Education in Global Perspectives is a book series launched by the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) and SUNY Press. They publish cutting-edge scholarship, examining key issues in the field of comparative and international education. With a concerted focus by the series editors to support early career researchers to publish their first monograph, the series will situate these contributions alongside the work of more established scholars.

The series welcomes contributions from early career to more established researchers. They invite a wide range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives rooted in comparative and international education and global studies in education. With a focus on inclusion, the series encourages proposals from scholars of diverse backgrounds and contexts around the world.

Books in the series may employ global, cross-national, regional, or other comparisons of educational phenomena. They may conduct quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods analyses; they may feature multi-sited ethnography; in-depth or comparative case studies; trace phenomena historically across sites, scales and systems; or be theoretical, philosophical, or conceptual studies.

Call for New Editor: Comparative Education Review

Professional OpportunitiesCall for New Editor and Editorial Team of Comparative Education Review (a CIES journal). Deadline: 7 October 2022.

The Comparative and International Education Society (CIES), through the Standing Committee on Publications, calls for proposals for an editor(s) and editorial team for the Comparative Education Review. The new editor or coeditors will assume a five-year term, beginning on July 1 2023, and with responsibility for CER issues beginning in February 2024.

Proposals from the prospective editor/co-editors are encouraged to address: Their vision for the future of CER and its intellectual support of CIES membership and comparative and international research on education in general. A proposal should also present ideas for special issues, forums, debates, and innovative ways to disseminate the journal’s content including on social media platforms, create opportunities for mentorship of junior scholars as well as strategies further to increase CER’s scholarly impact. The proposal should include a description of the proposed editorial team and explain how it will ensure diversity of intellectual perspectives in the field, maintain the methodological strength of CIES scholarship, and support representation of current and emerging content areas and regions of the world.

The Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) 2023 theme is Improving Education for a More Equitable World. Educational improvement is not merely a technical term, evidenced by the emerging, fast-growing, and interdisciplinary field of educational improvement studies. It constitutes a powerful approach and a dynamic process to advance education, through which reality and uncertainty are examined and problems are tackled. It varies across educational levels, forms, and contexts, including but not limited to equity, inclusion, diversity, quality, effectiveness, and sustainability. Each deserves stronger policy actions and more integrated theories and applications, requiring capacity- and community-building, a systemic approach, and multi-perspective inquiries.

Comparative and international perspectives are essential to fulfilling the dream of educational equity. How should we critically look at and meet desired outcomes across time and space? In what ways may micro, meso, and/or macro educational strategies, structures, and processes be improved along with their environments? How do we know through rigorous methods that we ARE making progress responsively? What changes can bring about responsible and sustainable advancement in learning, teaching, and schooling? What implications may these changes have on individual systems, contexts, and the already vulnerable planet? And how may our endeavors help redefine comparative and international education in a way that reconnects it with contextualized educational policy and practice?

CFP CIES 2022: Illuminating the Power of Idealism (USA Hybrid)


Call for Papers: CIES: Illuminating the Power of Idea/lism, Minneapolis, MN, USA with a hybrid design, April 18-22, 2022. Deadline: October 27, 2021.

The Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) 2022 theme Illuminating the Power of Idea/lism arises from the intersection of two immutable realities of our time and the impact both are having on the field of comparative and international education. The first is the global experience with the COVID-19 pandemic. The second is the rise of nativism and fundamentalism representing both ideological rigidity and political divisiveness. The CIES 2022 theme seeks to find ways to address these challenges by bringing forward new ideas with a sense of idealism in the work we all do as educationists.

In planning for CIES 2022, the hope is to gather in person after a three-year gap, with a theme grounded in the context of time, place, and possibility. The context of time refers to the global pandemic that has upended the practice of education for learners in all environments. The context of place refers to Minneapolis, a city at the crossroads of global and local, a place of refuge for new arrivals to the U.S., but also at the forefront of racial justice protests since the 2020 murder of George Floyd. The context of possibility returns to the notion of ideas where at this time and in this place, organizers seek to foster dialogue, while anticipating gathering as practitioners, academics, and students – indeed, a global community of idealists.

The application deadline to the Fulbright Scholar Program for US Faculty and Professionals for 2012-2013 is August 1, 2011.
