Danish Council for Independent Research Call for Proposals Autumn 2015 and Spring 2016

The Danish Council for Independent Research (DFF) invites applications for grants towards research activities. DFF wishes to strengthen and develop the internationalisation of Danish research and the Council therefore welcomes applications that involve international activities. The objective is to give the best researchers and research groups the opportunity to coordinate and develop their research collaborations across country borders, and to give talented researchers the opportunity to spend periods abroad as part of their research careers. Consequently, aspects of internationalisation may form an element in applications for all of DFF’s instruments.

CFP RE-DO Conference on Culture’s Role in Sustainable Futures (Aarhus)

RE-DO, a conference on sustainability and culture’s role in sustainable futures takes place from 28-31 October 2015 in Aarhus, Denmark at MOMU (Moesgaard Museum – a splendid new museum in the middle of the woods around Aarhus).

RE-DO is the second of a series of conferences organised by Aarhus University in cooperation with Aarhus 2017 (Aarhus Capital of Culture in 2017). Cradle-to-cradle thinking and circular economies form a substantial part of the region’s “re-think economy” strategy, while renewable energy and fossil-free-zones are part of conference co-organizers´ – Energy Academy (Samsø) – agenda for a sustainable future.

It is within this setting that the RE-DO Conference, organized jointly between Aarhus University and Aarhus 2017 takes an interdisciplinary approach to the challenge of creating sustainable futures. The conference invites academics, practitioners, artists and activists to take part in the dialogue about sustainable cultures.

Theme and background
RE-DO indicates that sustainability has been, is and has to become something we do as part of our everyday practices and living in order to matter. In this sense we view cultural sustainability not just as an add-on to environmental agendas, but as the very precondition for their long-term success.

Sustainability is already put to practice in every-day life, in citizen-based initiatives against food waste, in enterprising initiatives to avoid depopulation of outskirt regions, in integration initiatives targeting minority groups, immigrants and political refugees, and in all sorts of “green” initiatives in which citizens show care for biodiversity and wildlife conservation issues. Moreover, cultural sustainability may also serve as a productive focal point for rethinking policies and practices in traditional public sectors such as healthcare, education, children and elder care.

The form of the conference
The conference aims at facilitating new dialogues between academics and practitioners in which knowledge-sharing, learning and development is at the center. As much as presenting answers and worked-through solutions, the conference aims at asking questions and stimulating discussion and reflection. Therefore the participation is open to a broad category of people, including international guests.

Confirmed keynote speakers
Nick Shepherd, University of Cape Town, South Africa
Nancy Duxbury Carreiro, University of Coimbra, Portugal
Noortje Marres, Goldsmiths, University of London, UK
Joel Outtes, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

Proposal deadline
First, read the call for proposals. Then, papers and panels should be submitted to impact2017@au.dk before June 1. 2015. Authors will be notified of acceptance or non-acceptance before July 1. 2015.

ICA Regional Conference: Responsible Communication and Governance (Denmark)

Deadline to apply: 15 April 2015
The 2015 ICA Regional Conference is organized by the Copenhagen Business School’s (CBS) Department of Intercultural Communication and Management (ICM), in agreement with the International Communication Association, and co-sponsored by different institutions and associations. The theme reflects the communication field’s and the department’s expanding research expertise in areas such as corporate social responsibility, sustainability, governance, and communication.

General theme: Responsible Communication and Governance
The goal of the ICA Regional Conference is to stimulate reflection on and discussion about how responsibility is organized and communicated across a variety of contexts and settings, including social, political, intercultural, corporate, health, and interpersonal communication, amongst other contexts. In particular, the conference focuses on how responsibility emerges in communication, how it shapes and is shaped by social and organizational practices, and how it develops as a social and political ideal at the intersection between governance, talk, and action.

The theme reflects the communication field’s ongoing commitment to examine, critique and shape the shifting roles and responsibilities that we face in regional and global contexts. We welcome extended abstracts for paper and panel submissions that discuss how responsibility is informed and shaped by communication and governance practices either within a particular context or setting (e.g., an organization, the media, a country, a political party) or as it plays out in various processes such as:

  • Meaning and sense making
  • Talk and action
  • Policy making
  • Materiality
  • Transnational movements
  • Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility
  • Internet policies and infrastructures
  • Crowdsourcing and open access to information

CALL FOR PAPERS
SIGCIS Workshop 2012
Information Identities: Historical Perspectives on Technological and Social Change
Sunday October 7, 2012 – Copenhagen, Denmark

DEADLINE for submissions: 15 June 2012

The Society for the History of Technology’s Special Interest Group for Computers, Information and Society (SIGCIS) welcomes submissions for a one-day scholarly workshop to be held on Sunday, October 7, 2012 in Copenhagen, Denmark.  As in previous years, SIGCIS’s annual workshop will be held at the end of the SHOT annual meeting on the day that SHOT has reserved for SIG events.

