Macquarie University is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to be attached to Professor Bridget Griffen-Foley’s ARC Future Fellowship project, Switched-On Audiences: Australian Listeners and Viewers.

In this role you will be asked to:
Work on a research project about an aspect of Australian newspaper, magazine, radio or television reception history since 1930;
Play an active role in the Centre for Media History’s activities;
Produce excellent research in line with the research strengths of the Faculty and Department including publishing in peer reviewed journals and applying for research grants;
Engage with external stakeholders, the media and the public to disseminate your research.

Selection Criteria

The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of San Diego announces three openings for the Diversity Postdoctoral Fellowship. We seek to support scholars who are committed to teaching and mentoring students from communities that have historically been underrepresented in higher education, and who show promise of a distinguished research career from any discipline from the Humanities, Sciences, Math and Social Sciences. We are especially invested in supporting the early development of scholars whose research, teaching, mentoring and/or service advances the perspectives of Gender, First Nations/Native Americans, African Americans, and/or Filipino Americans.

The Diversity Fellowship is a two-year program that offers the possibility of a one-year renewal. USD faculty will mentor the fellows’ interdisciplinary engagement with liberal arts pedagogy, and provide institutional and intellectual support for the fellows’ active scholarly research agenda.

Job Requirements
Candidates must have completed their PhD or other terminal degree within three years of the closing date. Candidates who have not yet had a tenure-track faculty position will be given priority. Awards include competitive salary, benefits package, and travel funds for conference participation.

Postdoc in Global Change – U South Florida

University of South Florida Communication Postdoc in Global Change in a Dynamic World, 2014-15

The Department of Communication at the University of South Florida announces its participation in USF’s Postdoctoral Scholars program in the social sciences and humanities, with the theme “Global Change in a Dynamic World.”   Postdoctoral Scholars are expected to (a) contribute to one or more of the priority goals of USF’s strategic plan, (b) work closely with distinguished faculty, (c) participate in  interdisciplinary and programmatic seminar series, (d) teach two courses over a twelve-month period, and (e) continue to build an independent research record and engage in publishing refereed articles and creative scholarship.

Appointments will begin August 11th, 2014, contingent on available funding, and be continued for a maximum of 2 years, contingent upon satisfactory performance. The salary is $40,000 per year. Applicants must have earned a doctoral degree in communication, or an affiliated program, no earlier than 2011 and successfully defended their dissertations by May 1, 2014.  The doctoral degree must be conferred prior to the first day of employment.  (Applicants must receive their doctoral degree from an institution other than USF.)

Predoctoral diversity fellowships Ithaca College

The School of Humanities and Sciences at Ithaca College announces Pre-Doctoral Diversity Fellowships for 2014-15. The fellowships support promising scholars who are committed to diversity in the academy in order to better prepare them for tenure track appointments within liberal arts or comprehensive colleges/universities.

Applications are welcome in the following areas: Communication Studies, History, Sociology, Theater Arts, Writing, Modern Languages and Literatures and the Center for the Study of Culture, Race and Ethnicity. The School of Humanities and Sciences houses additional interdisciplinary minors that may be of interest to candidates: African Diaspora Studies, Latina/o Studies, Jewish Studies, Latin American Studies, Asian American Studies, Muslim Cultures, Native American Studies and Women’s Studies. Fellows who successfully obtain the Ph.D. and show an exemplary record of teaching and scholarship and engagement in academic service throughout their fellowship, may be considered as candidates for tenure-eligible appointments anticipated to begin in the fall of 2015.

Fellowships are for the academic year (August 16, 2014 to May 31, 2015) and are non-renewable. The fellow will receive a $30,000 stipend, $3,000 in travel/professional development support, office space, health benefits and access to Ithaca College and Cornell University libraries. The fellow will teach one course in the fall semester and one course in the spring semester and be invited to speak about her/his dissertation research in relevant classes and at special events at Ithaca College.

Successful candidates will show evidence of superior academic achievement, a high degree of promise for continued achievement as scholars and teachers and a capacity to respond in pedagogically productive ways to the learning needs of students from diverse backgrounds. Candidates should demonstrate sustained personal engagement with communities that are underrepresented in the academy and an ability to bring this asset to learning, teaching and scholarship at the college and university level. Using the diversity of human experience as an educational resource in teaching and scholarship is expected.

Job Qualifications
Enrollment in an accredited program leading to a Ph.D. degree at a U.S. educational institution, evidence of superior academic achievement and commitment to a career in teaching at the college or university level is required. Candidates must also be authorized to work in the United States. Prior to August 16, 2014, the fellow must be advanced to candidacy at his or her home institution with an approved dissertation proposal. Preference will be given to those candidates in the last year of dissertation writing.

Description: Communication is a generative force in the construction of social worlds. In the 21st Century these social worlds are increasingly created within a mediated landscape. These new media include a variety of digital platforms, experienced via a range of devices that offer on-demand access to content, interactive user feedback, creative participation, mobile community formation around specific content issues, and the real-time generation of new unregulated content. The new media, in fact, appear to offer it all and substantial claims have been made about their capacity to contribute to and enhance our contemporary social life.

In this year’s call for Fellows, we seek proposals that take a communication perspective and use the lens of CMM to further our understanding of lives lived in new media and, in particular, address the issue of how new media impacts our capacity to make and engage in social worlds.

Proposals that focus on any of the various types of new media are welcome. These new media can include web-hosted social sites like Facebook, mobile supported technology applications like twitter, or the range of different media hosted sites for citizen engagement and democratic participation activities.

We particularly encourage proposals that can demonstrate the practical import of a communication perspective and that enrich our understanding of the value of using CMM to understand the new media context and the types of social worlds these new media are helping to make and foster.

Carolina postdoc for diversity

The Carolina Postdoctoral Program for Faculty Diversity

As part of a continuing commitment to advance scholars from underrepresented groups in higher education, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Carolina Postdoctoral Program for Faculty Diversity is pleased to announce the availability of postdoctoral research appointments for a period of two years. The purpose of the Program is to develop scholars from underrepresented groups for possible tenure track appointments at the University of North Carolina and other research universities. Postdoctoral scholars will be engaged full-time in research and may elect to teach only one course per fiscal year.

Fields: Applications for study in any discipline represented at the University are welcome.

Stipend: The stipend will be $39,874 per calendar year. Funds are available for research expenses, including travel.

Eligibility: Applicants who will have completed their doctoral degree no later than July 1, 2014 and no earlier than July 1, 2010 are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. This program is funded by the State of North Carolina. The primary criterion for selection is evidence of scholarship potentially competitive for tenure track appointments at the University of North Carolina and other research universities.

The Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (FMSH, Paris) offers postdoctoral fellowships for researchers in the social and human sciences for periods of nine months within the framework of its « Fernand Braudel-IFER » programme (International Fellowships for Experienced Researchers). The Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University invites applications for residential fellowships during the 2014-2015 academic year.
