US-Japan Leadership Program 2024/25 (Japan/USA)

USJLP is the flagship program of the United States-Japan Foundation. It launched in 2000 with the purpose of developing a network of communication, friendship and understanding among the next generation of leaders in each country.  With the goal of bridging the gap between East and West, the Program fosters a continuing dialogue among future leaders in a broad variety of professions. It starts this process by bringing some young leaders together from each country for two intensive weeklong conferences over two years, with discussions revolving around historical and current issues in bilateral relations, as well as issues reaching beyond our two countries. Through serious conversation as well as recreation and shared cultural activities it seeks to nurture lifelong friendships. The Program is designed to keep the leaders in touch with each other throughout their careers through a dedicated website and member directory, frequent reunions and newsletters, and online social networks.

All members hold US or Japanese citizenship, enter the Program between the ages of 28-44 and have demonstrated leadership in their respective fields. Membership requires a commitment to participate in two consecutive summer conferences as a Delegate (one in Japan, and one in the USA), and the intent to remain active in the Program as a Fellow (alumnus).

IMéRA Fellowships 2024-5 (France)

Call for applications: IMéRA Core Fellowships 2024-5, IMéRA Institute for Advanced Study at Aix-Marseille University, France. Deadline: 16 October 2023.

For the year 2024-25, Iméra, the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) of Aix-Marseille University, is opening 14 resident fellowships ranging between 5 and 10 months, targeting academics and/or artists. The fellowships are distributed over four programs (Arts & Sciences: Indisciplined Knowledge; Interdisciplinary Explorations; Mediterranean; Necessary Utopias).

Prerequisites common to all available fellowships and that must be taken into account before the eligibility criteria specific to each fellowship include:

  • An active knowledge of French and/or English (written and spoken) is essential.

  • Candidates commit to participate in the activities planned with the other fellows and the scientific team of Iméra.

Wilson Center Fellowships 2024-5 (USA)

Through an international competition, the Center offers 9-month residential fellowships. The Wilson Center invites scholars, practitioners, journalists and public intellectuals to take part in its flagship international Fellowship Program. Fellows conduct research and write in their areas of interest, while interacting with policymakers in Washington and Wilson Center staff and other scholars in residence. The Center accepts policy-relevant, non-advocacy fellowship proposals that address key challenges confronting the United States and the world.

Central European U IAS Fellowships 2024-5 (Hungary)

The Institute for Advanced Study at CEU (IAS CEU) is pleased to invite applications for its Core Junior and Senior Fellowship programs for the academic year 2024/25. Fellowships are available in all research areas of the social sciences and humanities, broadly defined. Fellowships run for the full 9- month period (October-June), for the 3-month short fall semester (October- December), the 5-month fall semester (October-February) or the 6-month spring semester (January-June).

Each year, IAS CEU selects some twenty fellows for its fellowship programs. Fellows are chosen through a rigorous selection process, which includes stages of pre-selection and peer reviews as well as a final decision made by an independent, interdisciplinary, and international Selection Committee. The Institute is committed to the pursuit of cutting-edge interdisciplinary scholarship and will seek innovative research proposals. Young scholars with demonstrable promise of excellence will be considered; established senior scholars are expected to have solid records of first-rate scholarship. All disciplines within this remit are welcome. A primary criterion for selection is the expectation that each fellow’s stay at the Institute will yield original and significant research results.

Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies Fellowships 2023-4 (Finland)

The Core Fellowship Program is the basis of all Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies (HCAS) activities and the majority of fellows are appointed through it. In 2023, the application period begins on 22 August and closes on 14 September. Open to researchers from the humanities, social sciences, behavioral sciences, theology and law, as well as to researchers in other fields who focus on topics related to the human sciences. These prefixed-term appointments for 6 months to 3 years, for all career levels beyond the doctorate (post-docs, mid-career researchers, and full professors). The usual number of appointments is 8–14 per year, with no fixed career stage or discipline quotas. These are salaried positions with associated benefits (paid family and sick leave, pension benefits and occupational health care), as well as relocation assistance for international fellows. In addition, there is a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Arts.

U Strasbourg IAS Fellowships 2023-4 (France)

The University of Strasbourg Institute for Advanced Study (USIAS) was created in 2012 to fund excellent, original research in all scientific domains and to serve as a place of intellectual innovation. In order to reach this objective, USIAS welcomes excellent researchers from all countries and all disciplinary backgrounds. Each year, the Institute selects around 15 Fellows for a period of between three months to two years.

Fellowships are available to researchers:

  • From outside of Strasbourg, wishing to carry out research in interaction with researchers at the University of Strasbourg and/or to use a specific Strasbourg research facility. Eligible candidates should be at the level of at least assistant professor (tenure track) or equivalent.

