Communication in Beijing: A Study Abroad program

China’s global importance continues to grow exponentially.  This is true in terms of economics, but it is also true in other areas, including the environment and culture. As China’s political and cultural capital, Beijing is the best place to experience China’s dizzying transformation and enduring history.  This summer program would provide students a rich, multifaceted experience in China. Since this would not be a language-based experience, the program would be open to students not planning on learning Chinese. We are offering two 3 credit courses: Strategic Communication and Media Campaigns.  These courses are useful for students interested in  environmental campaigns, social media, public relations, advertising, political campaigns, and mass media.  Specifically, these courses would be beneficial to majors in Communication, Business, Political Science, Asian Studies, and Environmental Studies.  Since China is an economic power, Beijing is awash in strategic communication and media campaigns.  By living in Beijing students will be immersed in Beijing’s exciting media environment, which includes Chinese and international public relations/advertising companies and environmental NGOs.  Through our contacts in Beijing, we will arrange for students to learn both on-site and in the classroom from strategic communication professionals and environmental activists. The program will be hosted on the beautiful campus of China’s renowned Beijing University.

We will enhance students’ class experience through cultural outings, including visiting the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, Beijing Opera, the Olympics Bird’s Nest, the ancient Tanzhe Mountain Temple, and the many parks around Beijing.
The program will be led by Dr. Kevin DeLuca and Dr. Ye Sun and is open to undergraduate and graduate students from across the nation  (Cost-$2800).

CAFIC Conference – Call for papers

CALL FOR PAPERS
9th CAFIC International Conference: Intercultural Communication Studies in the Context of Globalization: Theory and Practice

China Association for Intercultural Communication (CAFIC), International Association for Intercultural Communication Studies (IAICS) and Association for Chinese Communication Studies (ACCS) are pleased to announce the forthcoming biennial conference on Intercultural Communication Studies in the Context of Globalization: Theory and Practice. The conference is to be held on June 22-26, 2011 and hosted by the Centre for Intercultural Studies and the College of Foreign Languages, Fujian Normal University (FNU), located in Fuzhou, Fujian, China. High-quality papers for the conference are now invited for submission.

Intercultural communication as an area of study has been around in China since the early 1980s. In a period of thirty years or so since then, we have witnessed remarkable achievements in this field in both theoretical aspects and practical applications. In the context of increasing globalization today, it would be appropriate for the forthcoming conference to focus on ways of linking theory to practice and emphasizing case studies of intercultural communication in various forms.

Paper Submission Requirement: A complete paper in line with Manuscript Submission Guidelines is due by March 1, 2011. Formal invitation letters shall be issued to the authors of accepted papers no later than April 2, 2011.

Working Languages: Papers and speeches are encouraged to be written and delivered in English while those in Chinese are also welcome. All keynote speeches, for their greatest accessibility, should be given in English.

Publication of Accepted Papers: An editorial board will be organized to review all submitted papers and those accepted pieces, with the approval of their authors, will be compiled and published in a volume titled: Intercultural Communication Studies in the Context of Globalization: Theory and Practice–Proceedings of the 9th CAFIC International Conference on Intercultural Communication.

Teaching position in Beijing – Spring 2011

The University of Colorado at Denver (UCD) invites applications for a Communication Instructor position for the spring, 2011, semester at the International College at Beijing (ICB).

Located in the Haidian District of Beijing, ICB is an international partnership between the China Agricultural University and the University of Colorado Denver, with a complete undergraduate program in Economics or Communication. All courses are administered and taught by UCD faculty in English, and the degree earned is awarded by UCD. All students pass a rigorous screening and pay tuition rates normal for the US but extraordinary for China.

The teaching load is 4-5 courses for the semester and will include courses in Interpersonal Communication, Communication and Diversity, Group Communication, and Citizenship and Social Justice.  Pay ranges from $23,000-$28,000 for the semester.  Instructors also receive round-trip airfare, international health insurance, and on-campus housing. The instructor will be expected to arrive in Beijing on February 15, 2011, and the semester runs for 14 weeks.

This is a unique opportunity to work and travel in China, experiencing first hand the world’s most populous nation.

Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree in communication
Experience teaching communication courses
Interest in learning about Asian societies

Desired Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Communication
International teaching experience
Experience with diverse cultures
