On September 26, 2011, I presented a talk entitled “’A Curious Mixture of Passion and Reserve’: Understanding the Etic/Emic Distinction” to Prof. Christine Develotte‘s doctoral seminar at the Institut Français de l’Éducation, which is part of the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon in France. Other faculty who participated in the discussion were Prof.  Jacques Cosnier, and Dr. Nicholas Guichon. The presentation described a manuscript in preparation with Christina Hahn (a recent Master’s student at the University of Duisberg-Essen, Germany) and Prof. Jane Jorgenson (University of South Florida). My thanks to Prof. Develotte for organizing the event and to the students for being a great audience.

On October 13-14, 2011, I was one of the respondents to a panel at Journées d’étude ViSA, presenting a paper entitled “A Metacomunicative perspective on the ViSA group analysis of data.” I am also on the Conseil scientifique of ViSA (Vidéos de situations d’enseignement et d’apprentissage), so in addition to participating in the 2 days of activities, I was part of the group discussing next year’s event and other future plans. My thanks to Andrée Tiberghien for again including me in ViSA. Other researchers who are involved are too numerous to mention as this is a group of several dozen scholars across France, with additional participants from Switzerland and Spain.

On October 17, 2011, I presented “Integrating new technologies into higher education pedagogy in the United States: What problems do they solve? What problems do they create?” as a public lecture at IFE. Prof. Denis Bédard (from the University of Sherbrook, Canada) was the other international speaker. My thanks to Profs. Catherine Loisy and Eric Sanchez for organizing the event, and to the participants for excellent questions.

Paris-UNESCO experts meeting

On September 21-22, 2011 I participated in the UNESCO Experts Meeting on Intercultural Competences at their headquarters in Paris. My thanks to Dr. Katérina Stenou, on this Center’s Advisory Board, for including me.

The goal of the meeting was to respond to a series of regional reports (prepared by Drs. Milena Dragicevic Sesis of Belgrade, Serbia; Alejandro Grimson of Buenos Aires, Argentina; Prue Holmes formerly of New Zealand but now in Durham, UK; Melissa Steyn of Cape Town, South Africa; and Magdi Youssef formerly of Egypt, but now in London, UK) and the synthesis of these prepared by Dr. Darla Deardorff (North Carolina, USA). The other respondents were Drs. Noureddine Affaya (Rabat, Morocco), Eric Cattelain (Bordeaux, France), Yolanda Onghena (Barcelona, Spain), Hanna Schissler (Berlin, German), and Yves Winkin (Lyon, France). On the second day we were joined by a large group of UNESCO Chairs on Interreligious Dialogue for Intercultural Understanding.

We were too busy working to take photographs, but the next day I had time to see the exhibit “Go West!” (a collaboration between artists in Paris and Texas) at UNESCO headquarters.

The Department of English at North Carolina State University is searching for a new faculty member to join its programs in technical communication, professional writing, and digital media. The position is listed at the rank of Assistant Professor but exceptional candidates will be considered for appointment at a higher rank.

Position Description: Duties include teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in technical communication, digital media, professional writing, and/or rhetoric of science and technology (2-2 base teaching load for assistant professors), as well as maintaining an active research and publication program and participating in scholarly and university service. Information about Department and Programs: Technical communication programs at NC State are well established within the Department of English and include courses within an undergraduate concentration in Language, Writing, and Rhetoric, a minor and a master’s degree in Technical Communication, and an interdisciplinary doctoral program in Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media that incorporates technical communication. There is a large service program in technical, business, and scientific writing and a nationally innovative Campus Writing and Speaking Program that works to incorporate writing and speaking experiences within undergraduate instruction across the curriculum. Ohio U fellowship for Chinese students

The Scripps College of Communication at Ohio University seeks students from China to apply for Enlight Foundation Graduate Fellowships beginning in fall 2011 for admission in fall 2012.

The Enlight Foundation will fund multiple fellowships per year that provide master’s or PhD students an annual stipend of at least $12,000. The stipends will be accompanied by tuition waivers provided by Ohio University.

Eligibility criteria are:
*Status as full-time, degree-seeking students enrolled in or accepted for admission to Ohio University’s Scripps College of Communication graduate programs and receiving a grant or scholarship for the full tuition.
*Status as non-residents, non-citizens, or residents/citizens who have resided in the United States for five years or less prior to the first day of school of the year of application.
*Financial need.
*Cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 at prior institutions attended, or a ranking within the top 10 percent of the applicant’s undergraduate class.

The Department seeks a senior colleague whose scholarship, regardless of specialization or methodological orientation, has made a significant contribution to the discipline of Communication. This visiting, one-semester appointment is for the fall 2012. University-sponsored housing will be provided for the duration of the appointment. Ethnog of Comm conference

Ethnography of Communication: The Ways Forward June 10-14, 2012 Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska Proposal Deadline: December 17, 2011 Conference Organizers: Dr. Donal Carbaugh, University of Massachusetts and Dr. Jay Leighter, Creighton University

The summer of 2012 will mark the 50th anniversary of Dell Hymes’ 1962 landmark publication of The Ethnography of Speaking, and the 25th anniversary of Gerry Philipsen’s 1987 influential theoretical work, The Prospect for Cultural Communication. These milestones in the Ethnography of Communication (EC) come at a time when EC scholarship is developing intensively as it is being applied to practical concerns and social problems worldwide.

The Ethnography of Communication: The Ways Forward is a conference designed to bring together scholars in the EC tradition, broadly conceived. The conference takes as its impetus the celebration of several simultaneous milestones in the field of EC but aims to bring EC scholars from around the world together for the purpose of charting ways forward in research, teaching and practice.

Scores of Ph.D.s in communication have contributed EC scholarship and leadership to several areas in the field including but not limited to Environmental Communication, Ethnography, Intergroup Communication, International and Intercultural Communication, Language and Social Interaction, Performance Studies, Religious Communication, and Rhetoric and Public Address. The past several years have seen advances in theoretical and applied work in several settings. In addition, EC scholarship has had a foundational influence in the creation of two international research centers: The University of Washington Center for Local Strategies Research (UWCLSR) and the Center for Sustainable Social Change (CSSC, UMass Amherst). This conference provides an opportunity for intellectual discussion and discovery among beginning and established scholars within this broad tradition. EC scholars are spread worldwide and this event presents a unique forum for bringing them together to discuss theory, methodology and practice in a concentrated way.

We are now taking proposals for papers, panels, and roundtable discussions.
