I served as a Fulbright Fellow for the fall semester of 2000 through the end of the spring semester of 2001 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Although I applied for a teaching fellowship, I included scholarly plans in my application and I conducted research while serving in Russia.

I found the application process pretty straightforward.  My impression is that they are looking for scholar-teachers who have a great interest in travel and other cultures. I also believe that (at least when I applied) they were interested in people who were flexible and willing to adjust to the dynamics of other places and peoples. Finally, I think they value people who are interested in a true exchange, who are not only interested in learning something new but in sharing alternate ways of being, thinking, and doing with others.  My teaching (especially of argumentation and debate) and my scholarship (which involved ethnographic interviews) required my student and faculty hosts to adjust their thinking about higher education and research. However, I also took great care to learn from them and to absorb and appreciate the culture that surrounded me.

My primary assignment was at St. Petersburg State University in the Department of International Journalism, although I am more a rhetorical scholar than a mass media or journalism scholar. I was not able to secure a sabbatical from my home institution because the application process at my campus was so different from the Fulbright application process. However, I was able to get educational leave without pay and health insurance through COBRA (the cost of which was reimbursed by my institution when I returned). I deducted all of my work-related living and transportation expenses and as a result paid less in tax than I normally would. My wife quite her elementary teaching job and joined me on the trip. In the end, the trip reduced our income but it was definitely worth it. I rank my experience as a Fulbright Scholar the third most significant experience of my life (behind my education and my marriage/children).

There were plenty of challenges during my time in Russia and some strange miscommunications, but it was all part of the rich variety of experiences I had during that year. As a result of connections with the state department and various educational and cultural organizations, I had the opportunity to teach in many cities outside of St. Petersburg. I taught college students, high school students, journalists, other college faculty, elementary and secondary teachers, and community members. I taught in gymnasiums, churches, public libraries, community centers, hotels, and (of course) college buildings. I enjoyed a great deal of travel by train to countries including Finland, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, and others.

I also received a Fulbright-Hays Fellowship to Ghana, but that is a whole different story. It was a month-long study trip, so I was more a student and researcher than a teacher. But it was an awesome experience as well!  I encourage anyone to consider applying.

Fulbright Award Opportunities in Communication

The Fulbright Scholar competition for academic year 2016-2017 is now open. Specific opportunities in Communication are available this year in Ghana, Finland, Swaziland, Bulgaria, and Ukraine, but there are another 400 opportunities for which Communication scholars can potentially compete, since many leave the specialization open. The current competition will close on August 3, 2015. A description of the activities of some of those who have completed Fulbrights in Communication has previously been posted to this site. Fulbright deadline nearing

The deadline for Fulbright Core applications for Academic Year 2015-2016 is August 1st, 2014.

This year’s competition includes 584 awards.  Of these,  419 are All Discipline awards and are open to applicants from virtually any discipline – from Computer Science to Art.  Scholars and professionals from post-docs to emeriti are able to apply for programs all over the globe.

CFP Fulbrights 2015-16

The 2015-2016 Fulbright Core U.S. Scholar Program competition is now open.

The Fulbright Scholar Program offers teaching, research or combination teaching/research awards in more than 125 countries for the 2015-2016 academic year. Opportunities are available for college and university faculty and administrators as well as for professionals, artists, journalists, scientists, lawyers, independent scholars and many others.

Of the 583 awards being offered this year, there are over 64 awards available in the field of Communications.  Moreover, there are 371 All Discipline awards that welcome teaching and/or research proposals in any area of study, including interdisciplinary projects. These awards are offered in various regions around the world.

In order to meet the changing needs of academia and develop new options to accommodate better the interests and commitments of today’s scholars, the program has introduced several innovations to the 2015-2016 program, including: Fulbright Flex Awards, Fulbright Postdoctoral/Early Career Awards, Salary Stipend Supplements, and Teaching English as a Foreign Language Awards.

The application deadline to the Fulbright Scholar Program for US Faculty and Professionals for 2012-2013 is August 1, 2011.

The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program offers 225 teaching, research or combined teaching/research awards in Communications. Faculty and professionals in communications also can apply for one of our 186 All Discipline awards open to all fields.

The Fulbright Scholar Program and Humphrey Fellowship Program are administered by the Institute of International Education’s Department of Scholar and Professional Programs, which includes the Council for International Exchange of Scholars and Humphrey divisions.

The competition for 2012-13 Fulbright Scholar grants is now open. The application deadline for most programs is August 1, 2011. U.S. scholars and professionals can learn how to present their credentials at www.iie.org/cies.

Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence

Institutions are now invited to apply to the Fulbright Scholar-In-Residence Program.  The deadline is October 17, 2011. The S-I-R Program brings scholars from abroad to teach at U.S. colleges and universities, which can help internationalize curricula and campuses.

The Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence (S-I-R) Program assists U.S. higher education institutions in expanding programs of academic exchange. By supporting non-U.S. scholars through grants for teaching at institutions that might not have a strong international component, both the U.S. institution and the scholar grantee benefit. The Fulbright European Union Scholar-in-Residence (EU S-I-R) is a subset of the S-I-R Program that focuses specifically on strengthening expertise in European Union affairs by bringing scholars and professionals from the European Union to U.S. campuses.

One of the few Fulbright programs that serves institutions, S-I-R gives preference to Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-serving institutions, Native American tribal colleges, community colleges and small, liberal arts institutions. There are many opportunities for larger institutions to partner with preference organizations. Your institution is invited to learn how S-I-R can help advance its international presence, assist in faculty and curriculum development, and diversify the educational experiences of its students, scholars and surrounding community.
