Marjorie Boulton Fellowships 2024 (USA)

The Esperantic Studies Foundation (ESF) announces its 2024 competition for research fellowships in all fields of the humanities and social sciences, particularly as they relate to interlinguistics, linguistic justice, intercultural communication, Esperanto, and related phenomena. Interdisciplinary work is welcome, and primary disciplines might include, but are not limited to, linguistics, sociology, history, anthropology, communication, or media studies. Open to candidates worldwide, with a preference for candidates in North America and the global south, the fellowships may be held concurrently with other awards or fellowships and are non-renewable. These fellowships honor the legacy of the late Marjorie Boulton, a prolific author of plays, poems, and prose in Esperanto. ESF, a non-profit organization that works for linguistic justice on a global scale, values inclusion and diversity. ESF does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, language, national origin, disability, religion, age, sexual orientation or gender expression.

Awards of $10,000 USD may be given in each of two categories: Doctoral and Post-doctoral research. See below for eligibility requirements.

Category 1. Doctoral Research for students engaged in or about to begin their doctoral dissertations. Eligibility: Applicants must be admitted to candidacy for a research doctoral degree at an accredited university, in good standing in their programs, and considering or embarked on an original research project that will make a significant contribution to the field.

Category 2. Post-doctoral Research for scholars who have recently completed their dissertations, to support related research and publication. Eligibility: Applicants must be no more than five years beyond receiving the Ph.D and propose an original, significant research project; it can be either an extension of the dissertation or a new program of research.

Manchester Metropolitan U: Language & Social Justice Fellowship (UK)

The Department of Languages, Information and Communication comprises Languages, Linguistics and TESOL in addition to Journalism and Information Communication. The linguistic research academics work closely with colleagues in Sociology, Criminology, Education, and Health and many researchers contribute to advancing knowledge in language and social justice in innovative, impactful and expansive ways. This research explores how different models of social justice intersect with the various imaginings and functions of language within our various societies, examining its role in the creation and maintenance of societal inequality. Working with a range of national and international partners and stakeholders in education, charitable organisations, government, and media, the work seeks to challenge reductionist models of social justice as well as the hierarchy of voice that centres white, middle-class, monolingual and mono-dialectal norms. It explores social justice in a range of domains and in relation to various pressing issues such as racism, climate change, media bias, structural inequalities.

You will be an ambitious academic working in this area and has the beginnings of a track record in an area of Language and Social Justice. This might be an area in which we already work, or a new area which complements and expands on what we do. You will have a clear sense of how your work and the work of others challenges societal inequality. Requirements include doctoral level qualification in a related research area.

 

Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study Fellowships 2025-26 (Sweden)

Barbro Klein Fellowship Programme 2025-26, Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study, Uppsala, Sweden. Deadline: 1 June 2024.

The Barbro Klein Residential Fellowship Programme intends to advance the study of cultural diversity in a global perspective. The fellowship is open to scholars from across disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, with an emphasis on research on cultural and social diversity, cultural heritage and creativity, societal structures and public resistance, and varieties of cultural expressions in local and global perspective.

The programme gives fellows the opportunity to concentrate on their own research interests, free from the teaching and administrative obligations of ordinary university life. Fellows are, however, expected to be active members of the scholarly community of the Collegium and to participate in seminars and other academic events beyond their own fields of specialization.

The fellowship programme encourages, but is not limited to, applications from talented younger scholars in non-Western countries and of underrepresented gender. At the time of application, the candidate must have held a PhD (or equivalent degree) for at least three years. Applicants must have a promising track record of independent achievements beyond the post-doctoral level, including significant publications, and be active in international fora.

Bielefield U Research Group Funding 2024-26 (Germany)

The Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) is Bielefeld University’s Institute for Advanced Study. It offers opportunities—with respect to time, space, and funding—for outstanding interdisciplinary research. ZiF is open to scholars from all disciplines post-PhD, based in Germany and abroad. They can propose a research project to be conducted with a curated group of (preferably) international colleagues.

To support the work of groups on-site in Bielefeld, ZiF allocates financial resources and provides infrastructure as well as organisational support. If their collaborative application is successful, ZiF will host these groups on its campus.

• Duration: one stay at ZiF of a duration between one and three months
• Funding Amount: up to EUR 50,000 to cover the costs for travel and accommodation, workshops
and/or conferences on-site; personnel expenses (buy-outs) cannot be covered, but an allowance
of 1.000 EUR per month will be paid as a compensation for any additional costs
• Timing: a period of up to three years (several stays at ZiF)
• For deadline on 23 April: Projects can start from April 2025
• For deadline on 28 November: Projects can start in October 2025
Visiting Groups can, for example, explore new research topics and partnerships, finalise interdisciplinary publications or conduct small research projects during their stay at ZiF.

• Size: the minimum for each group is three people
• Composition: different disciplines must be involved; international participation is explicitly encouraged
• Groups are expected to be present at ZiF for their collaboration phases. Additional virtual participants may be involved.
• The necessity for interdisciplinary collaboration must stem from the research at hand and be explained in the proposal. The mere involvement of different disciplines does not suffice.
• A gender balance appropriate to the disciplines involved is expected.

Hamburg Institute for Advanced Studies: Fellowships 2024-25 (Germany)

The fellowship program is aimed at outstanding scholars (minimum requirement: doctorate) as well as artists and cultural professionals of all career levels and nationalities. The most important prerequisites for a research fellowship at HIAS are substantial scientific or artistic achievements, intellectual curiosity and an above-average interest in other disciplines. Ideal candidates are individuals who reflect the basic assumptions of their discipline and are open to engage with topics and ways of inquiry beyond the confines of their own discipline. They should also be willing to cooperate with scholars or cultural professionals in Hamburg. Desirably, the applicant enriches both the fellow group and the city of Hamburg as a hub of science and culture with innovative impulses and strengthens their internationality with their own networks.

