International College at Beijing job ad

The University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver) Department of Communication invites applications for a non-tenure-track Instructor position at the International College at Beijing (ICB). The job will commence in September, 2016. Depending on the performance of the individual hired, multi-year renewals are possible.

Located in the Haidian District of Beijing (China’s Silicon Valley), ICB is an international partnership between the China Agricultural University and the University of Colorado Denver that offers complete undergraduate programs in Economics and Communication. All courses are administered and taught by CU Denver faculty in English, and the degree earned is awarded by CU Denver. The ICB program offers a thriving and collegial environment that embodies the best promises of international education, and features classes on diversity, globalization, new media (analysis and production), civic engagement, and more.

The teaching load is 7 courses per academic year. The instructor will be responsible for teaching a range of communication courses including but not limited to New Media Production, Media and Society, Advanced Strategic Communication, Advertising, and Media Writing Skills. This line also includes fulfilling the service role of directing the ICB’s Media Learning Laboratory, a state-of-the-art facility serving the ICB program, where students are taught how to analyze and produce a wide range of media. In this capacity, the successful candidate will need to:
1) be familiar with basic studio lighting set-ups and the operation of a variety of professional-grade video cameras;
2) be conversant with the Adobe Photoshop Suite, Apple’s Final Cut X, and other graphic software design platforms; and 3) be an experienced teacher of these skills and manager of such resources.

The salary is competitive and commensurate with peer institutions. Instructors also receive two round-trip airline tickets between Beijing and your home country, international health insurance, and free on-campus housing. Semesters are 14 weeks long; the fall semester begins in mid-September, and the spring semester begins in mid-February. The University of Colorado offers a full benefits package.

Professorship in Cognition, Communication and Culture

The School of Culture and Society, Aarhus University, invites applications for a permanent professorship in the field of cognition, communication and culture. The position, which is a joint appointment, divided between the Faculty of Arts and the Department of Clinical Medicine at the Faculty of Health (50% for each institution), is available from 1 September 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position
The professorship is offered with a view to attracting an established scholar with a strong record of excellence in research and education, as well as documented experience in research leadership and securing research funding. The successful applicant, who is likely to have a background in anthropology or a related humanities or social science discipline, as well as extensive experience and competence in cognitive (neuro-) science, is expected to play a key role in the continued development of the interdisciplinary field of cognition, communication and culture, and to serve as director of the Interacting Minds Centre. The future professor will be based at the Interacting Minds Centre and will contribute to core activities at Aarhus University in general and to the interdisciplinary field of cognition, communication and culture in particular in the following areas: research, education, talent development and knowledge exchange.

Research
We are looking to appoint an applicant with a strong, documented international record of research, teaching and research leadership in the interdisciplinary field of cognition, communication and culture.

Applicants are expected to formulate a vision for the contribution of their research to the field of cognition, communication and culture, and in particular to interdisciplinary research and teaching bridging the humanities and cognitive (neuro-) sciences. The vision must include a description of the applicant’s current national and international collaborations and how these will benefit the existing academic environment at the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Health.

Education
Applicants should be prepared to teach as well as to contribute to developing courses, learning and supervision degree programmes at all levels in cognitive sciences. Applicants must also be able to collaborate on teaching in connection with other degree programmes offered by the School of Culture and Society and the Faculty of Health.

Talent development
The successful applicant is expected to contribute to the recruitment and development of junior researchers and to contribute to the talent development and supervision of PhD students, as well as teaching and developing PhD courses in relevant fields at the Faculty of Health and the Faculty of Arts.

Knowledge exchange
It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange, for instance in research cooperation with private companies, government consultancy, cooperation with stakeholders in civil society or the public dissemination of knowledge. Qualifications

Research environment
The Interacting Minds Centre for the Study of Cognition, Communication and Culture: Specific abilities for interaction are a key to being human. Interactions affect our bodies, our minds, our brains and the world we live in. We are, however, only beginning to understand even the most basic mechanisms. Successful interaction is critical for cooperation, coordination and learning. When this fails, confusion and conflict abound. In many clinical disorders, interactions that otherwise seem automatic may be difficult or outright impossible.

The Interacting Minds Centre (IMC) provides a transdisciplinary platform to study human interaction. It involves researchers from the humanities, social sciences, cognitive sciences, biology and clinical research. This is necessary, because through interactions, humans construct worlds that are at once physical, economic, symbolic and normative. We will therefore study the interplay between three related topics: cognition, communication and culture. Bringing these fields together to bridge topics related to human interaction makes the IMC a unique methodological and theoretical centre of research and inquiry.

The IMC is funded by Aarhus University in 2012-16 as part of the interdisciplinary research initiative. Funding from 2016 onwards is presently under negotiation.

The School of Culture and Society
The Interacting Minds Centre for the Study of Cognition, Communication and Culture is anchored at the School of Culture and Society, which deals with the interaction between culture and society in time and space:

Candidates must have a PhD degree in Applied Linguistics or related discipline. Candidates are expected to have proven academic and team leadership skills. XJTLU is a unique collaborative institution, the first and currently the only university in China to offer both UK (University of Liverpool) and Chinese (Ministry of Education) accredited undergraduate degrees. Lecturer at Centre for English Language Communication, National University of Singapore

Applicants for the position of Lecturer should possess either:
– a Master’s degree or PhD in Applied Linguistics, TESOL or a related field; or
– a Master’s degree or PhD in Rhetoric/Composition, Communication Studies, humanities fields, or the social sciences who can demonstrate evidence of their expertise in teaching academic writing (candidates in this category whose content focuses on the history, rhetoric, or philosophy of science are particularly encouraged to apply)

Applicants should also:
– have a sound record of and strong commitment to teaching, with a minimum of three years of full-time teaching experience at the tertiary level, and
– demonstrate leadership in curriculum planning and materials development.

In addition, evidence of scholarly output in pedagogical research at the higher education level would be advantageous.

Successful applicants are expected to:
– work in teams to develop and/or teach various courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate level(s)
– contribute expertise through involvement in ELT-related projects and activities
– engage in pedagogical research which supports English language teaching and learning at the higher education level