  • From Strasbourg wishing to work on particularly original research ideas, seeking to apply their knowledge and skills to new domains outside of their current field of work. Joint projects with an external applicant are particularly encouraged. Eligible candidates should hold a permanent post and be at least at the level of maître de conférences or chargé de recherche (or equivalent).

  • Applications from emeritus professors can be considered. Applicants holding a non-permanent position, e.g. post-doctorate, are not eligible to apply.

  • Joint Fellowships can be submitted, with a maximum of three applicants for any one project.

National Humanities Center: Fellowships for 2024-5 (USA)

Scholars from all parts of the globe are eligible; stipends and travel expenses are provided. The NHC will sponsor eligible international applicants on a J-1 Research Scholar Exchange Visitor visa. Click here for details. Applicants must have a doctorate or equivalent scholarly credentials. Mid-career and senior scholars are encouraged to apply. Emerging scholars with a strong record of peer-reviewed work may also apply. The Center does not support the revision of doctoral dissertations.

In addition to all fields of the humanities, the Center accepts applications from scholars in the natural and social sciences, the arts, the professions, and public life who are engaged in humanistic projects. Thanks to generous support from funders and partners, the Center is able to offer dedicated fellowship support for faculty from HBCUs and scholars of early modern China and its world.

Fulbright/IMéRA Fellowship in Migration Studies 2024-5 (France)

Call for applications: Fulbright/IMéRA Fellowship in Migration Studies 2024-5, IMéRA Institute for Advanced Study at Aix-Marseille University, France. Deadline: 15 September 2023.

Conduct research in any discipline relating to migration studies at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) of Aix-Marseille Université in Marseille, and participate in one or two day-long seminars on campus on the theme of the research project. Iméra is the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) of Aix-Marseille University, the largest Francophone university in the world. Iméra welcomes scholars from around the world who are engaged in cross-disciplinary research projects for short-term stays. They expect applicants to solicit an invitation from an appropriate contact at Aix-Marseille University. Research activities must begin in September 2024 or February 2025.

MIASA: Interdisciplinary Fellows 2024-5 (Ghana)

The Maria Sibylla Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA) is dedicated to research in the Humanities and Social Sciences, with ‘Sustainable Governance’ as its central topic. Their main thematic corridors are conflict and sustainable peace, democracy and environmental transformation. They are also interested in a wide range of intersectional sub-topics, such as landownership, migration and mobility, restitution of cultural objects, African cities, and human rights. MIASA is committed to reduce global asymmetries in knowledge production, to promote female scholarship and to bridge cultural divides.

The institute offers time and space for supporting innovative academic research of top international quality. All MIASA fellowships are residential and mainly focus on onsite reflection, discussion and writing. In addition, MIASA facilitates networking and collaboration amongst leading researchers from Germany, Ghana, other parts of Africa and Europe and elsewhere in the world. The present call is for pre-proposals for Interdisciplinary Fellow Groups (IFGs) for the period from August 15 to December 15, 2024, and from February 1 to May 31, 2025. MIASA hosts two IFGs per year. They are MIASA’s central instrument for fostering original research on ‘Sustainable Governance’ and its connected thematic areas as mentioned above. An IFG brings together a group of four to six fellows, including two co-convenors. One of the two co-convenors is expected to be from the University of Ghana. IFGs are interdisciplinary and international.

KAICIID Fellows Programme 2024 (Portugal)

International Fellows Programme, The International Dialogue Center (KAICIID), Lisbon, Portugal. Deadline: 21 May 2023.

The KAICIID International Fellows Programme is an ongoing capacity and professional development Programme that brings together religious leaders, educators, and interreligious dialogue practitioners from Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, and other religious backgrounds from around the world. The Programme offers training (in-person and online) in dialogue facilitation, intercultural communication and promoting social cohesion to people who advance and integrate their knowledge, skill, and experience within their respective communities. Since 2015, more than 500 individuals from more than 85 countries have participated in the Programme.

In 2024, an International and Latin American Cohorts will be launched. The Latin American cohort will be implemented in partnership with Religions for Peace – Latin America and the Caribbean.

The training modules equip the Fellows with an in-depth understanding of subjects such as Interreligious Dialogue, Conflict Management and Peacebuilding, Gender and IRD, Climate crises and IRD, Combating Hate Speech, and Common citizenship in addition to valuable skills like Project design, Fundraising and Monitoring and Evaluation. As part of their dialogue training, Fellows receive humble funding to implement grassroots interreligious dialogue projects in their own communities. During the training, Fellows also have the opportunity to participate in and organise real-time dialogue sessions, academic lectures, field visits to religious and cultural sites, and thematic conferences.
