The Faculty of Social Sciences, Institute of Political Science, University of Tuebingen is seeking to fill one vacancy in the research cluster on Peace and Conflict Studies/International Relations from 1 February 2025 one PostDoc Position in the area of Peace and Conflict Studies. The PostDoc will contribute to research within the areas of conflict analysis and post-conflict peace building. S/he will also be given the opportunity to develop and pursue her independent research and contribute to teaching. The teaching load is 4 hours per semester and includes introductory modules in International Relations as well as seminars in conflict research and quantitative methods. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the administration of the research cluster.

This search is for a Post-Doctoral Researcher interested in conducting independent research on ethical issues related to migration policy making. The topic should fit broadly within the thematic scope of the project The Ethics of Migration Policy Dilemmas. Candidates should submit a brief outline in their application defining the topic they want to research about and explaining in which way their topic relates to the aims of the Dilemmas project. In particular, they welcome applications by researchers that have recently finished their PhD and who want to use the time to publish one or two articles out of (or as a follow-up to) their dissertation work, as well as to prepare a new research proposal for external funding (for example by the Austrian Science Fund’s ESPRIT program, the Austrian Academy of Sciences’ APART program, or the European Union’s Marie Curie program).

Early Stage Researcher (PhD Student), Department of Migration and Globalisation. Deadline: 25 September 2024.

This position begins with a two-month Visiting Research Fellowship dedicated for drafting a PhD Proposal. Upon successful evaluation, it transitions into a three-year fixed position within the ERC Starting Grant project “MixedRivals”, funded by the EU. The PhD candidate will play a pivotal role in the MixedRivals project, primarily focusing on the data collection related to de facto (forced) migration policies, supporting qualitative interviews, and assisting with survey design and analysis. This position offers a unique opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research at the intersection of (forced) migration and conflict studies.

Voltaire Prize for Tolerance, International Understanding and Respect for Differences 2025 (Germany)

In 2025 the University of Potsdam will be presenting the eighth Voltaire Prize for Tolerance, International Understanding, and Respect for Differences. Each year, the University of Potsdam awards the prize to one young scholar who has made an important contribution to the social dialogue on peace, international understanding, and tolerance, or who has campaigned for freedom in research and teaching or the right of free expression. A panel of judges selects the prizewinner from among the nominations submitted.

The winner of the Voltaire Prize will be honored in January, 2025 at the University of Potsdam New Year’s Reception. The prize amounts to €5,000 and is financed by the Friede Springer Foundation. Nominations for the Voltaire Prize must be submitted by third parties or organizations. Self-nominations are not possible.

The Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg (HWK) promotes excellent science through fellowships for outstanding researchers from all over the world. It additionally supports the engagement with scientific research and its role in society through fellowships for artists and authors. The HWK is an independent Institute for Advanced Study and a non-profit foundation of the states of Bremen and Lower Saxony and the city of Delmenhorst. It cooperates closely with the universities in Bremen and Oldenburg and other scientific institutions in the Northwest region.

The applicant (m/f/d) should have an excellent, relevant doctorate in the field of intercultural communication, in particular from a social or cultural science perspective or in related disciplines (e.g. sociology, political science, social or cultural geography). He/she should be able to represent the field of migration research/migration studies with a focus on intercultural communication in an outstanding manner, both in terms of expertise and methodology. The German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA)/Leibniz-Institut für Globale und Regionale Studien is an independent social science research institute based in Hamburg. It analyses political, social, and economic developments in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, and links this knowledge to questions of global significance. It combines region-specific analysis with innovative comparative research on accountability and participation, peace and security, globalisation and development, and global orders and foreign policies. The GIGA seeks to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (M/F/D) at the GIGA Institute for Latin American Studies

Applications are invited for a full-time position, with an initial contract of three years and the possibility of another three years after successful evaluation and depending on the availability of funds. The successful applicant should start as soon as possible. The successful candidate will work on Latin America’s political, social and/or development issues and/or regional cooperation. Themes of interest would be, among others, security and violence, climate change and environmental issues, and development and inequality. The candidate’s work should be situated within the GIGA’s overall research agenda, contributing both to theoretical and empirical knowledge creation, and be linked to one of the GIGA’s four Research Programmes. German Institute for Global and Area Studies: Research Fellow – Religion for Peace (Germany)

The German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA)/Leibniz-Institut für Globale und Regionale Studien is an independent Social Science research institute based in Hamburg. It analyses political, social, and economic developments in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, and links this knowledge to questions of global significance. It combines region-specific analysis with innovative comparative research on accountability and participation, peace and security, globalisation and development, and global order and foreign policies. The GIGA seeks to appoint a Research Fellow. It is a 75% position, with a contract of 2 years, preferably starting on 15 August 2024.

The successful candidate will work in the project Religion for Peace: Investigating Messengers and Messages for Interreligious Peace, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Religious leaders are active for (interreligious) peace in many contexts and, for example, use their rhetoric to advocate for peace. The effectiveness of religious leaders’ rhetoric depends on the interplay of religious leaders being the messengers and the contents of their words—the message itself. This project (re)tests the (comparative) effectiveness of religious leaders as peace messengers and effective content of peace messages. The project also examines effects of an intervention designed and conducted with a Togolese civil society organization that aims to promote interreligious cooperation.

NOTE: The GIGA strongly encourages concurrent work on a doctoral degree. The Research Fellow would become a member of the GIGA Doctoral Programme.