SIGCIS invites proposals that examine the relationships between computer and information technologies and changes to individual and/or group identities, such as those shared by a nation, company personnel, or members of a virtual community. Such papers might consider:
* Specific ‘information identities,’ a term that we invite scholars to interpret broadly and creatively than has been articulated in the recent or distant past
* Relationships between information technologies and political change
* The rhetoric and discourses of globalization that have been linked to information and computer technologies
* National identity and its relation to information technology
* National and transnational strategies for joining or creating an information society, a network society, an information economy, or related concepts
* Transnational and international organizations, such as IFIP, UNESCO, the European Union, or standard-setting committees.
* Ways in which particular information technologies acquired new meanings and fulfilled new roles through interaction with local practices and identities
* The emergence of new kinds of community and identity around information technologies.

SIGCIS encourages submissions along these and similar lines of inquiry, but it also maintains a proud tradition of welcoming all types of contributions related to the history of computing and information, whether or not there is an explicit connection with the annual theme.  Our membership is international and interdisciplinary, and our members examine the history of information technologies and their place within society.

Proposals for entire sessions and individual presenters are both welcome. We hope to run special sessions featuring dissertations in progress and other works in progress. The workshop is a great opportunity to get helpful feedback on your projects in a relaxed and supportive environment. All proposals will be subject to a peer review process based on abstracts.

All submissions should be made online via the SIGCIS website.  Limited travel assistance for graduate students and other scholars without institutional support is available.  Questions about the 2012 SIGCIS workshop should be addressed to Andrew Russell (College of Arts & Letters, Stevens Institute of Technology), who is serving as chair of the workshop program committee. Email arussell@stevens.edu.

Aarhus PhD scholarship

PhD scholarship in the field of the history of cross-media with focus on the world wide web and its relation to one or more other media types, primarily radio or tv. The Graduate School of Humanities, Aarhus Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University, in collaboration with the State and University Library, invites applications for a 3-year PhD scholarship in the history of cross-media with focus on the world wide web and its relation to one or more other media types, primarily radio or tv starting on 1 September 2011. Candidates who are awarded the scholarship must commence their PhD programme on 1 September 2011.

The PhD scholarship will be financed by the Aarhus Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University, and the State and University Library. The PhD scholarship is advertised within the field of the historical interplay of media. Scholarship about the interplay of media (cross-mediality) is an emerging field within media studies, but especially the number of historical cross-media studies is very limited. With this PhD-project we wish to further historical studies of the interplay of media. Despite the fact that the history of cross-mediality is by and large unchartered, the phenomenon itself has a long history, and with the advent of new media types within the last 10-15 years (eg. internet and mobile media) the media interplay has grown. The project must be historical and it should focus on one or more of the following points: theoretical and methodological issues, institutions, production, content and forms of expression, reception, technology, and social use. The project should benefit from the existing collections of media content at The State and University Library, primarily the national internet archive Netarkivet as well as the collections of radio and television. The State and University Library wants to further research projects which shed light on how research accross the librarie’s media collections can be undertaken.

Description of the graduate school’s PhD programme are at this site.  The PhD scholar will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Graduate School of Humanities, Aarhus Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University, with the aim of completing a PhD degree at the Institute of Information and Media Studies, Aarhus University. The PhD scholar will be affiliated with the PhD programme ICT, Communication, Media Studies and Journalism. The PhD scholar will be employed as a PhD student at the Aarhus Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University. The PhD scholar’s place of work will be the Department of Information and Media Studies, Aarhus University.

For further information, please contact Associate Professor Niels Brügger, Department of Information and Media Studies, phone + 45 8942 9226. Application: You can apply for a PhD scholarship and enrolment in the PhD degree programme via Aarhus University (see guidelines). If you require professional guidance regarding your application for a PhD scholarship please contact the head of the PhD programme ICT, Communication, Media Studies and Journalism. You must attach the marks awarded for your Master’s thesis by the deadline for application, and you must have completed your Master’s degree no later than 31 August 2011.

Deadline for applications: 1 June 2011 at 12 noon. Please include the reference number 2011-218/1-84 on the application.