Since HIAS attaches great importance to equal opportunity, it particularly welcomes applications by early career researchers and emerging artists and cultural professionals as well as by individuals from usually underrepresented regions of the world.

Northwestern U Qatar Global Fellows 2024-25 (Qatar)

This call for applications is intended for researchers wishing to spend all or part of their institutional leave/sabbatical at the Institute for Advanced Study in the Global South at Northwestern University in Qatar (#IAS_NUQ) pursuing a research project of relevance to the histories, cultures, societies, and media of the Global South.

In addition to pursuing their own research projects, #IAS_NUQ Global Fellows are fully engaged in the intellectual life of the Institute. Fellows participate in research groups, receive feedback on their work-in-progress, and take part in #IAS_NUQ events. They are expected to present publicly on their research/creative scholarship and are encouraged to produce one multilingual working paper or creative output with #IAS_NUQ Press during their affiliation with the Institute.

Current research themes are 1) Genealogies and Epistemologies of the Global South; 2) Arab Media, Culture, and Politics; 3) Southern Digitalities; and 4) Critical Security Studies.

The duration of this Global Fellowship is either one month or one academic term. This is a residential fellowship; Global Fellows are therefore expected to work on campus at least four days a week during the period of their fellowship.

Stimson Center: Junior Fellows, South Asia Program 2024 (USA)

The Henry L. Stimson Center’s South Asia Program welcomes applications from highly motivated graduating seniors or individuals who have completed their undergraduate or master’s degree in the past year for its 2024-2025 cohort of Junior Fellows. The one-year, full-time fellowship will provide individuals with a unique opportunity to expand their knowledge of security issues in the subcontinent, engage with the South Asia policy community in Washington and the region, and experience working at a dynamic think tank that provides close interaction with senior staff and researchers.

Junior Fellows will support the Stimson South Asia Program’s efforts to research, analyze, and inform policymakers about the evolving dynamics of deterrence, conflict risks, military modernization, and great-power competition in Southern Asia. Fellows will support research, publications, and programmatic efforts (including South Asian Voices, Strategic Learning, and public events and workshops). They will receive professional development opportunities to engage with leading scholars and practitioners in the field; to represent Stimson at scholarly and policy convenings; to hone technical and analytical skills; and to conduct, present, and publish their own research.

Eisenhower Fellowships 2024 (USA & International)

Eisenhower Fellowships identify, empower and connect innovative leaders through a transformative fellowship experience and lifelong engagement in a global network of dynamic change agents committed to creating a world more peaceful, prosperous and just.

There are 3 different programs:

International Programs: Annually, between 40 and 50 mid-career leaders from all fields around the world are selected as International Eisenhower Fellows to travel to the United States for an intensive four-to-six-week fellowship. EF empowers these trailblazers, typically ages between 32 and 45, to tackle bigger challenges as they better the world and their own societies.

USA Programs: The USA Program sends 10-12 outstanding mid-career American leaders abroad each year for a similar program of meetings with leaders and experts in their respective fields in a relevant region of the world. These ascendant American leaders from all fields travel to one or two nations for four- or five-week programs with both in-person and virtual components. Fellows will develop a project, foster professional relationships and launch dynamic, concrete collaborations with their international counterparts, their cohort and the prestigious EF network of more than 1,600 active Fellows on six continents.

Global Scholars: The Eisenhower Global Scholars Program sends four American university graduates abroad annually for an academic year of postgraduate studies at two prestigious European universities, the University of Oxford, UK, and IE University in Madrid, Spain, leading to a master’s degree and immersion in the EF global network of Fellows.

Center for Khmer Studies: Junior Resident Fellowships (Cambodia)

A six-week program in Cambodia for Cambodian, French, and US students to live and study alongside peers about contemporary Cambodian history and society. The Junior Resident Fellows Program provides students with a once-in-a-lifetime experience, allowing them to live and study alongside peers from different backgrounds and cultures while learning about contemporary Cambodian history and society.

Each summer, the Center for Khmer Studies (CKS) offers five U.S., five Cambodian, and five French undergraduate students and recent graduates the exciting opportunity to participate in a six-week Junior Resident Fellows Program in Cambodia. Fellows are based at the CKS campus in Siem Reap, situated on the historic grounds of Wat Damnak – one of the city’s major Buddhist pagodas – and mere minutes away from the world-renowned Angkor Wat temple complex. Fellows also spend time in Cambodia’s bustling capital city, Phnom Penh.

Intercultural Leadership Institute Fellowships (USA)

“The Intercultural Leadership Institute is a year-long intensive leadership experience for artists, culture bearers and other arts practitioners. ILI is a collaborative program of Alternate ROOTS, First Peoples Fund, National Association of Latino Arts & Cultures (NALAC) , PA’I Foundation, Sipp Culture, First Alaskans Institute, and The International Association of Blacks in Dance. The effort grew out of our direct experiences as leaders of these founding cultural organizations. We often found that many personal and professional leadership programs emphasized dominant cultural norms, modes of learning and social approaches that didn’t match our commitment to cultural equity and change-making in our own communities.

ILI’s “intercultural” approach emphasizes overlapping experiences, shared spaces and mutual accountability – and seeks to challenge dominant social norms while honoring differences of histories, traditions, vocabulary and more. We seek to develop leaders specifically within the arts & culture field to adeptly respond to significant changes that impact society, politics, environment and economy. As a peer cohort, ILI intercultural leaders hone personal and professional skills to affect local, national and global communities – and promote a shift toward greater awareness, resourcing and action in the broader field of arts & culture.”
