for 4 to 12-year-olds. This volunteer work supports pupils doing their homework once a week, on Saturday mornings. This activity was created by a teacher at the beginning of the current school term, in October 2021, and it takes place in a parish of the city center of my town, Viterbo, near Rome. The initial aim was to reach non-Italian children from the city center, which is mostly inhabited by non-native families. In a short time, additional children arrived from different zones of the town and the surroundings.

What the children experience at home, with relatives and friends of their parents’ culture, often coexists, interacts, and enriches – we may say “is in dialogue” – with what they experience at school, as well as in this after-school activity. At the same time, their daily sharing with Italian and non-Italian people (peers, teachers, or neighbors, for instance) feeds their knowledge, and it frequently provides precious input to their families. Some, in fact, help their parents in improving their understanding of the Italian language, in talking, reading, or writing; others assist Italian people (even us) to better understand their parents’ and family’s needs.
